LETTERS FROM OLD BOYS
WgCdr (Retd) Prakash S Sanadi(Class of 1960) Pune
Dear Rev Father Principal & OBA,
It was with deep regret to hear of dear Sir Alec Alvarez, our Chemistry Teacher, passing away. MAY HIS SOUL
Rest in peAce.
He was a very noble soul, dignified in every respect and a very dedicated teacher to his students. We, as his students
of Chemistry in St Joseph’s European High School, held him in the highest esteem not only as a teacher, but
also as a true friend, who apart from Chemistry, also helped us in Physics & Mathematics when ever required.
He always had a smile on his face, which put us at ease when we entered his class room. I remember an incident
when one day we entered his class room and seeing me he asked me “Prakash where are the sweets?” I was quite
confused, which he noticed immediately, so he said “didnt you win a Dalda Tin yesterday in the Radio Ceylon
Contest? We heard MrAmidSayani on the radio declaring you had won the contest and had been awarded a tin of
Dalda.” Thats when I realised he was also a listener of Radio Ceylon. So I told him I am still to get the tin, which
of course I never received!! Such was his relationship with his students. Never a harsh word was uttered by him.
We all looked forward to being in his class more so during practicals when he would guide each of his students
during the experiments.
In 1990. when I retired from the Indian Air Force, on being selected by M/s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and
was posted in Bangalore, I went across to meet him at his residence, where I also met his wife Dorothy who used
to teach in the 1st Std ‘B’ section, I was then in the ‘A’ section under Late Miss Dias. I found both of them in
high spirits that evening and Mr Alvarez immediately placed me when I told him my name. I gave him a bottle of
scotch which was one of his favorite pegs every evening. It indeed was a pleasure to spend the evening with both
of them reminiscing the days gone by. When Mrs Alvarez passed away, he insisted on my driving him to the church
& thereafter to the cemetery, in my old Fiat car inspite of many other fancy cars being available that day. I really
felt very honored at his request. We met thereafter frequently and reminisced the good old days. Unfortunately on
retirement from HAL we shifted to Pune in the year 2000, but not before we met. Sadly that seemed to be our last
meeting. Till we meet again MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE-AMEN

A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. ~Henry Adams
Mr Alec Alvarez, fondly nicknamed ‘Sir Alec’ was an illustrious ‘old’ teacher of our beloved school. Having commenced teaching at the school in the pre-independence year (1939) under the principalshipof Fr. Lambert, he was appointed to teach Class 9 (the senior most class of the school) in Chemistry.
To him goes the credit of setting up the first Chemistry laboratory where the practical made theory come alive !
Later Mr. Alvarez also taught Physics and Mathematics along with Chemistry. The brilliant results his students achieved year after year bore testimony to his expertise and teaching ability. His sharp memory was truly amazing and he could unfailingly recognize his old students each time they visited him from far and wide.
Profound knowledge, great dedication to duty and meticulous planning were his trademarks.
Mr. Alvarez was Secretary of the OBA for over 17 years and carried out his duties in the most creditable manner. His organizational skills, approachability and tremendous helpfulness are to be commended. As Treasurer of the PTA, he handled Fancy Fetes and organized raffles with consummate ease.
His cheerful winning smile and a heart filled with goodness and love endeared to all he met. I remember sending my elder daughter Dhruti (whom he fondly called Droopy, as he could not pronounce her name with ease ) to him for coaching before her ICSE exam.
Modest in the face of success, never downcast when faced with setbacks, always level-headed and dependable. This remarkable man stayed true to type for 35 years. Retirement did not die his burnished spirit or dull the keen edge of his intellect.
The first Wed of every month a couple of old boys, more like Sir’s buddies, used to meet at his Rest House Road residence to share a peg and also recall fond memories of the school. Brandy was his all time favorite.
With a heavy heart and as I bid Sir goodbye, I open the slip of paper he had given me which reads ‘ For my Obituary’ - all useful information in 1963, 1968 and 1973 annuals.’ I will treasure this forever.
Friend, Guide and Mentor of the OBA, Mr Alvarez embodied the true spirit of the indomitable Josephite.
One of the greatest teachers St. Josephs’ Boys School has ever had. May his soul Rest in Peace.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
My dear Old Boys,
It gives me great pleasure to present before you a synopsis of the activities of your Association for the year 2013-14.
In addition to the usual, traditional events conducted and supported by the OBA each year like St. Joseph’s Feast cricket match, Christmas Dinner, Speech Day, Valedictory Day, OBA Connect events in Kerala, Mangalore, Coorg, Goa and the USA, the Managing Committee of the OBA has been a busy team.
OBA CONNECT EVENTSOur satellite chapters in Kerala, Mangalore, Goa and Coorg conduct their reunions each year. They expend substantial effort to organise them and, naturally, expect greater participation from Old Boys across India. Usually, more than half your Managing Committee definitely attends these events in addition to a handful of Old Boys from Bangalore. OBA Connect events are family oriented, great fun and are not fund raising events at all. I would urge everyone to make it a point to attend at least one Connect event in the coming year, if not more. It would make the commitment and hospitality of our friends out there, worth their while.
