flock to Salvatore Ferragamo – a name synonymous with original design, high quality, and a perfect fit.

In the twenties he’s famous for fitting actors and actresses like Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Pola Negri and Mary Pickford. In the Fifties, the most famous actresses of the time - Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo, Anna Magnani, Paulette Goddard, Lauren Bacall and Sofia Loren - all stopped by Palazzo Spini Feroni, Salvatore Ferragamo’s atelier since 1938, to see the shoemaker.

He met with each personally and satisfied their every whim, even the most extravagant. Still today, movie stars are faithful to his name, only now they no longer need to travel to Florence, but can find Ferragamo’s shoes, clothing and accessories in major cities around the world.

STYLE

ELOQUENTEVENINGSIn the spirit of enhancing a woman’s unique inner beauty, Daniela Karnuts, founder of

Safiyaa, creates expressive, timeless designs that capture the purity of modern couture.

Daniela’s journey into fashion began when she found herself stranded in India after the volcano erupted in Iceland in 2010. She immersed herself in the culture

becoming inspired by the colourful explosion of silk markets, and embarked on designing her own dresses.

With a philosophy based on expressive, noble fabrics, shapely cuts and sophisticated finishings that make clients feel well-dressed, elegant and special, Safiyaa is designed for the strong, confident woman who feels comfortable in her skin; “she’s not a trend follower but more of a classic, elegant woman.”

Daniela approaches the looks with flexibility, flowing with her ideas and mood – it’s the fabrics that take centre-stage, inspiring the direction of her collections. Featuring opulent materials with intricate detailing all her base fabrics are figure hugging with both matt and shine finishes. Imagine the luxurious look and feel of satin and viscous stretch crepes, exquisite laces from

France and Italy, as well as organzas and silks. The pre-collection for Autumn-Winter 14-15 is

very much inspired by laser-cut optics, with intricate metal coated lace and strong prints being key features. Reminiscient of the 1940s and 50s flower stories, the prints have been given a contemporary feel as a pattern on lace.

Heart-shaped necklines and soft, fluid lines are accentuated with patent details in a wide variety of shades. Yellow features strongly along with pine grove, charcoal, red and lots of dark blue and azure.

Believing that it’s a woman that carries the dress and not the dress that wears the woman, Daniela admires Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet for their “unique style and strong presence.”

She has a love affair with the fashion of the 1940s – Balenciaga, Givenchy, Dior and Charles James – collections inspired by classic old couture shapes. In the present day, Daniela looks to Valentino as “a strong brand with luxurious craftsmanship.”

And what of Daniela’s advice for aspiring fashion designers? “Give it a go – listen to your customer and learn how things are made to be able to offer a high quality product. It’s important to work closely with your own atelier and be very hands on.”

“Create your reality as beautiful as you

dare. make a leap of faith, you can’t win if

you don’t try.”

the army look.

What do you wear most often?i usually wear a smart classic style at work, such

as trousers or a skirt in a unique cut that suits my body, with a top to complement the look. it needs to make me feel comfortable with a classic, elegant

touch. Outside of work it’s always my flat shoes after a long working day, and at the weekend, high

heels or a sexy unique pair of boots with chic jeans. it’s essential to choose the right accessories to match the outfit style, whether it’s for a formal

look or smart classic cuts.

What’s in your Spring-Summer wardrobe? mostly i prefer lightweight trousers and shorts

with a sleeveless or a summery top, summer dresses and long skirts with a belt, are also an

option. a printed word, bird or animal face work well. i choose trends that suit the colour of my skin and spirit. Blue is my favourite shade for

the warmer months. Describe your work style?

i always dress up in elegant formal styles, with varying cuts, colours, lengths and fabrics. i

combine certain pieces together, while matching them with my accessories, hairstyle and even my makeup. i love designer brands but always add

my own unique touch to every outfit.

Your style advice? Fashion is what you wear and makes you feel

happy because elegance comes from your self-confidence. If you’re wearing a luxury brand and you don’t feel happy or comfy, believe me people around you will feel it. Be yourself; choose what suits you first mentally and physically, from your skin tone to your body shape – rather than just

blindly following the fashion trends.

The Style Council i love fashion and to share that with the world is something

i truly have a passion for. the Style Council is all about fashion, beauty and style. it’s a blog that encompasses trends and things that i want to shout about. Be it the colour of the

season, a hair trend i’m loving or a product haul.

Summer style - beat the heat! my summer style is casual, fuss free with a lot of light

colours. i personally wear linen shirts and dresses, white denim (cool for summers), lightweight scarves, a cropped denim vest and a bronzing lotion is a must-have!

Most coveted item i love the manolo Blahnik Hangisi satin pumps in emerald green! i’ve wanted these ever since SJP showed off the blue version in Sex and the City.

Your signature style it has to be a topknot bun, over-sized blouse and

skinny jeans; this is my much-adored combination. my current obsession is ‘Shabby Chic’ style, so i

make sure to stack up bracelets.

Designer you admire elie Saab! His attention to detail, designs and

styling is very intricate and the draping of the fabric is exquisite. He is every woman’s dream!

