MD-2’s small footprint es-

pecially suits it for space-restricted onshore and offshore rigs for high-capacity sepa-

In a South Texas Field trial, a 22-in. hole was being drilled using two conventional

shakers. Due to capacity limitations there was low ROP. To optimize solids control

performance, one MD-2 shaker was provided. It processed drilling fluid at a 658 gpm

rate, or more than twice the two conventional shakers combined. MD-2 also handled

100% of flow throughout the top hole section to maximize flow rate and maintain

required ROP.

Free Tutorial: Fire Suppression Systems“Fire Suppression Systems 101” is a free 10-page tutorial on the

prevention and suppression of fire, emphasizing a new Aerosol

Extinguishing Agent: Aero-K®.

Defining the overall fire suppression goals by application is

most important. This tutorial comprises 17 sections which de-

scribe and/or illustrate the differences between passive and active

fire protection systems. Once the overall fire suppression goals

have been determined, using other filters such as determining the

fire’s hazard classification, plus determining which fire protection

system components are needed — will allow for a balanced fire

protection plan to be implemented, specifically designed for oil

and gas operations/applications.

When using a passive fire protection approach, many things are to be considered such as fire-resistance-rated walls or

floors, firewalls, fireproofing cladding, and enclosures or the provision of circuitry integrity measures to keep electrical

cable operational during an accidental fire. Active fire protection categories include fire suppression, sprinkler systems,

and fire detection.

From the editor . . . June: a sad, tragic month for Oklahoma personally and very

busy, information filled for OG&PE — as you will see in this

edition.

Horrendous tornados ravaged our

neighbors 90 miles south and west

of Tulsa and “touched down” within

my Broken Arrow suburb this month.

Our hearts and our charity continue to

support fellow Oklahomans in Moore,

Shawnee, Carney and nearby “BA.”

We are strong. We know how to help

each other recover in these times of mourning and rebuild-

ing. Thank you to many expressing concern, interest — and

making generous recovery effort contributions. The oil in-

dustry has been exceptionally and tangibly generous in its

contributions. We are grateful and humbled.

Special report

RTUs automate single welloperation — to entire wellpad

Totalflow XRC Remote Terminal Unit automates opera-

tions of a single well, or an entire wellpad.

You can specify it with built-in, field-proven applica-

tions for site automation and optimization of Intermit or

Plunger Lift wells. You can also program PLC software

function blocks to customize system operation.

A selection of Totalflow input-output (TFIO) modules

are available to provide analog, digital, and pulse IO as

well as valve interface functions and communications

Blast From The Past: Bernoulli PrincipleDrives Operation Of Innovative New Oil FilterBy Gary Bilski, Chief Engineer with FRAM Filtration

The greatest accomplishment of Daniel Bernoulli, the Dutch-born physicist

and mathematician who passed away in 1782 at the ripe old age of 82, is that

his work remains incredibly relevant today.

His “Bernoulli’s principle” of fluid dynamics, which he developed in 1738,

and which states that an increase in the flow rate of a fluid occurs simultane-

ously with a decrease in the pressure placed on the fluid, remains a founda-

tional element in the operation of many mechanical or hydraulic systems.

The latest manifestation of Bernoul-

li’s principle can be found in the new

Luber-finer® line of Time Release Tech-

nology (TRT™) Oil Filters.

The innovative TRT filters have been

designed to provide a controlled release

of a specially formulated, highly con-

centrated liquid additive into the oil

supply, which helps offset the level of

acid and oxidation in the oil, especially

that which is found in heavy-duty die-

sel vehicles that have high Exhaust Gas

Recirculation (EGR) settings. This is

important because over time and over

the miles driven by the vehicle the additives—which help control deposits,

component wear and acidity—are steadily depleted.

In the end, the TRT technology helps the oil maintain its quality for longer,

resulting in increased service life and extended oil-change intervals, and a

corresponding decrease in vehicle maintenance and downtime, along with a

reduction in the cost of the oil filters and oil themselves.

The TRT’s method of operation, which employs a patent-pending release

mechanism, is taken directly from Bernoulli’s

principle.

The TRT’s oil additive is located in a container

that is placed inside the actual oil filter. As slight

changes in differential pressure are detected dur-

ing vehicle operation, the filter knows that it’s

time to add the additive, which is introduced to

the oil at a minimal rate of several drops per hour.

The rate of addition of the additive is also very

important to the filter’s operation because it must

be added at the same rate that it is being de-

pleted. Over-additizing can be as harmful to the

oil as running out of additive, which is why it is critical that the additive be

introduced at a steady rate, rather than being added in bulk at the time of an

oil change.

The operation of the TRT oil filter, with a helping hand from Daniel Bernoulli

and his 275-year-old Bernoulli’s principle,, ensures that the formulation of the

oil is at its peak operational level at all times.

A TRT Value Calculator has also been developed to help fleet managers bet-

ter understand current maintenance costs associated with oil changes and

determine their potential fleet savings by effectively using TRT products.

Performed at a well, it is said to be six-times more

effective than traditional methods; two to three-times
