OIL PALM PLANTING CAUSE GLOBAL
WARMINGAGRO TECHNOLOGY OF OIL PALM
INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION
Oil palm is a tall palm tree (Elaeis guineensis) native to tropical Africa, having nutlike fruits that yield a commercially valuable oil.
Oil palm planting is the grown area of oil palm tree.
Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING
Increase sea water level
Ecosystems damage
Less fresh water will be available.
Extreme climatic changes: Floods, droughts, stormand hurricane
Ice is melting
Increase in global
temperature

Issues in oil palm planting
industry
CAUSES GW?
Oil Palm Plantation Causes Global Warming
Deforestation
When tropical forests are cleared, carbon is released into atmosphere as carbon dioxide (CO2) causing dangerous climate change and leads toward global warming.
Burning of oil palm residue
Carbon from roots and leaves that were burnt will be released to the atmosphere and contribute to climatic change and further global warming.
Oil palm plantations are also major contributor to forest fires and periodic haze.
NOT CAUSES GW?
Oil Palm Planting Do Not Causes Global Warming
From article “Palm oil and reduced global warming”wrote by Tan Sri Dr Yusof Basiron, the CEO of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (2008).
Data indicates that the agricultural land occupied by the world palm oil industry is miniscule (1.56%) compared with the total land allocated to growing grains and oilseeds.
If WENGOs (Western Environmental NGO) claim that global warming is caused by loss of forests due to oil palm cultivation, it would be useful to know that oil palm share of world agricultural land is only 0.22 per cent.
The share of loss of carbon stock (deforestation) caused by oil palm compared with total global agriculture is thus assumed to be 0.22 per cent. Even the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emission of global agriculture of 17 per cent is considered small compared with the burning of fossil fuel, which contributes 57 per cent of GHG emission.
Expansion of oil palm on the basis of its impact on global warming is, therefore, scientifically unjustified as the contribution is only 0.0374 % of global GHG emission.
If the loss of biodiversity is used as an argument to discourage oil palm cultivation, then ample forest is being conserved. The United Nations convention only requires 10 per cent of the country's land area to be kept as forest for conserving biodiversity, and Malaysia has far exceeded this by committing 50 per cent.
SOLUTIONS
Planting developers improve yields and plant on degraded
land
Governments formulate their biofuels policies to avoid
unintended consequences and to ensure that critical
climate goals are met.
Companies in oil palm related businesses act to ensure that
none of their raw material contribute to tropical
deforestation or peat land depletion.
Consumers exert their influence
SOLUTIONS
ZERO BURNING
Zero burning is practiced in clearing the old stand during replanting, i.e. the old palms are pushed over, shredded and left to decompose in situ. There is therefore, no air pollution from burning the old palms and, most importantly, the nutrients in the old crop are recycled into the new.
