Alliance for Visible Diversity in Science (AVDS) focuses on one central mission – to increase visible diversity within the Graduate Studies programs at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) by recruiting, retaining, and most importantly, supporting graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, staff, and faculty members from underrepresented backgrounds.
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) is the voice of dental education. Our mission is to lead institutions and individuals in the dental education community to address contemporary issues influencing education, research and the delivery of oral health care for the overall health and safety of the public. Our members include all 76 U.S. and Canadian dental schools, more than 1,000 allied and advanced dental education programs, 60 corporations and more than 20,000 individuals. Our activities encompass a wide range of research, advocacy, faculty development, meetings and communications.
We, the OHSU branch of the AMWA, are an inclusive organization that promotes community empowerment, career advancement, education, and social justice. We achieve this by providing and developing:

The mission of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is to be a voice for physician-scientist trainees at all levels. The APSA is open to everyone interested in science and medicine.
The American Student Dental Association is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of dental students. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy.
The Anesthesiology Interest Group‘s (AIG) goal is to generate students’ interest in anesthesiology by connecting medical students with faculty members from the OHSU Department of Anesthesiology, sharing news and resources from the American Society of Anesthesiology, and providing students with leadership, shadowing, volunteer and research experiences in anesthesiology.
We are an organization of Asian and Pacific Islander medical students (APA) committed to addressing the unique challenges of APA communities through education, outreach, advocacy, and service.
The mission of the Association of Medical Physics Students is to engage, support, and educate medical physics graduate students and those interested in medical physics by providing research assistance, thesis support, didactic and practical preparation, and the foundation for successful post-graduation endeavors.
The Association of Native American Medical Students (ANAMS) is a student organization representing Native American graduate health professions students throughout the US and Canada. The goals of ANAMS include providing support and a resource network for all Native Americans currently enrolled in various allied health professions schools. ANAMS strives to increase the number of Native American students in medicine and other health professions. Exposure and recognition on a national level throughout the medical community is what we continue to promote.
The Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) – OHSU Chapter is committed to supporting medical students interested in surgery and connecting them with mentors of all levels of training. We strive to engage current and future women surgeons to realize their professional and personal goals. Our goal is to empower women to succeed, and to excel in those aspirations through mentorship, education and a networking community that promotes their contributions and achievements as students, surgeons and leaders.
The Baha’i Association at OHSU aims to create a welcoming and unified community for faculty, employees, residents, and students of all faiths and no faith background. Essential principles of the Baha’i Faith include the oneness of humanity, the harmony of science and religion, the basic oneness of all religions, the equality of men and women, the integration of worship and service, and the elimination of extremes of wealth and poverty, among others. All who have an interest in the Baha’i Faith or creating community at OHSU, irrespective of religious affiliation, are welcome to attend meetings and events. Interfaith prayer sessions are held every Wednesday evening at CHH1.
The mission of BTMOC is to engage students by providing educational opportunities to learn about blood cancer, blood diseases, and disease states that are eligible for treatment via a blood stem cell transplant. Additionally, BTMOC aims to increase awareness of the need for young, committed, racial and ethnically diverse registry members who are willing and able to save a life.
The mission of the Bedside Medicine Interest Group is to promote bedside exam skills to health care professional students. While new technologies have allowed health care professionals to see and hear things we could not before, physical examination skills are still essential in providing good patient care and can help diagnose patients and decrease unnecessary tests. We aim to provide a constructive learning environment for students to practice their physical examination skills on one another.

Delta Sigma Delta Delta Sigma Delta is an organization of dentists and dental students brought together with the common goal of promoting excellence in the dental profession.
We are a group of students interested in Dermatology. The purpose of our group is to gain exposure to the practice of dermatology, both general and subspecialties within its scope, provide opportunities to build a strong resume and work with other like-minded students. This group is open to students of all disciplines.
The Diagnostic Radiology Interest Group is dedicated to meeting the interest and needs of those curious about the field of radiology and to provide a sense of community and support for students, residents and radiology faculty.
EMIGcast was started by OHSU medical students in 2015, 2ho were eager to create a platform to discuss a variety of topics related to emergency medicine. Episodes range from interesting case reports, assessment/management of common chief complaints, applying to EM residency and unique nuances of the emergency medical field. It is a great way to both share information that interests you, be creative, and learn about new topics.
Our goal is to learn about the field of Emergency Medicine by bringing in providers from both within OHSU and from other settings to talk about their experiences. We focus on both career exploration as well as skill and knowledge building in the area of Emergency Medicine. We are run by students in the School of Medicine, but welcome students from all programs to attend our events. Please email us and we can add you to our listserve!
ENT Interest Group This interest group will function to help expose medical students to the field of ENT and its many subspecialties as well as to help students get involved with the department.
To engage with medical students and promote interest is the specialty of primary care. To inspire future leaders by demonstrating the best in Family Medicine.
We are an all student and faculty a cappella group that practices and performs throughout the year. We sing at events around OHSU and hope to begin singing in the Portland community. Our song list is always changing, from Billy Joel ballads to Beyonce’. We’re a fun and relaxed group that sings together for weekend wellness. All levels of singing experience and music reading ability are encouraged to join, and we welcome OHSU members from any affiliated program.
The Gastroenterology Interest Group (GIG) allows medical students at OHSU to gain exposure to the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. We will provide opportunities for students to network with faculty and build clinical skills.

