Field highlightsSavoy Energy, LP has proposed an

Ordovician Prairie du Chien wildcat test in sparsely-drilled Beaver Creek Township (T25N-R3W) of Crawford County.

A drilling permit application was re-ceived by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Office of Oil, Gas  & Minerals on Aug. 8 for the State Beaver & Weber 1-9 (SL: NW NE NW, Sec 9), targeted to a total depth of 11,450 feet.

The location of the prospect is a little over four miles southeast of a 1982 deep test drilled by Miller Brothers in Section 5.

The State Beaver Creek 1-5 was declared dry in the deep horizons after encounter-ing the top of the Prairie du Chien at a subsea depth of -8,896 feet and was plugged

back and completed as a small Devonian Richfield Zone oil well, testing at an initial production rate of 3 barrels per day oil.

Mt. Pleasant, Mich.-based Amplify Development LLC has filed its first Michigan oil and gas drilling permit ap-plication as operator of record, proposing the Cary D1-2 (SL: SW SE SW, Sec 2-T11N-R4W, Sumner Twp., Gratiot Co.).

The location of the planned Devonian Dundee test is about three-quarters of a mile northwest of the productive limits of the abandoned Sumner Field’s Traverse Formation oil reservoir, which produced more than a million barrels oil from 35 wells. The prospect’s 40-acre drilling unit is com-prised of the SW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 2.

John Simaz

John Simaz of Big Rapids, Mich. has joined the Energy In Depth (EID) team as a Michigan representative.

Energy In Depth was launched in 2009 by the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) as a research, education and public outreach campaign focused on getting the facts out about the promise and potential of responsibly developing America’s onshore energy resource base.

Simaz comes to EID with a background in education, having retired recently from his job as a building trades instructor with the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District and having taught for 13 years in Benton Harbor, Mich. prior to moving to the Big Rapids area.

Simaz noted during an interview with Michigan Oil & Gas News that while he

h a s n e v e r been directly i n v o l v e d i n the oil and gas industr y that he had gained a working fa-miliarity with the industr y over the years, in large par t d u e t o h i s friendship with veteran Michigan petroleum engineer Jim Peters, a strong and active advocate for

Letter to the editor

Miller Energy Co. CFO Jim Carl to retireDear Friends and Industry Partners:

I want to bring to your attention via this letter that after 33 years of dedicated and extremely faithful service Jim Carl has announced his retirement. His retirement will be effective September 3, 2013. To our good fortune Jim will be available as a “consultant” to assist us through the process of finding a new CFO and handling special projects.

I had always anticipated retiring before Jim or thought we would go out together so had not given much thought to ever needing to find a new CFO. As the old saying goes “everybody is replaceable.” Jim however, may be the exception. And if not the exception certainly the replacement will be very difficult to find. Think of John Wooden . . . . When thinking of finding a replacement for Jim. Who can lace up those shoes?

Words cannot adequately express my gratitude to Jim after these many years of working alongside him. He is the most dedicated, committed and loyal employee. He holds firm to the highest morals and integrity. He defines the essence of trust. But beyond those qualities he has become a very good friend and sincere brother in Christ.

He will be greatly missed. Coming to work each day and not seeing him will be a huge adjustment (however knowing that he lives just up the hill is reassuring). On September 3 Jim may be absent from the office but he and his work will long be appreciated.

Please feel free to deliver your comments, congratulations or condolences to Jim at: [email protected]. (Yes we plan to keep his e-mail alive).

industry and part of the Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation’s (MOGPEF) network of local speaker teams established earlier this year.

“Jim and I grew up together and went to high school together,” Simaz said. “He knew I was interested in the issues the industry faces and he put me in contact with EID.”

Simaz had given himself a running start before officially joining EID in June 2013 by attending public meetings conducted on hydraulic fracturing in several locations.

The sense he came away from those meetings with was that the industry is often judged unfairly by the general public.

Simaz said he has been mentored in his early work with EID by Tom Shepstone out of Pennsylvania and has also worked with Chris Tucker and Steve Everly in EID’s Washington, D.C. office.

He has continued to attend public meet-ings on behalf of the industry and regularly makes blog posts, which may be found on EID’s website, www.energyindepth.org.

MMMMMMWill pursue a master’s degree in geological sciences at Michigan State University

Mason County Eastern High School graduate Zachary Eriksen awarded 2013 academic scholarship by Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation (MOGPEF)

by Matt Hewitt MOGN Associate Editor

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation (MOGPEF) President Jef fer y Cook and MOGPEF Scholarship Committee Chairman Mike Coy earlier this year an-nounced the awarding of academic schol-arship to five graduating Michigan high school seniors who plan to pursue careers in the crude oil and natural gas industry in fall 2013 at a Michigan college or university.

Zachary Eriksen, who recently graduated from Mason County Eastern High School, was awarded the MOGPEF scholarship for his academic achievements, participation in extracurricular activities and his aspiration to study geological sciences.

“I have always been very interested in earth science, so geology seemed like a natural career path for me. Throughout my entire life, everything in the natural world has always flooded me with curiosity. This intricate, natural balance has always filled me with awe and wonder. I am extremely anxious to learn more about the natural process of the earth,” stated Eriksen in a recent interview.

This fall Eriksen will begin his pursuit of an undergraduate degree in geologi-cal sciences at Michigan State University (MSU). He also plans to earn his master’s in geological sciences.

“At Michigan State University I will have the opportunity to partake in under-graduate research, giving me a firsthand account of the geological processes that have shaped our earth for billions of years. An understanding of these complex and exciting concepts will also give me the

Zachary Eriksen

tools to identify and harness our natural resources . . . . My father went to MSU, and over the years I have fallen in love with MSU as well,” said Eriksen.

Eriksen graduated from Mason County Eastern High School with a grade point average of 4.0 on a 4-point scale. He served as one of the school’s five co-valedictorians and excelled in all subject areas. “My fa-vorite subjects were always the sciences. I have always enjoyed learning about the natural world and its organisms. I was also very involved in extracurricular activities, and my favorite was definitely basketball,” he said.

Throughout his high school career, Eriksen played junior varsity and varsity basketball, varsity soccer, varsity golf and participated in National Honor Society, stu-dent council, quiz bowl, varsity club and the Youth Advisory Council of Mason County.

He also completed 19 dual enrollment credit hours at West Shore Community College and was selected by faculty mem-bers to represent Mason County Eastern High School as a Michigan Education Association Academic all-star.

Eriksen spent much of his high school career participating in different volunteer activities including Special Olympics, high-way clean-ups, youth basketball programs, fundraisers for the American Red Cross and the local teen food pantry.

Over the summer, Eriksen is working at a local ice cream café in his hometown. He plans to take a break from work during his first semester in order to acclimate himself to college life.

The Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation was established in 2003 to assist in supporting education projects and programs about the Michigan crude oil and natural gas industry.

The MOGPEF scholarship grant is awarded to high school seniors who have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, and have been accepted for enrollment to a Michigan university or community college.

Qualified applicants for the scholarship must be pursuing a degree in a field of study related to the crude oil and natural gas industry, with the ambition of seeking full-time employment in the industry.

For more information on MOGPEF and how to support its efforts, visit the MOGPEF website at www.mogpef.org.