In love with the brand mango, without a doubt! it’s got everything under

one roof and spoils you with choice. The fit is impeccable and the quality is great, all this without

damaging my pocket.

Fashion mantra make sure you wear what suits your body, that’s

my biggest fashion mantra. always be yourself and, dress to express and not impress!

Established in 1905, Rotary Club International was formed to render support, assistance and give hope to downtrodden members of society. Sebahak Isik,

current president of Rotary Club of Salmaniya or RCS (one of the kingdom’s three Rotary Clubs, the other two being Rotary Club of Adliya and Manama, respectively); talks about about some of the footprints the Club has left and continue to leave in the Kingdom’s communities.

With the worldwide Polio Eradication Program, Sebahat is proud to tell us that Bahrain is polio free – and that globally, only a handful of countries report the presence of the disease due to cultural and internal conflict-related issues, making them difficult to penetrate.

Since its inception in 1971, RCS in line with its international directives have identified major areas where members of society require support. These include education, poverty, hunger, disease, eradication of Polio, as well as the provision of

Anchored on the Rotary International’s global campaigns such as eradicating Polio, the Rotary Club of Salmaniya talks to Ohlala!’s Karina Lazarraga about their life-changing initiatives and programs to help the

needy in society.

“There is so much more that needs to be done, and we simply cannot sit idly by

In line with the above, RCS is also working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development and various NGOs and societies, to address child nutrition – specifically targeting problems on obesity, malnutrition and undernutrition.

To concretely deal with these issues – RCS have created what they call their ‘mega project’ for 2013/2014 – the purchase of a mobile clinic worth BD80,000. Fitted with the latest medical equipment, it visits schools to provide medical check-ups and auxiliary services (health education, nutrition advice, etc.) for children.

Working hand-in-hand with the Ministry of

Health, they raised the funds for this project through their Annual Raft Race event, a Family Fun Day that’s been ongoing for thirty-seven years. The event – through the help of numerous donors – has raised BD42,000 for the fiscal year 2012-13 and BD57,000 for 2013-2104 respectively.

“The role as president of the club is fulfilling, but it can’t stop there. There is so much more that needs to be done, and we simply cannot sit idly by and not do our bit to help. This is what drives my involvement with the Rotary here in Bahrain and beyond. All of the members and officers and supporters of our programs make all of this happen,” she shares.

“Since its inception more than three decades ago, the Rotary Club of Salmaniya has brought succour to humanity in general and to Bahrain’s communities in particular, which we are very happy and proud to take part in,” Sebahat beams.

CHIC KHALEEjI

ARTHigh praise goes out to artist Amina Al Abbasi’s

work, which fuses contemporary art with traditional themes. Her distinctive creations are a beautiful

addition to any home. Words by Karina lazarraga

“My mission is to make art wearable and usable

in the most creative ways.”

now sold at Harrods in london and stocked in six different countries, amina’s artworks are in-stantly recognis-

able as classic middle eastern art. But she has done something different. She’s taken that style and re-interpreted it with a con-temporary touch – employing her very own ‘cross technique’ – fusing the old with the new.

Her distinctive artistic style has recently been in the spotlight when one of her paintings was sold by Christie’s for USD25,000 at Noor Dubai Foundation’s Charity Auction – the high-est value her works have been given til date.

Drawing on the Gulf region’s rich cultural heritage, Amina’s passion shines through in her earnest way of talking about her role as an artist: “Having the unique marriage be-tween modern art and the traditional cultural concepts is what people like about my art, I believe. That sense of familiarity and connec-tion is what engages people with my work.”

A self-taught artist, Amina works on her main themes: culture, women and traditional jewellery; as well as other subjects on occasion. “It’s not really planned or intentional, I simply get inspired whilst looking for different ideas. And I am defi-

nitely a believer in happy accidents; I embrace them and do my best to make it look as if it

was meant to be there,” she quips.“My mission is to make art wear-

able and usable in the most creative ways, to make it an essential product, rather than just a pretty piece on your wall, to cater to people from all age groups and allow them to connect with the Bahraini/Khaleeji

culture in the most beautiful ways pos-sible,” Amina explains. In some of her work, themes are enig-

matic, but with a subjectively familiar feel, pointing out that, “Every painting has a story behind it. It resembles something specific, so it is easier for people to identify the painting and relate to it.”

Amina discovered her passion for art from a very early age. Her mother used to give away her paintings as gifts and she recalls: “I loved seeing my paintings in people’s homes. I never thought about taking it to the next level until I showcased my work for the first time at a local art bazaar and they sold out over one week-end.”

It was then she realised that there was something special in her craft. Coming from a family of doctors and engineers – Amina didn’t formally study art but instead obtained a degree in Banking and Finance.

Page 37: Ohlala bahrain june issue 2014

www.ohlala-magazine.com 37OHLALA!

Working in a commercial bank for years, Amina says that her job “did not have one bit of creativity to it. I realised that by giving my business 20 per cent of my time I was able to get better financial returns than working from 7am to 3pm every day,” she states. As her busi-ness evolved, it required more of her time and she started getting various offers to showcase her work abroad.

