Old Bar Public School Success by the Sea Newsletter This is the last newsletter for term 2. I’m still coming to grips with the fact that we are al- ready halfway through the year! Infants Athletics Carnival Despite some heavy clouds in the morning, the weather cleared up beautifully for the Infants Athletics Carnival last Friday. The children enjoyed participating in different ac- tivities showing off their great motor skills. Thank you to all the parents and families who came to cheer, encourage and be part of the day. Many thanks to Carlie Smith who stepped in at the fruit station and to the parents who helped pull down the shade shelters in the afternoon and pack away chairs. It is wonderful how we can all team up to give our children some great experiences. Reports Today, you will receive your child’s semester 1 report. Please take the time to read it with your child and discuss the grades and the ac- companying teacher comments. A lot of time, thought and effort has been put into the construction of these reports. Teachers consult collaboratively to determine grade appropriate benchmarks and to plan for future teaching. Please celebrate the positives with your child. Where there is ‘room for im- provement’ discuss how this might happen and what you, as a par- ent, can do to support your child to reach their goals. If you have con- cerns, or just don’t understand an aspect of the report, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher and have that important discussion. I have enjoyed read- ing the comments made by teach- ing staff. The reports are honest, comprehensive and insightful. I hope you get the same impression!

NAIDOC WEEKOn Monday we held a special as-sembly to celebrate NAIDOC week. Our very own Aunty Linda delivered the acknowledgement of country in the local Gathang language and stu-dent, Ryan Harrison, did a fine job of repeating it in English. We had the pleasure of being entertained by a group of boys from Chatham High School who performed some traditional dances. This was their first appearance in front of an au-dience and they did a magnificent job! NAIDOC week actually falls during the school holidays. Keep an eye out for local celebrations and join in if you can. It is a won-derful opportunity to recognise the heritage and culture of our indig-enous people. This year’s theme is ‘We value the vision.’ It makes reference to the Yirrkala Bark Pe-titions from 1963 – 50 years ago! The petitions helped shape the nations acknowledgement of Abo-riginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their land rights. It was – and remains – a testament to the foresight, strength and determina-tion of the Yolngu people from Arn-hem Land. These petitions began the long process of legislative and constitutional reforms for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It’s a fascinating and inspirational story. Google it and read all about it!Shoes?Where have all the BLACK shoes gone? We have noticed that many students are wearing bright col-oured shoes to school. I love colour BUT our uniform policy specifically indicates black shoes to be worn as part of the school uniform. Jog-gers are acceptable for sport and PE sessions but at all other times, black shoes must be worn. Can you please help us to enforce this rule at school? From next term, I’ll be on the look-out for students wearing correct uniform with pride and distributing certificates to ac-knowledge their co-operation.

Out-of-UniformTomorrow, Friday 28th June, we are asking students to come to school ‘out-of-uniform’ and to contribute a gold coin for the privilege. We have chosen to use the colours of the Aboriginal Flag – red, black and yellow – as the theme for the day. The money raised will go to support Molly Arens competing in Brisbane as part of the state football team. Let’s all get into the spirit of the day and help Molly along the way!

Can You Help? There are all manner of ways you can assist your child – and oth-ers- at school. Currently, we are on the look-out for parents who might be able to offer a little of their time first thing in the morning, to help cut up fruit for the K, 1, 2 classes. This can be done before 9am and usually only takes 15-20 minutes. If you are sending fruit to school for ‘Crunch and Sip’ (and THANK YOU to all the parents who do this regu-larly!) please cut the fruit, where practical, into small ‘chunks.’ This saves the classroom teacher time and makes the fruit break easier to manage. It’s such a little thing, but can make a big difference to the smooth running of the impor-tant morning ‘learning’ session.

Sports Fun DayA HUGE thank you to Mrs Sheri-dan and her ‘team’ for the great fun day she organised for the Kinder-garten, year 1 and year 2 students last Friday. It was such a happy time! Children always remember these events long after they fin-ish school. It was indeed a thing ‘memories’ are made of! Well done to all our budding athletes as well. What’s in a game? I found this fascinating! This has become a real issue for us at school. Children ‘play-acting’ vi-olent games in the playground that are directly linked to violence they are seeing in inappropri-ate games. I suggest – no, I insist – all parents check out this link!Among teen and preteen gam-ers, the names of violent video games travel fast. And before you know anything about these games your child wants to play them. How do you make an in-formed decision about what to buy?Find out more: http://www.com-monsensemedia.org/blog/10-most-violent-video-games-and-10-alter-nativesTelling storiesHere’s a great school holiday idea: have your kids create an entry for this year’s Trop Jr film festival and in the process learn a little something about scripting, shoot-ing, editing and copyright law.