OBA BUZZWe conduct the OBA Buzz, every year, in June-July. We normally hold inter-house competitions in Elocution, Debate and Quiz. This year we have expanded the scope of the OBA Buzz beyond Elocution, Debate and Quiz to include Music, Creative Writing and Dramatics and have included students of primary and middle school as well. Fr. Clifford Sequeira, the Principal, has extended his unstinted support to this event. The OBA Buzz has now become an integral part of the school’s calendar and students look forward to participate and compete.
SCHOOL ANNUALS SCANNEDAll available school annuals from 1910 till date have been scanned as e-books. So now you can not only view the annuals in their original design, but as text as well. This enables you to search for names, events and dates in any annual. Pictures in the annuals have also been scanned along with associated legends as text. All scanned annuals are installed on a touch-screen device in the OBA Office. It is our plan to put this entire lot on our website, so that it is there for all to see, read, search and download.
OBA OFFICEThe OBA Office that sits right at the entrance of the newly built Sports Complex is now ready to serve all of you. The office has a conference area, an LCD projector, a lounge area, a fully operational wi-fi connection, renewed computer systems, and the scanned annuals always available to you on the touch screen system. The project was largely financed by Old Boys - primarily from the ISC batch of 1972. I would urge every Old Boy to come by to drop in to the office and catch up. The Managing Committee has spent several man-hours bringing the office to this state of readiness.
OBA CENTENARY YEAR - 2018The Old Boys’ Association was properly founded in 1918 and has continued to render yeoman service, without interruptions, since then. In another four years, we will celebrate that event-of-events – The OBA Centenary Year. A year of landmark achievements, a year when events, activities and programmes of no mean impact will take us to new heights for another hundred years.
This Managing Committee has begun the build-up to the Centenary year. I share with you some of the significant plans:
SJBHS - Old Boys’ Association Annual Report 2013 - 2014 SJBHS - Old Boys’ Association Annual Report 2013 - 2014 1918
SCIENCE EXHIBITIONWe plan to conduct the OBA Alvie and Chat Science Exhibition in memory of Mr. Alec Alvarez and Dr. David Chatterjee – two of the most well-known science teachers of yore. The event is still at the concept stage and we are working out details. This annual event should, ultimately, become the most prestigious inter-school competition in Bangalore.
TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMMEThis will be called the OBA St. Joseph’s Teacher Training Programme. Fundamentally, it goes beyond the B.Ed. programme. In fact, it has nothing to do with the B.Ed. programmes at all. It is not just about soft skills for teachers. It is a programme that will equip teachers with the ability to build creative, curious, thinking and responsible students while not straying from the set syllabus and curriculum. There is enough incentive for teachers to participate.
CENTENARY BOOKIt is proposed to publish the history of the Old Boys’ Association, to mark its Centenary. This will be an invaluable possession for any Old Boy to proudly place on his bookshelf.
We have begun to lay the path to 2018, a landmark year for us.
I place on record my appreciation and gratitude to the Jesuits, all the students, teachers and non-teaching staff of the school for tolerating the passion of the members of the Managing Committee.
Of course, I offer my eternal gratitude to the team, to each member of the Managing Committee that gave freely of his time, put his personal life on the block, spent hours putting things together to run your Association the way it should be – with passion, commitment, responsibility and, above all, with unimpeachable integrity. Great job, gentlemen!
In Faith and Toil,
Gopal Bengeri
President (2013 –14)
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - 2013PROF. SUBIR SACHDEV, Ph.D.
Professor of Physics - Harvard University
The Prize List for the years 1970 (STD. IV- A) and 1971 (STD. V-A), of St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, was pretty balanced with about 5 boys, or more, sharing prizes for different subjects.
In 1972, one boy from Delhi joined St. Joseph’s in the VI standard. No one asked him which school he had attended before joining our school. All we could see was that from 1972 to1976, the Prize List, for those five years, was highly simplified. The prizes for all the subjects - General Proficiency, Moral Science, Hindi, History, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics were taken by that fellow from Delhi.
There were, of course, prizes for III Language (Kannada), Best Scout and Best NCC Cadet that this boy very kindly allowed us, lesser mortals, to fight over.
The upshot of it all is that Subir Sachdev spent his first two years in Bangalore, at Bishop Cotton’s Boys’ High School because his application for admission to St. Joseph’s was rejected. Finally, after Fr.Hedwig Da’Costa was appointed Principal of St. Joseph’s, made the perfect decision in 1972, to admit Subir and his brother Amit Sachdev to St. Joseph’s. I wonder if people realize the significance of this action. It would have been a disaster for Subir because Bishop Cotton’s doesn’t even give a Lifetime Achievement Award!!