She took a chance and left her job and that decision has since paid off. Not only an artist but also an entrepreneur, Amina is responsible for designing her own artwork and products which are supplied in six different countries; ensuring her inventory is updated - that all boutiques have stocks available and dealing with different suppliers from five different countries.

Having showcased her art at exhibitions here and abroad, as well as being part of several col-laborations with other artists, Amina’s collective work is an artistic feast – exciting all of the senses. This talent is one to definitely keep an eye on.

WOMEN TALKING

of the rich cultural diversity of the Kingdom and share that learning experience with both expatriates and Bahraini women.

A similar program is Discover Bahrain, an initiative of the Good-word Society of which Dr Hala is the general secretary of. “It’s a one-week programme where people from all over the world are invited to come and stay on the island and they get a 360-degree experience of Bahrain through a well coordinated cultural, social, educational and economic experience,” shares Dr Hala.

Holding various roles in several organisations, Dr Hala is a collabora-tive leader: “I don’t believe in the concept of one player and I truly endorse teamwork as being the key to success. I can say my leadership style is like a coach - I like to mentor and empower teammates to make decisions. I also value everybody’s inputs and promote discussions so it’s a democratic process,” she explains. Being a mother, a leader and a businesswoman running her own company, Dr Hala is proud of the fact that Bahrain promotes and sup-ports women in business.

“Women in Bahrain have come a long way and some of them are even global leaders now,” she points out. “But ultimately, I believe that professionalism and excellence have no gender. They are basic people values and that’s what I live by.

“I also believe that an empowered woman is like a torch. She helps others see the best in themselves. Most importantly she sees the best in herself and lives to her maximum potential.”

Hala thinks of every woman as “a power-house of ideas and creativity.” Her dream is

that “we create environments and opportunities for women not just in Bahrain but also worldwide where they have a platform to showcase themselves and get their voices be heard. It could be through govern-ment policies, NGOs or even as individuals in business.”

In the realm of women empower-ment, Dr Hala is deeply engaged with numerous organisations com-mitted to advancing the development of programs and initiatives for women.

Her commitments include serving as a board member of the Bahrain Businesswoman Society, which provides support for businesswomen through networking, mentoring and fostering communities to aid in build-ing businesses. “For networking we hold various events within Bahrain and outside. I have had the good fortune to travel and develop business relationships in England, India, Morocco, Turkey, UAE, Kuwait, Turkey and Qatar. Bahrain Businesswoman Society has been a great learning curve for me and I encourage women in Bahrain to join us in the endeavour,” she tells us.

Her other involvements include being a key member of the American Women Association, she acts as the chairperson of the ‘On Island Tours’ committee where once a month they take a trip to different places in Bah-rain, or some industrial sites or centres of heritage – to foster the discovery

During the 90s and through the following decade, the Cardigans were one of the biggest bands on the planet. a succession of hits saw them gain global recognition and catapulted lead singer nina Persson into the public eye.

Raised in a small town east of Gothenburg, the daughter of a banker father and a social worker mother the

family struggled for acceptance in their neighbourhood due to their lack of religious belief.

“We were the odd ones out because of it. It was a very religious com-munity and as a family of atheists we were frowned upon.”

Growing up she entertained a musical diet of local folk music and only discovered the pleasures of modern pop when she enrolled in Art College.

“It was like a mini-epiphany. I grew to love bands like The Smiths, Stone Roses and The Sundays. While I was studying I also met Peter (Svensson) and Magnus (Sveningsson) and they convinced me I would be a great focal point for their new band and I quit college and so The Cardigans were born.”

The rest was history…Fast-forward to 2014 and after a few years away from the limelight Nina

returns with the release of her first solo album, Animal Heart.“I’ve really enjoyed making this album. It’s different to being part of a

band but I’m still surrounded by other musicians and it hasn’t been such a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Maybe if I had been alone in a studio it would be a different story…

“I also worked with a great co-writer in Eric D Johnson and of course my husband Nathan. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it. Nathan is a very driven person and he knows exactly how to motivate me when I need to be pushed a little bit. He’s also got a cer-tain courage about him that makes him a little more fearless than me.

“After so many years together we still work really well – both as a couple and as working colleagues.”

But when she’s out on stage it’s going to be all about her…“Absolutely. All the gigs I’ve done to date have really reinforced the

feeling that this is my project.”The creation of Animal Heart was born out of many personal

experiences for Nina but she struggled with illness before it ever came to fruition.

“About five years ago I had a brush with cancer and it led to surgery and it really made me realise what is important in life. I guess I have had things easy up till then and the risk of not being able to have chil-dren did make me sad. It certainly puts your life into perspective.”

Fortunately things turned out ok for Nina and Nathan, as they had a child two years later (Nathan), and being a mother brought a whole new dimension to her existence.

“Being a musician and a mum can be hard and I had to think about whether I would even go on tour after the album was completed. I eventually decided that I would tour but I’ve made a promise that it would never be for more than three weeks at any one time.”