GSO Peer Mentoring
Program
The GSO Peer Mentoring Program’s mission is to promote an inclusive environment by connecting incoming students from underrepresented backgrounds with returning students who share similar backgrounds. The purpose is to create greater community ties for these individuals to provide them with a support structure and improve their experience here. Our program is meant to provide additional support above and beyond what is offered by individual departments for students who may not have peers who share their lived experiences within the department.
The Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) is organized exclusively for partnership and educational purposes. The purpose of the Medical Genetics Student Interest Group is to expose students to clinical medical genetics as a field, discuss current events in genetics, and participate in service learning with people living with genetic disorders.
The Med-Peds Interest Group (MPIG) is committed to bringing awareness to the specialty of Medicine/Pediatrics by introducing students to faculty and areas of student and research unique to the filed.
MHAT supports medical trainees and providers who are working through or having lived with mental illness. Our mission is to break the silence about these chronic conditions and to reduce the stigma that surrounds them, which is especially strong within the medical profession.
The mission of the Mentor Circles of OHSU is to provide peer-to-peer insight into the medical school application process to rural, non-traditional, and under-represented students in Oregon who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. This will be accomplished through quarterly mentor meetings centered around specific topics (extracurricular activities, personal statement, interviewing, etc.) that are chosen by the participants, where panelists will share their firsthand experiences and engage in two-way discussions with pre-medical students.
The Middle Eastern and South Asian Association (MESAA) allows students across all OHSU healthcare programs and ethnic backgrounds to gain exposure to the cultures of the Middle East and South Asia. MESAA is committed to promoting cultural competency and networking as a platform for career development in healthcare. Opportunities to spread awareness of diversity include social, educational, and community service events. Lastly, our goal is to provide mentorship and serve as a pillar of support for our members. With upcoming changes in our political climate, it is now more important than ever for MESAA to exist and educate students and community members about our culture, traditions, and value to the community.
Foster a community of students and health professionals who are interested in learning about healthcare challenges and opportunities unique to service members and veterans.
This interest group will unite students over a love of mountain biking and use its platform to emphasize inclusion in the sport as well as host talks on sports physiology and back country first aid. We will also focus on mountain biking as a venue to foster student wellness by hosting group rides.
Music as Medicine The mission of "Music as Medicine" is two-fold: (1) to share our love of music with OHSU patients and the greater OHSU community, and (2) to promote wellness for medical student-musicians. Members will play music for patients and their families at the hospital, whether individually or in small groups, and attend rehearsals as necessary.

The Oncology Interest Group aims to bring together medical students who are interested in pursuing the field of oncology by facilitating community engagement through volunteer opportunities, providing educational opportunities in oncology beyond the standard curriculum, and providing students with opportunities to explore careers in oncology through faculty panels and other resources.
For medical students who are interested in the field of Ophthalmology and would like to gain experience/understanding through volunteer, lecture and networking events.
To provide the SOD students with a detailed background of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition, the full scope of the specialty will be discussed in detail. Extensive mentoring of those students interested in pursuing a career in OMS is provided by the OHSU OMS faculty and OMS residents. Our mission to recruit interested students and provide a pathway for their success in entering an OMS residency program.
Our club is focused on orofacial pain and airway centered disorders, and the role that dentists can play in their recognition and treatment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), obstructive sleep apnea, bruxism, mouth breathing, snoring, upper airway resistance syndrome, and headaches/migraines. The treatment of these disorders provides relief of pain, directly improves the quality of life for patients, and can even extend life expectancy. At club meetings we will introduce these disorders, review the literature, have case presentations and guest lecturers, explore treatment modalities, introduce the concept of medical billing for dentists, and also provide resources for students on attending graduate programs, residencies, and CE programs. Since treating these disorders often involves interprofessional efforts across multiple medical disciplines, all OHSU students and faculty are welcome to attend club meetings, provide their own perspective, and learn more.
Oregon Student Service Corps aims to empower Oregon’s future healthcare and research professionals to support healthcare systems, healthcare workers, patients, communities, and fellow trainees through interprofesional service-learning projects.
Ortho Interest Group Our events range from residents presenting research, case presentations and guest speakers. The club’s goal is to try and help students with an interest in becoming an Orthodontist to learn what the specialty is, ways to improve your application, and to learn more about the field of Orthodontics! The Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group provides information, workshops and networking opportunities for students interested in exploring a career in orthopaedic surgery. OSIG will offer events throughout the year to improve awareness of the scope of orthopaedic surgery, facilitate relationships between and among interested students and faculty, and provide guidance for those interested in building an application for residency.
The Patient Education Collaborative strives to lower the barriers to patient understanding during medical encounters by 1) increasing awareness of the “essential facets” of clear communication with patients, 2) providing exemplars of effective physician-patient conversations, and 3) increasing opportunities for medical students to practice explaining complex concepts and to receive feedback.
Our goal is to advocate and promote optimal oral health for infants and children, to initiate and promote a better understanding and appreciation of dentistry for children among dental students at the OHSU School of Dentistry. Our ultimate objectives are to: (1) foster a relationship between the dental students and the pediatric community through dental community service events (2) to foster networking and learning between students and faculty, residents, and other pediatric practitioners in the surrounding area.

