IN-ROADS IN TO SALTFORD Uplands Road leads to Golf Club Lane,
Rodney, Tyning and Grange meet the Main, Manor Road too, as you have guessed,
Also meanders on to the West. Meet the ADMIRALS; and there are loads,
Off Montague, and Claverton Roads, There's Anson, Boyd, Drake and Raleigh too,
And thats to name just only a few -
Beech Road, Chestnut Walk, and into High Street, The Batch, and the Homefields, all very neat, Mead Lane, The Shallows, and onward then,
Over A4, and on to The Glen.
Lansdown and Iford, to Norman Road lead, From here, Chelwood, Stratton and Wedmore feed,
Other locations, I can't name them all, . But I do know they are near SAL TFORD HALL.
Yet one road carries the greatest load, And that, of course , is our own Bath Road.
P.S. If I have omitted where you live, Quite humbly, I say, "Do please forgive"

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Clerk to the Council- Mrs M L M FreemantJe, 489, Bath Rnad, Saltford, Bristol BS31 3BA Tel: 01225 400058
WAR MEMORIAL Work to clean the War Memorial and fix a new plaque on the front to display the names of those who died from both World Wars will be undertaken this month. to be in place for the Remembrance Sunday parade on 8th November. The Parish Council is very grateful to the Lions Club of Keynsham for their grant of £100 towards the cost of this renovation. DOG FOULING Elsewhere in this issue of SCAN are details of the new Act requiring dog owners to clean up after dogs on land to which the public has access. The Parish Council fully supports this Act and B&NES Council's intention to enforce it rigorously and appeals to all residents to help get rid of this problem which affects everyone. PEDESTRIAN LIGIITS Although the equipment is in place, W S Atkins have reported problems in programming the two sets of pedestrian lights near Beech Road/Manor Road junctions with the A4. This should have been sorted out by the time of reading, but if not, the pressure for this will be continued. COUNCILLORS SURGERIES A Parish councillor will be available for discussion with any resident on Saturday 17th October (10 am - 11 am) in the Parish Council Office, through Davies and Way estate agents. These surgeries will be held every three months in future . PLANNING MATTERS A note to clear up uncertainty in many residents' minds about the role of the Parish Council when an application is made for planning permission. B&NES Council is the Authority which decides whether a planning application is granted or refused (whether by the planning officers or by Councillors in Committee) The Parish Council is consulted formally by B&NES Council on all planning and listed building applications and must make its comments to B&NES Council at the same time as any comments made in writing by immediate neighbours or any other member of the public or organisation which may wish to make their views known, before a decision is made. Whilst the Parish Council is obviously interested to hear all views, any residents who wish to comment on a planning application must write to B&NES Council direct at Riverside, Temple Street, Keynsham. The Parish Council's own comments will be based on planning issues only and will be looking at the wider impact of any proposed development than perhaps an immediate neighbour. OVERHANGING TREES AND HEDGES Residents are asked to check that these do not cause an obstruction to those using the pavements, especially now the nights are drawing in. Also to avoid hazards underfoot from falling leaves, fruits or berries at this time of year.

Saltford Floral Club Despite the fact that summer this year has passed us by our coffee Morning at member Sheila Reed's home was a very successful event. In fact, the sun did come out for a fitful half hour and we were able to wander out into her attractive garden where the raffle was held at the end of the morning. I think we were all delighted too with the results of our Wine & Cheese Evening when President Audrey Ford invited us to her lovely garden. For once the sun actually shone, the food was excellent, the wine flowed, and we all sat in the garden! All who came voted it a super time, even if one or two of Audrey's quizzes had us wracking our brains for elusive answers.

Yes, there were some clever people with high scores - though not a lot, I may add! - but at least it kept us on our toes and caused much laughter amongst us all. Since my last report in SCAN, we had an excellent afternoon in July with Pam Bluer who instructed us on how to make a German Tuft Design. For nearly all of us, this was something totally different, but we found it was most intriguing to make, and such a fresh and unusual way of using flowers and foliage. Margaret Baker, our South West Area Chairman joined us on Members' Day this year and we were all delighted that after our traditional "English Afternoon Tea" she presented the winners with their cups and trophies. Forthcoming events are: October 27th - Practice Class on Dutch/Flemish Design with Kathleen Taylor - Saltford Hall 2.00pm Tuesday 24th November - Christmas Demonstration with Monica Peirce when she will be demonstrating "Christmas Abroad" There will also be a bumper display of Christmas Goodies on our Sales Table. SaJtford Evening W.I.
The September meeting was chaired by Olive Woodcott as Daphne Clarke was on holiday as usual, the business section was dealt with efficiently and many county events were noted. A walk is planned for October 20th - starting at Bradford on Avon and finishing with lunch at the Crossed Guns Inn. Names were taken for a skittles competition but dates have yet to be arranged. The speaker - Mr Ainsworth - of Eastwood Park Prison gave an interesting insight into the workings of a prison. The tremendous financial cost of keeping prisoners - the difficulties and the aims - to help the prisoners to start a better life afterwards so that they did not re-offend. Whilst nobody wanted to have to meet him in his official capacity, all noticed his compassion for the prisoners in his care and his desire to improve their lot.
Keynsham Light Opera Group One of the time honoured traditions within KLOG is the Chairman's "Thank you" at the end of the last night of the show. At this time, I always make a point of thanking the audience because, without this tremendous local supporrt, we would not be able to stage our shows nor would there be much point in playing to an empty hall. The only drawback is that I am only speaking to the audience on the last night ... so ... can I take this opportunity of saying a very big thank you to all who have supported us in the past and invite you to yet another show this October.

"PALLADIUM NIGHTS" will revive memories of the many great acts and shows that were presented on the television screen every Sunday night for many years ... and what magnificent acts they were! From Florrie Forde, the Crazy Gang and Flanagan and Allan to Gracie Fields and Ethel Merman. George Formby and Judy Garland. Marie Lloyd to Ella Fitzgerald together with a touch of the Tiller Girls and a taste of many of the shows that were produced at the Palladium such as Oliver, Saturday Night Fever, Barnum, The King and I and more!
Come along and, if you used to watch on a Sunday night, you can revive old memories. If you never saw the show, you must come along so that you will know what you missed from those glorious days of Sunday Night at the London Palladium. Keith Richards, Chairman

DOGS (FOULING OF LAND) ACT 1996 Bath & North East Somerset Council has decided to adopt the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996. From September 1st 1998 it will be a criminal offence if dog owners do not clean up after their dog has fouled land to which the public has access; this includes pavements, footpaths, pedestrian areas, parks. open spaces etc. The maximum penealty will be £ 1,000 fine and the Council will also be operating a fixed penalty scheme at a level initially set at £25 There are one or two exemptions - the requirement will not apply to land alongside highways with a speed limIt of more than 40 mph or to agricultural lands, except the footpaths which cross them. Being unaware of the fouling or not having a device or suitable means to remove the faeces is not a defence under the Act. The Head of Environmental and Consumer Services, Howard Nowell, said. "I believe this measure will be welcomed by the public in general and responsible dog owners in particular. The Dog ~rden Service will continue to ha ve a high profile in dealing with anti-social dog owners and will particularly f1lrget those areas with a history of dog fouling. I am confiden~ that with the goodwill of the dog ownIng public complemented by a mix of enforcement and education this measure will bring about a welcome reduction in the nuisance caused by dog fouling" Any member of the public who requires more information on this measure or dog nuisance related issues in general should contact the Dog Warden Service on 01225 396633