In keeping with his policy of topping every academic activity, Subir crowned his school career by topping the ICSE results with a perfect 6 and went on to complete his 11th and 12th from Kendriya Vidyalaya, ASC Centre and distinguished himself equally well there too.
He took the IIT-JEE while still in the 11th standard, was ranked second in the country and chose to study Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi in 1978. His father, Prof. D.K. Sachdev, himself a talented engineer-scientist, took up an offer in Washington D.C. and moved to the US in 1979. Subir applied for a transfer to the United States. A reluctant IIT-Delhi let Subir go and he was happily received at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
It was at MIT that Subir switched from Electrical Engineering to Physics. His undergraduate thesis was on the physics of single atoms in microwave cavities. He received the Apker Award from the American Physical Society for “outstanding achievement in physics by an undergraduate” in January 1983 for the thesis. It is now a chapter in the standard graduate textbook on quantum optics. Subir graduated from MIT in 1982.
In 1985, while most of his classmates had just graduated from professional courses or were in the first year of their first jobs, Subir Sachdev completed and was awarded his Ph.D. in Physics by Harvard University.
Dr. Subir Sachdev, then did the next best thing after studying Quantum Mechanics. Usha Pasi was also a student at Harvard and they figured they could take the Quantum Leap. So, Subir and Usha got married in 1985. They have two daughters Monisha and Menaka.
AT&T Bell Laboratories, in those days the world’s leading research facility in solid state physics, saw Subir doing a 2-year Post Doctoral Fellowship. It was on interacting with scientists here that Subir began his study of the Quantum Physics of electrons in solids.
Subir joined the faculty at Yale University and left 18 years later to return to Harvard University as a tenured Professor of Physics.
SJBHS - Old Boys’ Association Annual Report 2013 - 2014 SJBHS - Old Boys’ Association Annual Report 2013 - 2014 2120
While at Yale University, Subir made fundamental contributions to the theory of “Quantum Phase Transitions”, which helps understand the physical properties of numerous novel materials, including superconductors and certain classes of magnets. His book on this topic, now in its second edition, is hailed as a “theoretical masterpiece” by Physics Today, and forms the basis of much research in solid-state physics the world over.
More recently, in 2007, Subir proposed an incredible connection between Quantum Mechanics and String Theory. On the surface both subjects are poles apart and very different theories. As Subir himself says “ Solid State Physics, the study of condensed matter is about as far as one can possibly get from String Theory, without leaving Physics altogether.” The connection between Quantum Physics and String Theory that Subir propounds might help explain much of the phenomenon of entanglement, among other things. Subir’s research in this area has been summarized in a recent article published in Scientific American.
In recognition of the quality and productive nature of Subir’s work in the field of Quantum Mechanics and now proposing the union of Quantum Physics and String Theory, institutes across the world have recognized his work with numerous awards. He occupies the Maxwell Chair for the next three years in Theoretical Physics at the Perimeter Institute in Canada, has occupied the Lorentz Chair for 2012 at the Instituut -Lorentz in the Netherlands, the Distinguished Research Chair at the Preimeter Institute in Canada, was the main lecturer at the 100th Aniversary of the Solvay Conference in Physics at Burssels in 2011, delivered the Arnold Sommerfield lectures in Theoretical Physics in Germany in 2012 and is a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
We, at the Old Boys’ Association of the St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School recognize contribution of Professor Subir Sachdev and are proud of his achievements. We commend to you, Subir, this Lifetime Achievement Award - not as an end in itself, but as a sign of greater glory to come.

OBA - YOUNG ACHIEVER’S AWARD – 2013RAGHAVA K. K.
Artist, Author, Designer, Thinker, Entertainer
When one is born into a family of achievers, in which IIT and IIM are standard issue, like it or not, one is under pressure. In 1980, a boy was born to Leela and Kalyanaraman in Bangalore. They let him be. No pressure. They taught him to face the consequences of his decisions and support himself financially and emotionally.
Ten years later, Raghava K.K . found himself admitted to St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School from St. Anthony’s, across the street. Raghava kept his classmates thoroughly entertained with his wonderful caricatures of the teachers. One day, when those sketches were shown to the Principal Fr. Michael John, those caricatures found their way to the notice board, for all to see.
It was obvious that the boy had great artistic abilities. Raghava also had the reputation of being a mischievous lad during his school days. He still retains his boyish charm and winning smile.
One of India’s most well known artists in the world; Raghava started his career as a cartoonist at the Asian Age newspaper. Raghava is an experimental artist and does not allow medium to limit his creativity. He is inspired and encouraged by the likes of the Italian artist Luigi Ontani, the cartoonist Ranan Lurie who encouraged Raghava to start his cartoon academy in the ‘90s. Raghava has worked in different medium adapting it to the message he intends to convey. He is known, of late, to use technology to create works that seek to make the viewer an active participant in the artwork.
