Total expenses for a musical like Oklahoma! are around $77,000, which includes royalties, music fees, production costs, facilities maintenance and much more. Ticket sales bring back only about $50,000 in return. Given our season of six shows and the SCT Jr. program, the total deficit our nonprofit organization must recover is $160,000 to $175,000 per year. You can help now with a holiday financial gift of any amount.

The Playbill of Stockton Civic Theatre

2010–2011 Season

W hen Oklahoma! opened at the St. James Theatre in 1943 the audience and the critics were  ecstatic — " a com-

pletely enchanting performance" wrote Wolcott Gibbs of the New Yorker.  It has also been called the "perfect musical". It is clean, funny, pretty and fresh, and it's tunes  and lyrics are among the best in the American theatre. Oklahoma! is based the Lynn Rigg's play "Green Grow the Lilacs," about the settlers in the Oklahoma Indian Territory during the 1890's. In doing research, I found that the original working title was called "Away we Go!" and that Shirley Temple was considered for the role of Laurey and Groucho Marx was considered for the role of Ali Hakim.  The rest is history!  It also marked the first time that ballet was used to further the plot  and develop the characters of the story. This is a wonderful musical for the holiday season with great songs and dances that we all know. We hope you enjoy SCT's production of Oklahoma!

Director’s Notesby Melissa Esau

A Very Special Cover for OKLAHOMA!

W hen Director Melissa Esau and Marketing Director Jim Treganza discussed the graphic design to be used in pub-

licizing Oklahoma! they decided there was no available illustration that adequately expressed their collaborative vision, and began the creation of a new poster for this producton.

Searching the internet, Jim almost accidentally found Christine Strain, a local Studio Artist who graduated from Linden High and in 2010 received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from University of the Pa-cific. Coming from a family of painters, Chris' elegant artistic style was perfect for the creation of this original poster, and the wonder-ful drawing/painting you see on the cover is the result of many hours of tedius work on her part. Thank you, Chris, for sharing your amazing talent with us! Tr

I t’s hard to believe that the Holidays are just around the corner. Time flies and that's why it is really important to live

life to its fullest and remember to tell those near and dear that they are important to us. I wish all of the SCT family the warmest of Holiday Wishes.

With this production we are presenting one of the true classics of Broadway Musical Theatre, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! It was a war-time smash, opening in 1943, and until My Fair Lady opened in 1956, was the longest running musical of all time. That record has now been broken many times, but the original ran for 2,212 performances and won a Pulitzer Prize. Melissa Esau directs this show and has assembled a wonderful cast of SCT favorites, as well as many new faces in the ensemble. I want to welcome these new friends into the fold. The original choreography was by Agnes DeMille, and in our production Jennifer Hastings and James Reed are sharing the choreography responsibility on the many dance numbers. I also want to welcome a new Costume Designer, Christine Chappell, who has an impressive background. She has just recently moved to Stockton but has worked in theaters all across the United States.

We would also like to once again thank German Glass Werks for the wonderful items in our Christmas Raffle. Their generosity is greatly appreciated by all.

Enjoy OKLAHOMA! and have a Joyous Holiday Season!
