Olaudah Equiano (also known as Gustavus Vassa) was born in 1745 in Essaka, Igbo village inthe kingdom of Benin. When he was 11 him and his younger sister were kidnapped by kinsmenfrom their home while their parents were out, and they were forced into domestic slavery. After being traded a few times Equiano was transported across the atlantic ocean along with 244africans to the british colony of virgina.
When Equiano arrived to the british colony he was bought by a lieutenant in the RoyalNavy, Michael Pascal. His new owner renamed him Gustavus Vassa even though Equiano didn'tlike it he was forced to accept it. As a slave he expreanced a very crule life style. Equiano was soscared in his new environment that he thought that the eyes of the portrates on the walls werefollowing him and the clocks on the wall would tell his master all the things that he done.Equiano recieved training as a seasmenship and traveled with his master through the seven year war with france. His job on the ship was to haul gun powder the the gun deck when needed aswell as being pascals servant. Equiano was Pascals favorite servants so much that he sentEquiano off to Britain to Pascals sisters house to learn how to read and attend school. In this timeEquiano converted to christianity and was babtized. in Febuary 1959. After the was that thebritish one Equiano didn't get his share of money nor his freedome that his Pascal promised him.Instead Pascal sold him to Captain James Doran of the Charming Sally at Gravesend and then
sold to Robert King, a Quaker merchant from Philadelphia. King set him up working shiping routsand in stores. and for 40 pounds equiano could by his freedom. king tought him how to read andwrite more fluently and guided him along the path of his religion, and allowed Equiano to engagein profitable trading. Equiano earned his freedom by his late twenties and left the british coloniesas a freedman.