It is an honour to be invited to give the famous and immensely popular18-minute talks at TED Conferences - to be called upon to do four times, is something else. Raghava has been main stage speaker four years in a row, which is no mean feat.
Raghava is also a mentor to TED Fellows at eh Singularity University.
The National Geographic Society has named him their Emerging Explorer for 2013 - and you thought he was just an artist.
Raghava takes the Chair at the INK Fellows Programme. INK was formerly TEDIndia and is TED’s partner conference in India.
Small wonder then, that CNN names Raghava KK as One of India’s Most Remerkable Persons n 2010.
Raghava, those SUPW classes did somebody some good!
In recognition of all your achievements and while wishing you a delightfully bright future, on behalf of the Old Boys’ Association, St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School. I commend to you the OBA Young Achiever’s Award – 2013.

I read this Eulogy for Sir Alec on behalf of a small group of Old Boys who visited him regularly and also on behalf of all the Old Boys world-wide, especially those who have made it here on this sad, yet solemn day to bid farewell to an elegant man, an indomitable spirit, a great teacher and friend. Sir Alec, who has for long become part of academic folklore in Bangalore and beyond, was a man who dismantled many myths:
One, that the good die young – he was goodness personified and, as we know, almost lived to be a 100; two, that Chemistry was boring – he transported some of us into a world of delight; others into one of delirium; three, that when one retires one fades away – his sharp anecdotal recall, his interest in world affairs was legendary; four, that he was just a St Joseph’s man – my Facebook family shows Cottonians, Germanites and others saluting him.
In 2003, I had written an article in the Deccan Herald titled A Tribute to Sir Alec. Many were the calls that came in asking, “Why tribute, he’s thankfully still alive!”. “For him to read”, I replied and Sir Alec was amused by that. He understood the nuances of the unconventional, the alternate as well as the provocative. But alas, today he will not give me his trademark nod, his shift and his chuckle.
Now “How, Sir?” Alec, some might ask. I quote from the Tribute: “ Not Sir Alec as in Alec Guinness or Alec Stewart, but a knighted Sir nevertheless to all Josephites! Sir Alec Alvares, Knight of the Order of St Joseph. Sir to all, the young and the not so young. A man of steely resolve yet genteel manners, turning Chemistry into an exciting mystery, colorless fluids into magic potions. Sir Alec did more than just teach Chemistry. He molded many a dull mind into an enquiring and dependable entity, giving it potential and a future. A future in Chemical Engineering, during my time. I never asked him what his reaction was to my crossing the Rubicon … into Architecture. But I can imagine his response:
“ Perhaps not analytical enough,” he might have said, “ but magical all the same”.
He was a democratic man and it was best seen in the motley band of old students that periodically gathered at his residence. Scientists, Writers, Bankers, Engineers, Army Generals, Journalists… architects. He always played the most gracious host. Unwittingly we all entered a Time Machine. Different times but the same hallowed space. You can’t beat the selective recall of a schoolboy. History of the East India Co was a tranquillizer. History of St Joseph’s, an elixir, with a potent mix of profundity and tomfoolery. All this re-enacted in real-time animation at Sir Alec’s whilst he, like a smiling Buddha, presided. Proud of his disciples – wayward though they might momentarily seem!
And his house! It was a veritable repository of knowledge and wisdom. After all it housed 4 teachers, all legends in their own right. His wife taught the fourth, her sister the sixth and her husband did physics and mathematics. All deceased many years ago. Their collective gift in years to St Joseph’s was substantial. Yes, perhaps a century and a half ! “ Think about it long and hard”, I had written in the Tribute “ no imagination can stretch long enough, except perhaps that of a Josephite!”
So here lies Mr. Alec Alvarez, suddenly quiet, all peaceful, leaving behind thousands who loved him, wondering “Why?”.
We were all looking forward to celebrating Sir Alec’s hundredth Birthday later this year. Old boys and their OBA were making plans. The enthusiasm was palpable. After all he was the OBA’s longest serving Secretary - for 17 years and not even an old boy! Then, like being hit with a wet sock on the back of their heads, just out of the blue, his followers were facing a different Mr. Alvarez - one who was completely resigned and was no longer interested in living any longer. I am sure no Josephite was quite prepared for this sudden change in their most venerated teacher. Apparently, Mr. Alvarez had lost a dear friend recently, and took it very hard leaving him despressed.
Well, Sir, you were our dear friend as well. How do you think we feel now? Some of us are going to wonder how to keep occupied on Sunday mornings. Your students will make their visits to school, but the pilgrimage will be incomplete without being able to call on you. Come on, Sir, this is unfair and gross indiscipline!
We’re going to celebrate your hundredth - with or without you.
Everyone says there will never be another like you, Mr.Alvarez. I am not a praying man, Sir Alec, but today, on behalf of the Old Boys’ Association which you nurtured so lovingly and of which you were an Honorary Life Member, I’m making an exception for you. I’m asking God to keep you in peace forever and am asking him to use his infinite resources and give us a replacement - another Alvi.
