What is OHSAS

• OHSAS stands for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. OHSAS 18001 is a consensus standard developed in 1999 by an independent group of national standards bodies and certification bodies (registrars) for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems created to enable organizations to control occupational health and safety risks and to improve performances.


What is OHSAS

• OHSAS 18001 is designed to place a proactive and preventative emphasis on risk control factors by identifying and assessing the likelihood of hazards in the workplace. OHSAS 18001 can be implemented by organizations of all sizes and in any industry.


What is OHSAS• When an organization conforms to

OHSAS 18001, it ensures that all people directly or indirectly involved with the company are exposed to a minimum number of risks. A third party certification ensures that effective steps have been put in place to avoid accidents and unsafe situations.

WHY WAS OHSAS DEVELOPED?

• In response to urgent customer demand for a recognizable occupational health and safety management system standard

• Need for health and safety management system that could be audited and certified


What is Occupational Health & Safety?

Conditions and factors that affect, or could affect the health and safety of employees or other workers (Including temporary workers and contract personnel), visitors, or any other person in the workplace.


Compatibility of OHSAS with ISO 9001& ISO 14001:

• OHSAS 18001 is structured the same way as ISO 14001, the environmental management system standard, and has essentially the same elements. It was specifically developed to be compatible with ISO 9001, the quality management system standard, and ISO 14001 to allow companies to develop and register integrated quality, environmental and occupational safety and health management systems.


Compatibility of OHSAS with ISO 9001& ISO 14001: Many companies find they need to address

health and safety elements as they implement ISO 14001 management systems because of the strong interconnection between environmental and safety and health programs in areas such as emergency planning and risk assessment.

History of OHSAS 1996 - BSI 8800 Guidelines for the OHSMS

by BIS (Non auditable & Non Certifiable) 1999 - OHSAS 18001: 1999 BSI introduced

the first OHSAS standard (Auditable & Certifiable); the specification outlines the prerequisites for any occupational health and safety management system, which aids an institution to control risks to enhance performance.

2007 - Updated to better align with ISO 14001, Health is a focus.


EVOLUTION OF THE OHSAS 18000 SERIES

1992 British Health & Safety Commission publishes management

of health and safety at work

1993 British Health and Safety Executive publishes HS(G)65, successful health and safety management

1996 British standard BS 8800 launched, used as model OHSMS

1999 OHSAS 18001 Specification published based on BS8800

2000 OHSAS 18002 Guidelines published to assist in the implementation of OHSAS 18001

2007 OHSAS 18001:1999 updated to OHSAS 18001:2007

Who recognizes it? It is a challenge to create an effective (and

flexible enough to become universally accepted) tool that covers employees interests efficiently. Although the International Standards Organization (ISO) does not consider OHSAS 18001 an official ISO standard, it is recognized across the globe by several industries, which insist on this certification.

Many employees are being exposed to a number of harmful by-products of modern day industrialization. Hence, health and safety management is on the forefront of all policy-making tools to safeguard workers well-being and security.

Defines the OHSMS and the scope of the OHSMS within the organization

4.2 OH&S PolicyCreation of an OH&S policy

4.3.1 Hazard identification, Risk Assessment and Determining Controls Procedure for the on-going identification of hazards, assessments of risks and determination of the necessary controls.

Procedure for describing how legal information is identified and accessed (Main legislation being Factories Act and MP Factories Rules).

4.3.3 Objectives and ProgramsOutlines the importance of a process to manage OH&S programs with objectives & targets which are consistent with the policy determined in Sec 4.2.

4.5.1 Performance Measurement and MonitoringMeasures data for action and describes the plan to monitor and measure OH&S performance on a regular basis.

Procedure(s) required for scheduled evaluations of compliance. The organization will need to keep records of these periodic evaluations.

4.5.3 Incident Investigation, Non-conformances, Corrective & Preventive ActionProcedures for investigating incidents and acting on health and safety non-conformances. Corrective and Preventive actions must be taken.



• 4.5.4 Control of RecordsRecords necessary to demonstrate conformity to the requirements of the OHSMS must be controlled

4.5.5 Internal AuditProcedure to conduct the audits of the OHSMS at planned intervals to ensure that the system complies with planned arrangements



• 4.6 Management ReviewTop Management must review of the OHSMS at planned intervals to ensure that the system continues to be suitable, adequate and effective.
