ADVISOR AREA

Judges Needed - Miscellaneous Project Judging July 18th If any volunteer is interested in serving as a judge or knows someone who would be interested, please contact the Extension Office. We have a large number of Miscellaneous projects this year and are in need of roughly 15-17 judges and registration help. Project areas include: scrapbooking, food/cooking, natural resources, plants, science & technology, photography, leadership/citizenship, and shooting sports. Skill-a-Thon/Project Judging Score Sheets July 18th New for 2015 – In an effort to save on printing costs, 2015 score sheets will not be carbon copied. Therefore, all score sheets must be collected at skill-a-thon. Score sheets will be given back to the clubs in their fair packets. Club Flyers If a club holds an event that is publically marketed (open to anyone outside their club), flyers must be in accordance with OSU policy. This means clubs are to use the OSU Branded Flyer Template. Templates are available online. For assistance with creating the club flyer, contact the Extension Office. Ohio 4-H Alumni & Friends Contest Ohio 4-H has invited all counties to participate in an Alumni/Friends of 4-H Contest. Geauga County 4-H will collect contact information from 4-H Alumni and/or Friends of 4-H. The goal is to discover how they might want to become engaged with the local or state 4-H program. There is no commitment required. The county with the highest number of alumni/friends of 4-H collected per capita of current 4-H club membership will be awarded a $1,000 for their county program. Help us spread the word. Thank you for participating. CLUB NEWS

News from the 4-H Advisory Committee

Thank you to all the clubs who participated in this years’ candy sale. A total of 28 clubs sold 15,000 bars for a combined profit for the clubs of $3750 and a profit to the Advisory committee of $4335. All clubs who turned their money in by the deadline were entered into a random number generator and drawn for the two Kalahari

tickets provided by World’s Finest Chocolates.

Congratulations to Flockmasters 4-H Club, winners of the Kalahari tickets! (Tickets can be picked up at the Extension Office.)

Field to Plate – Educational Field Trip July 17th The Geauga County 4-H Advisory Committee & Geauga Farm Bureau is sponsoring a “Field to Plate” educational field trip on July 17th. The trip will start at the Extension Office and travel by charter bus to various agricultural businesses. This is a FREE educational opportunity open to all 4-H volunteers, 4-H members, and 4-H parents. Attendees should bring their own lunch. Community Ox Roast – Club Community Service Opportunity Our 4th Annual Community Ox Roast Bainbridge is scheduled for Saturday August 8, 2015. The Community Ox Roast is a great way for our many community organizations to showcase what they are all about, as well as bring the community together to share in a great day of fun. The day is geared for all ages. This year the Ox Roast welcomes 4-H Clubs to join in the festivities, which run from 12:30 to 6 p.m. at Centerville Mills Park. Proceeds from the Ox Roast support a Community Ox Roast Scholarship, the Bainbridge Area Food for Friends food pantry, and community programs.

4-H MEMBERS Miscellaneous Project Judging – Saturday, July 18th 12:30pm – 3:00pm School Building Members who have signed up for judging will need to bring their completed project book, pen or pencil, and their presentation materials. Please arrive approximately 10 minutes prior to your judging time.

Skill-a-Thon/Project Judging Score Sheets July 18th New for 2015 – In an effort to save on printing costs, 2015 score sheets will not be carbon copied. Therefore, all score sheets must be collected at skill-a-thon. Members please don’t forget to turn in your score sheets upon completion of project judging. Ribbons will still be awarded. Score sheets will be given back to the clubs in their fair packets. Safety Poster Contest This year’s Safety Poster Contest theme is: Nighttime Safety. Safety Posters are due at the Extension Office by August 14th at 4:30pm. Horse members using the Safety Poster contest as their third event must submit their posters to the Extension Office by August 1st. Please see attached flyer for complete details and poster requirements. 4-H Photography Contest Here’s a chance to show off your photography skills. All pictures must be taken between Fair 2014 and August 1, 2015. Members are not required to take a 4-H Photography Project to enter contest. Entry deadline is August 1st. All entries and winners will be displayed in the Jr. Fair Building during fair. Full contest details are available at www.geauga.osu.edu

LIVESTOCK/HORSE NEWS

Project Judging/Skill-a-thon July 18th Project judging will be held Saturday July 18th for all livestock and horse projects. Species stations will open at 9:00am and last until 11:00am. Members need to bring their completed project book(s) to judging. Members must complete project judging to be eligible for Jr. Fair and to fulfill their 4-H project requirements. If an individual does not complete project judging, that individuals 4-H year will not count despite attending club meetings and other events. Geauga Park District - Horseback Trail Rides Saturday, September 19, Swine Creek Reservation, Middlefield 10 AM-Noon - Walk, Trot & Canter 1-4 PM - Walk Only Bring your own horse for one or both of these naturalist-led trail rides, depending on your pace preference, to enjoy the late summer wildflowers and butterflies from a seat in the saddle! JR. FAIR NEWS & UPDATES

Farm Bureau Fair Internship Opportunity Geauga County Farm Bureau has four (4) internship positions available for the 2015 Fair Season. The intern will assist the Organization Director in developing, maintaining, and executing a successful Farm Bureau booth and delivering Farm Bureau material and agriculture awareness to fairgoers. This is a paid position. Interested individuals should submit a resume and one non-family reference to Ty Kellogg at [email protected] by July 31st. Full position details and qualifications are attached.

Market Animal Assessments The market animal assessments on Saturday, July 18 from 8:00 a.m. until noon at the Junior Fair Office. The assessment is the same as last year: $5.00 per lot through the sale. Checks can be made out to GCAS. Please bring a list of all your market livestock exhibitors and each species they will be taking through the sale. If you have any questions, please contact Jan Jackam at 440-834-1358 or 440-479-4354. T-Shirt Orders All Junior Fair T-Shirt orders must be submitted by July 24th preferably via email to: [email protected] . Forms can be mailed to: Geauga Co. Jr. Fair, PO Box 402, Burton, OH 44021. Tickets will still be $2/each. We accept cash and checks. Milkshake Coupons are a great incentive to get people to the Great Geauga County Fair! Tickets will still be sold at June-July-August Livestock Sales Committee meetings.