“My first tour did put a little strain on Nathan as he was at home with Nils but they bonded really well and now it’s worked out as a really good arrangement.”

So with everything that has happened, does this make Animal Heart a more personal album for her? “In some respects it does because a lot of what I had to go through is probably somewhere in those songs. Some of it might seem a little similar to my previous work but it does feel nice to represent me rather than the Cardigans. This album is es-sentially all on my shoulders.

“My writing was also influenced by being a mother in the early stages but having come through cancer, been lucky to have a beautiful child and now back to work all my energy is set firmly on the future.”

So does her success with The Cardigans put any pressure on her as a solo artist? “At this stage in my life, with everything that has come before, whatever else I’m lucky enough to experience comes as a bonus to be honest. I know The Cardigans might bring a lot of expectations to the table but I’m a different kind of writer. So in answer to your question I don’t feel much pressure to be honest.”

Originating from Sweden, does she think she will remain in New York? “I relocated to New York and married Nathan who is a song-writer and film composer. It’s a little too early for me to decide where I will settle long term but when I had Nils it did make me nostalgic for Sweden. It’s a good country to live in and excellent for raising kids. To be honest I can’t imagine growing old in New York, so a return to Sweden may be on the cards but probably not for a while.”

“About five years ago I had a brush with cancer and it led to surgery and it really made me realise what is important in life. I guess I have had things easy up till then and the risk of not being able to have children did make me sad. It certainly puts your life into perspective.”

the 600-year old Florentine pharmacy started by Dominican monks in 1221, is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. With its unrivalled heritage and holistic offering, it has catered for the famous and infamous alike, creating a signature scent for none other than Catherine de’Medeci. Their products have since gained a cult following amongst celebrities and mere mortals (like us).

To this day, Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is still steeped in tradition but blends age-old recipes with innovative new product lines. Join Ohlala! on a fascinating journey into the brand’s past, present and future…

a FaBleD HiStoryMany of Santa Maria Novella’s products have become a part of history: the world famous potpourri is still made in large terra cotta vats using local essences and plants as has been the tradition since the 1200s.

Founded in 1221 and opened to the public in 1612, their first ‘Eau de Cologne’ was attributed to the pharmacy’s creation in the 1500s of Catherine de Medeci’s ‘Water of the Queen’, or Acqua della Regina, one of Santa Maria Novella’s Signature Fragrance and the most sought after of all of their scents.

The Company is today run under the direction of Eugenio Alfandery, a gentleman who has kept the tradition and legacy of Santa Maria Novella intact – mixing Old World formulations and expertise with the modern mastery of current technology.

Maserati Ghiblithe Ghibli achieves the impressive task of introducing a more

accessible maserati sedan without compromising on power, style or luxury.

Maserati is an exotic brand, and as such, a purchase of one is not driven by the mind, but by the heart. It is never a ‘sensible’ choice to

buy an exotic Italian brand, simply because they’re luxury goods, and therefore very expensive.

It is therefore of the utmost importance that a Maserati appeals to the senses and the emotions above all else, because it is by winning over these that they will win over customers.

I’ve driven several Maserati models over the years, and each and every one of them has

been stunning it its own way, but each has also been let down by imperfections that a car of its calibre shouldn’t have. For example, a few years ago I drove a Quattroporte, and while I was impressed by its looks, its power and its ride comfort, I was equally unimpressed by a slightly dated looking interior and a very dated infotainment system.

More recently, we drove a drop-dead-gorgeous metallic blue GranTurismo Sport, which was beautiful in every single way except for, once again, the dated infotainment system.

Maseratis of today, however, have addressed all of these issues, and the Ghibli is no

Page 71: Ohlala bahrain june issue 2014

www.ohlala-magazine.com 71OHLALA!

The Ghibli is, without a doubt, the most complete Maserati we’ve had the pleasure to drive so far.

exception. Once again, the infotainment system was the least impressive thing about the Ghibli, but not because it is dated, or poor quality. It is, in fact, extremely good, with intuitive controls, a modern looking interface, and really nice graphics on the satnav.

No, the reason why the infotainment system on the Ghibli is the least impressive thing about it is because the rest of the car is so damn good!

It is beautiful both without and within. From the outside, it manages to accomplish the same delicate balancing act that the Quattroporte does, boasting that classic Maserati styling whilst still looking like a car of this day and age. With smooth, sweeping lines and an aggressive stance, the car exudes an aura of power and speed, and is a pleasure to behold.

Inside, the beauty continues – it is one of the best-looking interiors I’ve ever seen, with smooth, curving lines and plush leather surfaces wherever you look, and not a harsh angle in sight. It screams luxury, and makes

the driver satisfied that it is worth every penny of the many thousands they’ve spent on it!

To drive, it is as sublime as the rest of the Maserati fleet, combining a smooth, refined ride with impressive handling and power on tap to create a car that is truly a joy to drive.