God Bless Your Soul, Sir.

To Sir, with Love - from the OBA
On one of the last times I met him he asked me to pull out an orderly set of envelopes containing old photographs. Overwritten on some, one read: Handle with Care – Fragile. Some of those sepia prints so old and frayed at the edges that a few boys in them now long since deceased. Recalling many of the schoolboy pranks of some of them we were amazed by his unerring memory. He knew who in it had was caught smoking in the corridor and who had seen quietly pleading with his assistant for help in a practical test. But he was forgiving, always. Some teachers caned, some flung dusters, others rulered your knuckles. Not Sir Alec. I suppose he came from that liberal mind set that knew it was from the non-conventional, from amongst the rule-breakers that great minds are made.
When I heard of his passing I was naturally saddened, more so because we had begun to believe that he was immortal! Time collapsed around me and I was transported into the corridors of my old school. It felt like déjà vu walking in single file towards the chemistry lab and imagining being once again enthralled by this soft spoken, patient, democratic man who treated the bright and the dull with unerring fairness. It was indeed a moment to cherish.
Our collective last wish: Sir Alec, may you live to be a hundred and more, was not to be.
But that time-worn phrase still resonates with meaning because, in our hearts he is will live forever.
Goodbye Sir Alec.

The 16th of January this year was TuB’Shevat the Jewish “New Year of the Trees” which falls on the 15th of Shevat of the Hebrew Calendar. The “Tu” is a combination of the hebrew letters tav and vav. It is the time when most fruit bearing trees in Israel are richly laden with its produce.
It was on this day that Fr. Furtado went on to be with the Lord.
Interestingly, in John chapter 15 Lord Jesus Christ said “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” John 15:5. Fr. Furtado had a very fruitful life in that he taught us so many good values and had a profound impact on our lives. I last met Fr. Furtado around fifteen years ago when, with my brother Abraham Joseph, I had gone to visit Mount St. Joseph. He was working in the garden tending to the trees and plants there. My brother mistook him for the “mali”, very much like how Mary Magdalene mistook the risen Lord Jesus as the gardener.
It was moving to see a man of his stature employed in such a chore. A man of his intellect could have been a professor in some university teaching Chemistry. Who said that a gardeners work was any way inferior? After all the good Lord placed man in the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it. Fr. Furtado taught me Chemistry in the IX std. and I loved the way he did it. I would make extra effort in studying the reactions and memorize the chemical equations before class. I still remember what happens when you add conc. H2SO4 to KMnO4. I am surprised that I did not pursue Chemistry after my degree, but what Fr. Furtado did was that he really gave me a love for the subject.
Fr. Furtado was a disciplinarian. He wanted us to sing the national and the school anthem with our heart, soul and body. I specially remember the refrain in our school anthem “My hands and God’s whate’er the odds” which he sung with much gusto. In the school chapel he would not tolerate a lackadaisical attitude in worship. He would exhort us to “sing so loud that the chapel roof flies off ”. His preaching was filled with “fire and brimstone” and put the fear of God into you. Yet the boys loved him, and congregated around him when he was on the field. He was athletic. He could kick a football right across the field.
I remember the times when he would walk down the assembly line hiding the cane in the sleeve of his cassok and it would materialize in his hand to discipline the unruly. Woe unto him who had his hair growing long and if it did fall over the collar he would receive a smack with the cane and be marched off to the enthusiastic barber waiting at a classroom near the refectory.
In my own search for meaning in life I often met with Fr. Futado to talk to him about spiritual things. It was in my IX std that he introduced me to the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin a French paleontologist and geologist and took part in the discovery of Peking man. He was a Jesuit priest too. It was a time when I was trying to reconcile my faith with what was taught in the classroom especially in the subject of biology when we were introduced to the concepts of the theory of evolution by natural selection by Darwin. The book he gave me to read at that time was the “Phenomenon of Man”. I tried reading the book at that time and was quite impressed with the idea of the “Omega Point” to which the whole of knowable reality as a process converge. Also the concept of the noosphere (a term coined by him) formed by interaction of human mind. The noosphere grows as more and more minds interact. The concept is relevant in the world today as more and more people interact via the internet’s social networking sites. Like the geosphere which gave rise to complex molecules and the biosphere the emergence of sentinent beings so the noosphere will in turn promote the evolution towards the Logos, namely Christ who draws all things unto Himself and who transcends the evolving universe.

We all loved him and he did unconditionally. There was so much legions of Josephites learnt from him. My heart is heavy as I cannot be at his celebratory funeral, but my mind is there with all my siblings who have fortunately gathered to wish him God speed.
Rev Fr Simon was the oldest Jesuit of the Karnataka Jesuit Province till he just passed on this evening, the 16th of Jan 2014 at Mount St Joseph at the ripe age of 95.
