• Challenge / question

• In many places, the oil is pure enough to

transport it immediately after extraction.

• However, several locations extract a mixture

of oil, gas and water (up to 60%).

• And to transport oil containing 60% water!!

• It is therefore important to extract the gas and

water before transportation.

• Our client in Sudan is looking for equipment to

heat a three phase mixture and equipment to

further heat the oil.

• This will allow the mixture to be separated into

oil, gas and water.

• The physical characteristics of the three

phase mixture are largely unknown.

• The oil is definitely of a highly fouling nature

which means that being able to effectively

clean the heat exchangers’ insides must be

vital.

• Our solution

• Over the years, we have gained much experience

with this type of equipment.

• The challenging thermal design that is required for

this equipment has offered us extra opportunities.

• We chose a ground-breaking solution by using

innovative Expanded Metal (EM) baffles in the heat

exchangers.

• They ensure a low pressure drop on the shell side

and have a low fouling rate as blind spots are

missing.

• We also inserted turbulators on the tube side which

allow for a better mixture (more effective heat

exchange) and less internal fouling.