Our particular model was the standard Ghibli, boasting a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 with 330hp and an impressive 500Nm of torque. It’ll propel the Ghibli from standstill to 100km/h in jut 5.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 263km/h.

Figures for the Ghibli S are even more impressive – the same engine is tuned to 410hp/550Nm, and it will hit 100km/h in 5 seconds, and top out at 285km/h.

The Ghibli is, without a doubt, the most complete Maserati I’ve had the pleasure to drive so far, although I haven’t driven any others of the most recent Maserati range. I think that just means I’ve got a lot to look forward to!

The Maserati Ghibli will appeal to the style-conscious woman who appreciates luxurious Italian design and passion for beauty.

in a new feature for Ohlala!, we talk to the true diva drivers of bahrain, with this month featuring Porsche owner Weena clark, who’s

sitting pretty in her scorching cayman r!

So Weena, what do you do? I’m a wife, mother and small business owner. I own a Far-East and South-East Asian café called Darcha in the Nakheel Centre in Saar.

And how long have you been a Porsche owner? In Bahrain since 2005, but back in 1994 I had a Porsche 944 Turbo, which I loved. Now I have the Cayman R.

What do you like about the Cayman R?I love it because it’s fast and sporty, but also small and compact, and very lightweight, which means that you can really cut through the traffic. The acceleration is incredible, just press the gas and go! I also like the fact that it’s mid-engined – when the engine is just behind

you, you can really feel, hear and experience it. I love driving it, I drive it every day.

If you could own any car, what would it be?If I could have any car at all, I think I’d probably go for an Aston Martin. No model in particular, but I love the cars, they’re very sexy. But, to be honest, I’m very happy with my Porsche, I love it!

children aged between six to 11 years old. Excellent stuff, but only scratching the surface of the problem in Bahrain, unfortunately…

Last month, we also attended the launch of the new Infiinti Q50, complete with dancers and a magic show! In an impressive event at the swanky Ritz Carlton’s grand foyer, the new luxury sedan from Infiniti was unveiled, boasting a muscular 325hp 3.7-litre V6, so it’s going to be no slouch! However, as it also has a Predictive Forward Collision Warning

System, which alerts the driver to potential hazards ahead, it’s also doing its bit for road safety.

And finally, a personal favourite of ours, the new all-new MINI Hatch was launched at the Royal Golf Club Riffa Views last month. The new MINI, which now comes with twin turbo three-cylinder AND four-cylinder engines for the first time, has been completely revamped, with a new exterior look, improved driving comfort and a whole new range of luxurious interior materials and colours.

Our favourite feature is the fantastic new connectivity system, which keeps the driver connected through both android and iPhone platforms. Once the MINI Connected App is downloaded, other cool features become available including worldwide radio at the touch of a button and access to Facebook, Twitter and RSS news feeds.

Petrolhead PrettyOur monthly motoring column is brought to you by our new resident

Diva Driver, lisa speed (a pseudonym, of course, she’s very private about her rebellious driving habits…), who’s loving the new infiniti, and not a

fan of those who don’t strap their kids in whilst driving.

it’s something we all dislike here in the office, when you see someone driving down the highway at 140 kilometres-per-hour, with a child standing up between the front seats. We know people are aware of the devastating

results of an accident in that situation, because surely they cannot be THAT unconscious, so why do they do it? Why do they buckle themselves in, but let their children climb loose all over the car? It’s insanity.

We know, without a shadow of a doubt, that all children should be safely buckled up on any car journey, which is why we’re so impressed with Euro Motors, who are doing their part for child safety.

Working with St. Christopher’s School, Euro Motors deployed a team of safety experts to advise parents on the correct car safety restraints for their children in relation to their age, size and weight; according to international standards children need to weigh between 22 and 36kg to qualify for a booster cushion.

They then further demonstrated their commitment to raising awareness among families about road safety by distributing 200 complimentary booster cushions to families with

neW BeginningS…As the luxurious Kempinski Grand & Ixir Hotel signs off – its lack of presence will be felt rippling out across the island. However, for this

integral hotel it’s not goodbye, it’s simply au revoir – until we see each other again…

What are your greatest achievements within Kempinski Bahrain?PS. I’ve been very lucky to have an amazing team who’ve assisted me in many accomplishments. I’m also grateful to the Bahrain community, locals and expats alike, who have embraced our initiatives. When I took over the reins of this hotel, I made a commitment that we will work towards connecting with the local community and I believe we have delivered on our promise. I’m extremely proud of our ‘Grooming Bahraini Hospitality Talent’ project with Tamkeen and TWI, a first of its kind in the kingdom. We were also the first 5-star hotel in the country to start sourcing our products directly from a local farm. When the Ministry announced this should be practiced by all hotels and restaurants, it was a very gratifying moment. What has your role been with the Destination Bahrain forum and is it of benefit? PS. I believe everyone who’s in the hospitality

