Then there was the group that \got lost . To make a long story \short, i t took one school groupfrorn Kelowna about, 13 hours to hikefrom Cape tseale Liglrt irouse backinto the warmth of their comfort-able beds at the Dormitory. Andtiris required help from the III'1StIrCAS, the Coast Guarci boats, andthree land search part ies. Thanksare due to ts.McDermicr & W.Westwoodfor chasing down the last twomissing persons out on t ire KeehaBay t ra i l a t 11 :30 pm.

Perhaps most, memorable thisspring rdas a wonderful experienceone weekend wtrile watching for greywha les w i th a g roup f rom U .B .C .Continuj.ng Education. Upon roundingCatrre Beale on our return to thestation we approached a group ofsevera l f ro l l ick ing whales. Thesesoon d ispersed but as we t ravel ledfurther up the cirannel one whalesuddenly turned directly towardsour boat. I t sounded some 30 metersoff our stern and as the ALTA stoodrol l ing gently in the waves every-one waited breathlessly to seewhere it would appear next.

Suddenly the usually-calm voiceof Siegurd Tveit at the stern helmresounded exc i ted ly , "There she is3"

And we Iooked to wirere lre waspoint, ing, cl irectty below the boat.f siral l never forget the sight oft l iat ent, ire 35-foot-plus whalevisible only a few feet below ourboa t .

Over the next 20 minutes our"fr iendly" whale surfaced se-veralt imes within a few meters of theALTA, and on three incredibleoccasions she "nosed" r ight u5>close enougtr to be touched, by afew lucky people. I have had astrange fantasy for a long t imeabout touching a whale and whilei t i s d i f f i cu l t t o desc r ibe asanfthing other than a hard-rubberywet sur face ( rather l ike a baldt i r e ) , I can say tha t i t was oneof the most specia l occasions ofn ry l i f e .

And on t ir is note of melancholyI woulci l ike to personally extendmy t iranks to everyone in tsanfieldwho has irelped make my stay hereinterest ing and enjoyable.