“Futty” as he was affectionately called by his students, was first Prefect of the Senior dorm and the Vice Principal of our school between 1960 and 1975. He was known to be a disciplinarian and yet was loved for his ability to delegate responsibility to the House captains and Prefects. He taught Maths, English, Chemistry and French to foreign students. He was especially remembered for his great love for music and in leading the school anthem with great gusto. He was often sighted on the field playing a serious game of football. He was awarded the OBA Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 1997-98.
At Mount St Joseph, he pursued leading several batches of nuns make a series of retreats and was their spiritual advisor. In his younger days he was known for his firery sermons and witty anecdotes. He was so proud of his Alma Mater. He was forthright with what ever he had to say and was always prepared to meet his Lord and master whenever the time came. May he find eternal reward in the bosom of our lord.

The OBA organized the OBA Buzz, the annual event for school students, which included Debate, Elocution and Quiz competitions for students of Class 5 onwards. Certificates, trophies and cash prizes were given to the winners. Apart from the above, the OBA organize its annual Christmas Dinner, the Saleh Ahmed Trophy, the inter-alumni association tennis ball cricket matches in celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph, the Blue and White Bash and the OBA Day. The OBA also gave out hampers to Senior Old Boys and staff.
Scholarships to School:We had total of 130 applications. Zaki Khaleeli and Brian D’Lima met 126 parents individually. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs was awarded as scholarships on a merit cum need bases. The requirment was around Rs. 15 lakhs but due to a shortage of funds, only around Rs. 10 lakhs could be disbursed. Fee instalments were paid directly to the school and the applicants were kept informed.
Staff Medical Insurance:The Staff Medical Insurance scheme covers full-time teachers who have competed two years of service in the school and their families. Also, all retired teachers and staff who had completed 10 years of service are covered under the scheme along with their spouses. Sumir Hinduja, the brain behind the scheme, helps us in negotiating the premium. Last year, our premium was Rs. 3.5 lakhs and was fully paid by the OBA. It covers medical insurance for each family upto a maximum of Rs. 2 lakhs. This has benefited a number of teachers, both retired and serving, as well as non-teaching staff of the school who would not have been able to afford good medical treatment on their own.
Awards:This year, over Rs. 1,00,000 was given as prizes to the students passing out of the ISC and ICSE classes. The prizes that were given are for standing first in the school, being the best in studies and games, being the best swimmer, for securing the highest marks in each subject etc. The prizes include a trophy, a certificate and a cheque. These awards are sponsored by the Batch of 1968, Batch of 1975, Bashiruddin Babu Khan, Mario de P Miranda, Rev.Fr. Simon Furtado and Rajesh Kheny.
OBA BUZZ – 2014:This year, we conducted a number of events under the umbrella of ‘OBA Buzz’. The events that were conducted were Debate, Elocution, Quiz, Essay Writing, Western Music, Indian Music, Instrumental Music and Inter-House Skit competitions. Maurice de Rebello and Shashi Lewis did an excellent job in conducting the Quiz competition.
Shashi Lewis, with the help of Gopal Bengeri, Gavin Cordeiro and Ian Lewis conducted the Elocution and Debate competitions and the response was very positive. Our gratitude goes out to the above-mentioned Old Boys for taking time off to conduct these competitions. Thanks also go out to Shivaram who sponsored the Warrior Award for Elocution and Maurice de Rebello for sponsoring the prizes for Creative Writing.
Career Guidance for the students of Std. 9:The OBA, along with the PTA, conducted a Career Guidance programmefor the 9th Std. students. 205 students took the test and 160 students along with their parents came for personal counselling sessions where various career options were recommended. Our thanks goes out to the PTA for helping give a wonderful opportunity to our budding Josephites to choose their careers wisely.
Welcome to OBA (Students of Stds. 10 & 12):The OBA organized a special function for the students passing out of Stds. 10 & 12. Ian Faria and Gopal Bengeri addressed the students and a memento and a booklet on the OBA were given to the students. This was followed by tea.
Christmas Hampers:Joe D’Mello and Brian D’Lima visited very senior Old Boys as well as senior retired teachers and their families and gave them a Christmas Hamper. This hamper was sponsored by Pramodh Naidu. Many retired teachers were grateful to the OBA for its thoughtfulness.
Fellowship Programmes:Blue & White Bash:The event was held at the Catholic Club and was attended by over 1000 people. The Band in attendance was A26 from Goa and it catered to all age groups. The Bash was attended by over 1,200 people.
OBA Day:OBA Day was celebrated on the 2nd of September. The day started with Mass, celebrated by Fr. Stany D’Souza, Rector and assisted by Fr.Hedwig Da Costa, Old Boy and former Principal. Mass was followed by placing of a wreath at the War Memorial by Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Principal of the School. The school flag was unfurled by a senior Old Boy and the singing of the school song was led by the school choir. The school song was sung with old boys grouped according to their Houses.