How does it feel to have reached such a high level within a predominately male industry? MZ. Wonderful! I’m thankful for all the people who trusted me and respected my capabilities. It’s a great feeling of achievement being part of Kempinski Bahrain’s management team, which has made a milestone of luxury standard in the hospitality industry in Bahrain. The biggest challenge has been people management, mainly because the team is composed of multinational members with different backgrounds from various other hotel brands, as well as different industries. What advice would you offer to women wanting to excel in male dominated industries? MZ. Be firm, respectful but straightforward and credible, stand by your words (walk the talk), know your job well, be tough but keep the humility. How does it feel to have led a large team of Bahrainis? MZ. Challenging at the beginning due to different mindset and expectations but I feel proud witnessing their transformation into competitive individuals, ready to face any obstacles and open to change.

sector in Bahrain today believes that not enough is being done to promote Bahrain as a destination of choice in the international arena. I just happened to voice this concern loud enough to be heard, thanks to the media. Although I haven’t been in Bahrain for long, I fell in love with the country and the people immediately. This forum came about when like-minded professionals from different sectors related to tourism came forward to support, creating and developing a tourism strategy for Bahrain. We’ve presented this strategy to Shaikh Khalid bin Hamood Al Khalifa, the acting assistant under-secretary for Tourism Affairs. He was extremely receptive and promised to officially share the mid to long-term strategy for Destination Bahrain, to kick start tourism. How does it feel to have run the largest hotel in Bahrain by room inventory? PS. Challenging and rewarding. My passionate and exceptionally professional team has been instrumental in making our hotel a resounding success, setting a new standard of luxury service in the kingdom. And I hope, in whatever small way, we have contributed towards reinstating confidence on the island – in that Bahrain is back in business! Several people from the local community and businesses have called to tell me that they feel our exit is a loss for Bahrain, I believe we must have done something right over the last three years! What’s next for Kempinski Bahrain? PS. Bahrain is a key destination for Kempinski, and our return is imminent, we’re looking at several potentials but it’s too early to announce anything. I see our exitus purely as an interruption, because I can assure you, we will be back in Bahrain! I have already put my name in for opening the new Kempinski Bahrain, whenever it happens, and so have several members of the management team! What’s the best piece of advice that you have ever been given? PS. Key to success: Take care of your people, and they will take care of your business!

set up. Being part of a talented team and receiving appreciative feedback motivates you to become even better. It’s never an easy step to leave, as you’ve become a family by sharing the passion for hospitality, however, what we have achieved as a team is something we can be very proud of; setting the foundations for this great hotel. It’s a great achievement to be one of the only female FOMs in a 5-star hotel in Bahrain; to what do you attribute your success? CS. My passion for being an hotelier! I’ve lived in the Middle East for more than 10 years, which has allowed me to experience Arabian hospitality and combine that with my passion to engage with guests from diverse cultures. I believe leading my team by example allows me to share my knowledge. I have gained respect in a role, which is male dominated in this region by being straightforward, delivering on my promises and believing in myself. Can you explain your role behind the Teen Concierge concept? CS. The Teen Concierge is a guest-engaging role, which is the most critical part of my department. My contribution started with establishing the role all the way through to selecting the team and providing training. I’ve guided and given feedback on performance - and that was only the beginning. At times it felt like being a mother caring for her children who are just learning to walk on their own – and you worry! How has the concept been of benefit to Bahrain and Kempinski? CS. It is manifold: we’ve introduced hospitality to young talented Bahraini students who represent their country and culture in a work environment; providing the possibility of a future career. It’s amazing to see the drive and energy these young people have in operations. Teen Concierges can effectively offer an insider perspective. They are our colleagues of tomorrow and the teenage visitors are our future guests.

aspect is connecting with the community. What do you feel personally has most touched your heart about the projects? SM. Visiting one of the labour camps with Helping Hands delivering essential items to the labourers was a humbling experience. The living conditions are just appalling. Despite earning very meagre salaries and living in squalid lodgings the labourers were still genuinely smiling – something that many well-to-do people have forgotten – even though one would perceive them as having many more reasons to smile. What do you feel is the most endearing quality women can bring to business? SM. Compassion, as we possess strong interpersonal and team building skills such as empathy, flexibility and sociability. I think women, especially in male dominated industries, or in very senior positions, are more determined and resilient by nature, as we are driven by challenges. Generally us women hear, mirror and test the ideas before we make the final decision.

What CSR projects have you undertaken? SM. Donating our edible leftover food to Tony the Dogfather’s animal shelter. To date we have donated over 11,000 kg of food. That’s a lot of hungry furry mouths fed! We’ve also collected essential items for Bahrain based labour camps and for the Philippines’ Typhoon Haiyan victims. We’ve organised blood donations, beach cleaning, and cookie decorating events, with the proceeds going to the Palm Association, who do such wonderful work supporting Bahraini families fallen on hard times. We’ve marked World TB Day – Kempinski Hotel’s global initiative – every year. We’ve participated in the Earth Hour and this year actually decided to take it even further by observing the Earth Hour monthly. Many people remember our Spice Art exhibitions and charity auction. Recently we supported the SNSE special needs cooking contest at Bahrain City Centre. We still have a couple of activities up our sleeve before Kempinski exits. What benefit have these brought to the community? SM. We hope they have shown that Kempinski is a caring company; we’re not only about providing luxury accommodation and memorable experiences to our guests but we’re here also to integrate with the community at large and support various charitable institutions with their commendable work. What’s the secret to hosting a great event?DP. It really depends on the crowd but a few things are essential to ensure that things will work. You need a great band and a good DJ – someone who understands the crowd (what they like, etc.) and build it up from there. When everybody’s having fun, everything else just falls into place What challenges does Ibrida pose for you?DP. Ibrida is a huge place – so, easily you need at least 400 people to fill up the events. And because it’s massive, you have clusters of people – still enjoying – but not in one common mood or vibe. I’m confident though that with our upcoming plans, it’s going be a great place for Bahrain’s party lovers.