The Psychiatry Student Interest Group is a student-led group that aims to educate ourselves and our peers on aspects of psychiatric care and to foster community among those interested in pursuing psychiatry. Queer Health Alliance is a student interest group at OHSU for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Pansexual, Intersex, and Allied people. We are affiliated both with AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and GLMA (Gay and Lesbian Medical Association). Queer Health Alliance is open to students from any academic program across OHSU. We believe that OHSU can be a national leader in training providers to deliver the highest quality of care to LGBTQ patients, and we are committed to furthering this vision. The Radiation Oncology Student Interest Group is organized by students and faculty to provide information about the field of radiation medicine. The specific aims of this organization include, providing early and intimate exposure to this rapidly developing field within medicine, providing opportunities for student research, and developing strong mentorship from practicing doctors.
To create an inclusive and positive community that promotes road cycling as a healthy activity for OHSU members of any skill level. Our goal is to host group rides within the Portland area for physical and mental health, education clinics on topics such as bike handling and repair, and other cycling related talks.

The mission of the School of Public Health Student Leadership Council for the OHSU-PSU joint program is to prepare a public health workforce, create new knowledge, address social and environmental determinants of health, and lead in the implementation of new approaches and policies to improve population health.
To promote interest, discussion and collaboration of single-cell analysis techniques within the student body and create a network of researchers interested in or using these techniques. Meetings are designed to be discussion oriented, and are open to students of all levels of experience and backgrounds. Single Cell Analysis encompasses a wide array of techniques, including sc-omics, cytometry, in-situ hybridization and many more, with a shared purpose of understanding single cell heterogeneity.
As OHSU students we stand in solidarity with people and communities impacted by gun violence. As future health professionals, we have a duty to minimize vectors of human illness and injury - including gun violence - and to contextualize these forces within social, economic, and political frameworks. We recognize the ongoing work of activists on this issue and seek to elevate their voices through our advocacy. As twenty-first century health care workers we will address the disproportionate rates of gun violence against communities of color, women-identified people, members of the LGBTQ community, and those with mental illness. We will address state-sanctioned violence against communities of color and the vilification of those with mental illness in the gun control discourse. We must use our privilege and power to elevate the voices of those harmed by gun violence. We must act now.
Our mission is to organize a community of medical students who recognize climate change as an urgent threat to human and environmental health. The club is incredibly unique in that it is the only completely philanthropic student club at OHSU School of Dentistry. Since its commencement, SPAP helped 111 patients complete $28,482 of dental treatment at OHSU. SPAP now acts as both a way for underserved patients at OHSU to complete the care they need in OHSU clinics, as well as a volunteer network platform for students to explore and volunteer with multiple organizations. SPAP not only works to change the way underserved populations interact with the world through oral health but also ignites a commitment from students to better the lives of the underserved through lifelong dedication to service. Mission: 1. To help patients who are low income, have little or no health insurance, and who are serious about their oral health care, get the assistance they need. 2. To empower underserved patients who are recipients of the fund to manage their own health through direct dental health promotion 3. To allow OHSU SPAP members and student clinician applicants to participate directly with philanthropic dentistry 4. To encourage OHSU SPAP members and student clinician applicants to collaborate with community partners during their dental career, and to ignite a lifelong commitment to better the lives of the underserved through lifelong dedication to service.

The Student Professionalism and Ethics Association in Dentistry is a national, student driven association that was established to promote and support students’ lifelong commitment to ethical behavior in order to benefit the patients they serve and to further the dental profession.
The School of Dentistry Student Research Group (SRG) is established to further the aims and objectives of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR), International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and the National Student Research Group (NSRG) by: promoting dental student research, advocating for the advancement of dental research, providing professional development programs, and creating a community for student researchers.
SOS is a way for medical students who have experienced the death of a loved one to interact with other students who have experienced the same. You do not have to be alone. We meet at bi-monthly support dinners, in addition to having people you can trust and contact when life becomes difficult.
Our mission is to introduce students to Point of Care Ultrasound and provide opportunities to practice imaging and become familiar with reading scans. We also aim to connect students with POCUS faculty and offer opportunities for volunteering and teaching skills to other students.
To provide medical students with opportunities to gain exposure to Urology by organizing events that enable students to learn about the field and interact with faculty from OHSU’s Urology department.

The Wilderness Medicine interest group exists to increase medical student knowledge of outdoor medicine while providing events that encourage enjoyment of the local outdoors.
Our mission is to provide information on women’s health and perform outreach to better the health of women in the community. We strive to provide different avenues to pursuing a career in women’s health (i.e. OB/GYN, family medicine, psychiatry focused on women’s mental and sexual health). We plan events to get hands-on experience and invite speakers to raise awareness on issues in women’s health.