The OBA Office was inaugurated by Fr. Clifford Sequeira, Principal of the School and Mr. Rahul Dravid (1989), a prominent Old Boy.
After the blessing, we had around 350 Old Boys for Breakfast.
Group photograph followed the Breakfast, where we had the take the photograph in two batches to accommodate all the Old Boys present.
At the AGM, The OBA Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Prof. Subir Sachdev (1976) and The OBA Young Achiever of the Year to K.K. Raghava.
OBA Day saw the celebrations of three batches - the batch of 1963 which celebrated 50 years of having passed out of school, the batch of 1973 which celebrated 40 years of having passed out of school and the batch of 1988 which celebrated its 25th year of passing out. The batch of 1988 sponsored the Breakfast and Lunch on OBA Day.

WELCOME TO NEW RECTOR
As we bid farewell to our beloved Rector, Rev. Fr. Stanislaus D’Souza, SJ at the end of the previous academic term, we waited eagerly for the newly appointed Rector of the St. Joseph’s Institutions of Bangalore, to be heralded into Jesuit Nivas!
On the 1st of July, 2014, at a special assembly, the boys of St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School welcomed a humble, down-to-earth and extremely simple man, the Rector Rev. Fr. Anthony Joseph, SJ into the portals of SJBHS a man to be at the helm of the Bangalore Jesuit Educational Society!
The tenth standard students, on behalf of the entire school, formally welcomed Rev.Fr. Anthony Joseph, S.J, who then hoisted the school flag, which unfurled with a cascade of rose petals. The solemn school song followed.
As nothing good can ever be achieved without God’s grace, a prayer invoking the Almighty’s blessings on a happy, successful and blessed tenure for the Rector, followed. As Fr. Anthony Joseph, SJ was here to labour in the Lord’s Vineyard, the hymn “In His Time” was appropriate and was indeed a meaningful rendition for the occasion.
Rev. Fr. Clifford Sequeira, SJ Principal of SJBHS, took great pride in introducing the newly appointed Rector to the audience, who were in awe of the past achievements of Fr. Anthony Joseph, SJ who was ordained just ten years ago! The Principal assured the assembly that though quite young; the Rector was qualified and had enough experience to be their mentor not only to shoulder their direction for growth but also to be a friend, philosopher and guide. It was revealed that Fr. Anthony Joseph, SJ was not only intellectual, disciplined and austere in his way of life but loved the poor, in keeping with the true Jesuit ethos!
A bouquet of flowers made the welcome even more meaningful followed by the welcome song “Welcome to the family.” The staff of SJBHS also welcomed Rector with a welcome speech, calling the occasion ‘a milestone’ in the events at SJBHS!!
Finally, it was the turn of the Rector, who addressed the gathering saying that he was overwhelmed by the welcome to SJBHS. He also told the students that they were indeed blessed to be a part of the Josephite family. The Rector asked the students to be men and women for others and to be responsible citizens. Bestowing his choicest blessings on each one, Rev. Fr. Anthony Joseph, SJ wished the students and staff of SJBHS the very best for the academic year ahead.
The National Anthem drew the curtain on the special assembly of 1st July, 2014.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Old Boys,
It gives me great pleasure to pen a few lines on the occasion of the OBA annual get-together. It is the deep and enduring love for your Alma Mater which has brought you together. Your affection, your loyalty, your bonds are the very heart and soul of the OBA. It is this very bond which has made St. Joseph’s one of India’s most respected and famous schools. The OBA has played a stellar role in rebuilding the school, supporting several initiatives for staff and student welfare and bringing glory to the school through the contribution of Old Boys at national and international levels.
During the last year, one thing I have observed is the immense contribution made by the OBA in supporting the activities of the school. It is indeed heartening to note that the OBA has involved itself in many of the activities, especially in providing assistance to teachers and students. Thanks to your efforts, many meritorious but financially backward children have been able to study in this school. I am sure that many more of you will come forward to do your bit in providing scholarships for our needy boys.
As you entered school this morning, your eyes would have first been drawn to the statue of St. Joseph. Just as his hand is placed protectively on the shoulder of his Son, so it has been placed on yours. I pray that our patron Saint will always be by your side to protect you. As our School song says “My hand and Gods…” may your thoughts, words and actions always be guided by the Almighty.
As you meet today, full of good cheer, reviving old memories and forging new friendships, I wish your reunion all the very best. May the blessings of our Patron Saint Joseph be with you always. Once again, I wish you a wonderful day and God bless.

FAREWELL TO MR. CHARLES NORONHA,
VICE PRINCIPAL OF SJBHS
Mr. Charles Noronha, a not-so-very tall man who stood ‘tall’ at SJBHS…a not-so-strict looking man who was able to look graceful even during a ‘dressing-down’ session of some erring students….a humble man who commanded respect in spite of trying to do one of the worst jobs at school viz. “Administration”! His name generates a twinkle in the eye of every Josephite—past and present—as twenty-five years of being the Vice-Principal is no ordinary feat, not to mention ten added years of being a teacher as well as Sports Secretary of SJBHS—a career spanning decades from his entry into the official rolls of SJBHS way back in 1979!