What role does staff play in helping you connect with your loyal party-goers?DP. You have to go that extra mile for the guest. Some of your most loyal clients may come to your venue simply because you are the reason and they come and look for you.

What events do you have in the pipeline?DP. We’ve got big names and special events lined up for Ibrida. There’s also our pre-Ramadan clos-ing party – and that’s something everyone should look forward to!

Could you give us a little insight into your back-ground?David Parolin. I ventured into this industry through sheer adventure really. I’m originally from Sao Paolo

and I went to Australia to complete my degree in Mechanical Engineering and to learn English. As a student, I worked as a waiter and really enjoyed it. I went from that to being a barrista, eventu-ally getting a degree in Hotel Management at Le Cordon Bleu in Sydney. From there I went to New Zealand, then to Argentina and back to Brazil. I realised I really like the vibe of the hospitality industry, so I stayed in Dubai for four years in charge of opening two new bars at The Address and The Grosvenor hotels respectively. Then it was off to Ireland for a change of scenery and I later went on board with Celebrity Cruises before recently joining Ibrida.

After being used to such big cities, how are you finding Bahrain?DP. Bahrain’s got so much potential. People do know how to party here so I’m excited; I think we could make something special happen here.

What qualities are essential for this industry?DP. You have to be a people person and be prepared to deal with very different personalities as well as changing situations. It’s also important to never bring your problems to work.

“When everybody’s having fun,

everything else just falls into place.”

New to the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa team, this gregarious Brazilian native has set his sights on taking Ibrida to the next level of party-cool. ohlala! chats to general manager David Parolin on his plans for the club and secrets on how to host the perfect party.

HOROSCOPES

Ms GeminiGiovanni reveals your destiny …

CanCerSomething has been awakened in you romantically and now the desires of the past few weeks are welling over and threatening to turn your passion meter into overload! it’s quite an experience and not one you are likely to repeat in the same way again, so do not allow the moment to pass you by. the planets seem to be aligned this month; in fact all the signs point towards the positive. this could develop into quite a long-term, serious relationship if you allow it to, confirming what your heart is already screaming at you to accept.

LeoA few of you have been very naughty this year and june may see you misbehaving even more! the energy of gemini dominates most of this month and it is rubbing off on

Happy Birthday

you and bringing your more mischievous side to the fore. this sees you more inclined to experiment in a bolder fashion. there’s nothing wrong with a little risk-taking, so long as you are careful where and how you take the risks. Calculated ones are manageable. don’t allow the impetuous lion within you to run wild without thought, or the costs could end up being considerable.

Virgoyou will find yourself quickly embroiled in a battle of words between friends and forced to take sides over an issue, which threatens to split a long-term relationship for good. if you are asked to voice your opinion, think carefully about what you say. idle or spontaneous talk will lead to a difficult road ahead. Someone may also take a liking to your partner in a fashion that leaves you feeling insecure and irritable. beware the long-term implications of such infatuation. try to reassure your loved one that your feelings for them are genuine otherwise unsatisfied companions might start to wander.

LiBraif you are feeling lucky then june is the month when you should test that inclination and follow your heart towards any ambition you’ve been considering recently. being one of the more impetuous star signs should make it a whole lot easier. but once you’ve decided upon your course of action be sure and warn a partner or loved one of your intentions. it will save a whole lot of disagreement later on when you will need to be focused without the added burden of conflict within a relationship distracting you from where your mind needs to be. fortune follows the focused mind.

sCorpioif any of you are out celebrating this month, you should be careful not to drink too much or over-eat just for the sake of it! you may end up regretting it for a lot longer then you realise. you are also advised to seriously decline any opportunity to indulge yourself in an impulsive fling because your “catch” might not turn out to be all they seem. if the women amongst you have been feeling broody and perhaps uncomfortable about approaching a partner over the subject of a child, then now might be a good time, especially if your companion is an air sign. the 17th brings a parcel of goodies in the mail, but be careful of the motives behind it.

pisCesif money has been a problem of late then the problem will not completely remove itself this month, although the strain will get easier. A friend or family member may come forward with a proposal or loan that will help you and it may start you on the road to greater financial future. towards the end of the month your thoughts may be directed to memories of the past that leave you pining for better days. work may be stressful and a particular colleague could be aggravating you more than usual, but you should try to ignore them.

