    OIE Mission Statement

    The Office of International Education (OIE) supports theteaching, research and outreach mission of TheUniversity of Texas at Dallas by offeringcomprehensive, assessable, flexibly deliveredcoordination of international education opportunitiesfor faculty and students.

    Eligibility Requirements

    Students must have a minimum GPA of2.0 forgeneral study abroad. UTD works throughthirdparty programs for general study abroad.

    Students must have a minimum GPA of3.0 for

    UTD Exchange Mobility programs. UTD offersexchange mobility at certain universities incertain countries. The process for exchange

    may be lengthy and it is suggested thatstudents apply for exchange mobility at least six(6) months prior to the semester you would liketo do exchange.

    Upper division (junior/senior)transfer students must have completea minimum 15 UTD credit hours.

    Freshman students are allowed to

    First check with the UTD Office of International Education (OIE).If you do not find a program from these resources, then youshould conduct an internet search.

    BASIC PREPARATION

    How do I find a program? Once you have found a program, you will apply directly

    to that program. Program fees usually include: foreign

    tuition, housing, cultural activities, etc.

    You may find yourself completing critical UTD

    institutional study abroad protocol (paperwork)

    simultaneously with the study abroad program you areapplying to. Please pay special attention to deadline

    dates, admission dates, etc.

    BASIC PREPARATION

    Who Should I Meet With Before I Go? Study Abroad Advisor Makes sure you are prepared for your experience

    and to go over university study abroad guidelines and application processes.Your main point of contact while you are abroad.

    Academic Advisor

    Will want to go over your degree plan and may be able totell you what type of credit youre likely to receive although usually this isdone by the associate dean and how it will fit into your overall degree plan.

    Financial AidMost study abroad participants utilize some form of financialaid for their experience. The most common aid used for study abroad isstudent loans. UTD offers the International Education Fund Scholarship(IEFS) to students wanting to study abroad.

    **Note: Study abroad programs also have scholarships, but you must applyearly.

    UTD IEFS Applicants: Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for long term semesters

    (fall/spring) & 3 credit hours for summer programs.

    Enrolled in one of the UTD courses involving study abroad(faculty led/customized programs) or enrolled in a study abroadprogram that transfers credit back to UTD

    Degree Seeking, Non Degree Seeking and Undeclared majorsmay apply

    Undergraduate students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher

    Graduate students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher

    Have approval of institutional protocol through OIE

    Submit a complete application (scholarship application,recommendation letters, cost addendum, narrative)

    UTD IEFS Applicants : Undergraduate lower division students applying for IEFS must

    have successfully completed a minimum of 30 semester credit

    hours at UTD (residential hours) for long - term programs. (I.E.study abroad, independent study, exchange mobility, internship,

    and research).

    Undergraduate upper division students (transfer) applying for

    IEFS must have successfully completed a minimum of 15semester credit hours at UTD(residential hours) for long - term

    programs. (I.E. study abroad, independent study, exchange

    mobility, internship, and research.

    UTD IEFS Applicants :

    Freshman students applying for the IEFS must havesuccessfully completed a minimum of 12 semester

    credit hours at UTD (residential hours) for short termprograms at the moment the program takes place. (I.E.faculty led programs/customized programs that implyone or two weeks of foreign travel)

    *Note: This means that freshmen students who have notcompleted 12 UTD credit hours at the start of the program, arenot eligible. Any monies received through IEFS will need to bereimbursed if student does not meet the eligibility requirements.

    If you are receiving financial aid, you may use that aidthe semester you plan on studying abroad. (Types ofaid include grants, loans, etc.)

    Most third party programs offer scholarships as well,you are strongly encouraged to apply.

    **Note: If you are receiving an Academic Excellence

    Scholarship (AES), it can NOT be used for generalstudy abroad, but may be used for UTD exchangemobility programs.

    Five (5) Types of Mobility

    1. Study Abroad Programs (STAB)

    Third party programs designed by specialized institutions of

    international education to transfer credits to UTD.

    2. Exchange Mobility (EXCM)

    Allows students to obtain credits while hosted by one of

    UTDs international counterparts. Students experience the

    richness of a different culture and language in countries suchas Korea, Hong Kong, England, Ireland, Mexico, Scotland,

    Spain, France, Germany and China.

    3. Internships - Internships place students in workassignments abroad related directly to their fields of

    study, under a professors supervision. (*Note:

    Students are required to first visit the Internship Coordinatorin the Career Center to obtain important information about

    internships within your particular department).

    4. Independent Study - Independent study isacademic work chosen or designed by the student

    with approval of the department concerned, under a

    professors supervision.

    Five (5) Types of Mobility

    5. Faculty Led/Customized Programs -

    Customized programs are designed by UTD

    faculty to include international experience in

    regular courses at UTD. The majority of

    these courses take place in the spring and

    summer semesters.*Note: Trip costs are not included. (I.E. Students will pay

    regular UTD tuition for the course and the cost of the

    trip).

    BASIC PREPARATIONWhat else do I need to do?

    Get a passport Log onto www.travel.state.gov/passport for

    more information. In general, you will need (A) two recentpassport photos (B) Proof of US citizenship (birth certificate,certificate of naturalization, consular report of birth abroad,citizenship certificate or a previous US passport) (C) Proof ofIdentity (valid photo ID, like a drivers license) Fees: Check

    website for most updated fees.

    Get a Visa60% of the worlds countries require visas for anylength of stay. If you travel, you may need visas for othercountries. **Note: Some visa applications may require travel to

    consulate in Houston, Texas.

    Get your shots The Center for Disease Control (CDC) offersthe most up-to-date information regarding vaccinations andshots. You should also consult with your doctor.

    BASIC PREPARATIONThings to consider:

    Consider a phone card Do a little research and find out howyou will be communicating with people back home.

    Cell Phone Most students dont leave home without them. Ifusing a cell, please make certain it is a GPS phone or you maynot be able to make calls from abroad.

    Develop a budget Consider the in-country costs before you go(cost of optional excursions, gifts, school supplies, internet

    access, general living costs).

    Learn about your destination Read everything you can aboutyour destination.