ariesSometimes you are your own worst enemy. just as things seem to be at their zenith, whether it’s in a relationship or at work, you start to stir yourself up and look for a reason to worry or bring a situation down. Some high pressure moments in june are not going to help matters much and you could find yourself behaving in a manner that sees you cutting your nose off just to spite your face. take heed, and when the dust settles you may be the only one standing but you will definitely be standing alone. life is about appreciation so don’t walk merrily towards the precipice but learn to appreciate what you have.

taurusrelationships are often like the seasons; changeable and unpredictable. for some taureans, june will be a month when your situation with a partner goes through a positive high, which is just as well since recently things have been pretty hard going. however, from now onwards, you should enjoy a more balanced and healthy cycle that will see you cementing your ties and planning further ahead into the future. generally, a great many of you may even be thinking that with your last rocky patch behind you, perhaps now is the time to take those final steps towards a long-term commitment.

sagittarius Saggitarians desire to have a good time. however, some of you may be taking this to the extreme in june and you could find that things turn against you in a big way – especially if there is more than a whiff of infidelity about your actions. tread carefully in romantic circles since eyes are watching you that could catch you out. you may think you have covered all your tracks but experience tells us that this is very rarely the case and unless you want to become the victim of your own desires, analyse exactly what it is you are doing and whether you can really afford to take the risk!

CapriCornif you have been going through a difficult emotional time lately, then june offers you the chance to finally break free from the chains and reclaim your life once more. it could well be that you need a confidence booster and this may come in the form of an admirer, who has been waiting in the wings for some time and is now ready to make a move. even if you feel unsure about a proposal for dinner or some similar advance, put your uncertainty behind you and take the chance. you won’t regret it. for a few, it could even be the start of a much bigger event.

aquariusjune sees you drawing into yourself and reflecting greatly upon various relationships in your life. you may feel somewhat isolated from a partner’s activities this month and a moment put aside to remind those closest that you need attention will not go unheeded. A row over a missing garment will set your household into turmoil and you should think hard about laying down the law, if you are called upon to be judge and jury. A friend comes seeking advice on a relationship in the last few days of the month and the number seven in connection with the colour blue brings a surprise admirer to your attention.

GEMini At-A-GlAnCEgeminis are extremely independent. they will not be restricted by anyone and often find it difficult to accept rules. they prefer to experience the world on their own and by their designs.Change is important to gemini and so is freedom and because of this they will never allow anyone to dictate to them. geminis make for interesting and often exciting friends and they leave their mark on everyone they meet. however, they can often be seen as unreliable because of their tendency to flitter from one project to the next and disappear for long periods of time because they become easily distracted.generally brimming with energy and vitality, and often very clever with their words, they are intelligent and can adapt to almost any situation and consequently they like to get involved. this can make them appear nosy because they like to make everyone’s business their own!

GEMiniit’s funny how life can sometimes creep up on you and then suddenly bring you down leaving you completely shell-shocked. Something similar to that will happen to you this year but it will only be as the month develops that you realise how much it will affect you. A family member may fall victim to a serious illness this month. you could be called upon for assistance and it may prove to be a traumatic month as far as health issues in general are concerned. this will also be a time for you to undergo some serious self-assessment and place your own contributions to the family as a whole. on a more positive note, there could be an exciting trip away later in the month that will lead to a new romance blossoming and a real chance of something more serious developing further into the year.

THE COLUMN

A s a woman, having a child changes many aspects of our lives.

Hormones, nine months of carrying, body changes, mood changes, life view changes, the list goes on and on, but what about a man, the father of the child?

Do we stop and think of what is going on there… Surely there must be things that are happening both internally and externally with him too.

Peter’s wife Susan is pregnant, the first day he heard she was pregnant was in the doctor’s office. Both shock and happiness ran though him. Unsure of what would happen, what next, what am I supposed to do? Susan looked at him with love in her eyes but thinking about all the horror stories and the pain of childbirth. It would be so easy to be a man.

Is it easier or just simply different and incomparable? For a man too, the first baby changes life and career in so many ways.

Responsibility with a capital R comes dancing around the corner and it soon becomes very evident that there are more types of responsibility to be seen and experienced.

Most new mothers will experience the baby blues with anxiety flushes, OMG, actually the second OMG, the first one could be when you find out your pregnant.

But what about the man, and his journey to fatherhood? It actually begins when the future father is born and experiences his own father. His own father is an example, a mirror for his own journey.

Later in life when that young man accepts the responsibility of becoming a father, he starts his next journey of building a relationship with his own child.

Many things change within the man, his concept of self, his interactions with the outside world, work and the home. Becoming a father changes things on the home front, perhaps sharing tasks, not shared before, becoming more part of a family, a wholesome unit, your own tribe.

The relaxing days of not having a care in the world practically vanish and now future planning, care, concern, wellbeing and protection must be high on the list. The once idealist views of the man change very quickly into realistic ones. The man in essence must become more mature, stronger and more driven.

So let’s stop for just a moment and think of our men and the changes they too undergo while becoming a father…