On the 21st of June, 2014, the management along with the staff, students and Old Boys thought it befitting to place on record the service rendered by Mr. Noronha and to give to such a personality a memorable farewell. The day began with a special assembly wherein Mr. Noronha was welcomed by a thunderous applause which left hardly an eye dry…. as memories of myriad assemblies came to mind where Mr. Noronha was always on centre stage.
The School Flag was hoisted, as at every assembly, but as the School Song rang out through the cool morning air, it was Mr. Noronha’s voice that could be heard loud and clear—again a reminder of many such occasions gone by!
The prayer and the prayer song by the ISC students were apt for the occasion—asking for God’s blessings on the Vice-Principal for a happy, healthy and peaceful retired life. The speech given by one of the students was a summary of the life, work and qualities of Mr. Noronha. The farewell song and a poem by the students were indeed a tribute to a long, noteworthy career while the bouquet of flowers presented bore testimony to the love and affection of the staff, students and old boys.
The Principal’s speech was a synopsis of the co-operation rendered and the generous contribution made by Mr.Noronha to the growth and glory of SJBHS. Mr. Shivaprakash’s speech highlighted the wondrous experiences that he could recall as a colleague of Mr. Noronha. Last but not the least were the words spoken by the man of the occasion—right from the heart – for which he got a standing ovation from the students. The assembly ended with the national anthem.
The afternoon saw Mr.Noronha back as a special invitee to a lunch with the staff where bouquets and speeches by the older staff brought back fond memories. A photo session followed to capture and store the moment for future recall!
FROM THE ‘LORRY OFFICE’ TO THE FUTURISTIC OFFICEThe OBA Kerala Connect 2012 at the Yacht Club, Kochi was really memorable and will always be cherished by all present as that’s when Fr. Celestine Sera disclosed that he was fully committed to a new OBA office in the state-of-the-art sports complex under construction. This momentous announcement was greeted enthusiastically with loud cheers by the gathering. What a dream come true! And true to his word, the foundation laying ceremony happened in September of the same year with Fr. Sera and Fr. Stany D’Souza, the Rector as the Chief Guest.
The allocated office space was easily four times the size of the then existing office, which was fondly referred to as ‘our lorry office’. Now that the OBA was formally given a place that was of a respectable size, the OBA committee sprung into action to flesh out the office. Obviously, money was required to help furnish the interiors to a specific and functional design. Arjun Nambisan (1989) offered his services at no cost and soon the final design was approved along with the budget. The batch of 1972 generously contributed Rs. 10,00,000/- to the cause. PriyeshMody (1990) donated the wooden flooring along with a couple of old boys also pitching in. Some more old boys have committed to be generously open-minded in helping us finish the place.
The OBA committee wished to inaugurate the new office on September 8, 2013, our OBA Day. Once the deadline was set for the office to be functionally finished, work proceeded at a feverish pace. The night before the inauguration was chaotic with the wooden flooring not done, painting in patches, hinges on cupboards not to be seen and debris everywhere. Oh Lord, will we ever get things done in time? Well, biryani and kebabs did the trick and the team toiled through the night sawing and hammering and brushing and fixing. The following morning, at the stroke of 9, saw the work team leave the office after a few last minute touches and with the satisfaction that they had delivered.
Fr. Clifford Sequeira, the new principal and our OBA Treasurer, was pleasantly surprised that the work was done in time for the inauguration as, on his visit a week earlier, he had some doubts on seeing the amount of work still pending. But the committee truly believed in the school motto of Faith and Toil and were determined to keep to their commitments. The new OBA office was reverentially blessed by Fr. Sequeira and formally inaugurated by Rahul Dravid amidst much cheering, clapping and shouting.
The OBA is at the cusp of reaching its 100th year in 2018 and has many miles to go and many fields to conquer. The new OBA office is expected to become a hub for camaraderie, fellowship, networking, nostalgia, giving back to society and so much more. The futuristic office has been designed to have specified areas as well as meet certain functional needs. The wifi-enabled office now has a meeting table, sofa lounge, display shelves, secretary cabin, staff workplace and a store cum pantry. The office also stocks a variety of memorabilia from ties and t-shirts to caps and lapel pins. The office is fitted with an overhead projector with the potential to talk to our national and overseas chapters via video link. And old boys visiting the office can now engross themselves in all the old school annuals and OBA Calling by digitally exploring them in an interactive e-book. More content will be added to the database as we mature. This OBA office is genuinely the precursor of new things to come and new horizons to conquer.

THE DIGITAL KIOSK
As you walk into the glitzy new office of the OBA, you are greeted by a kiosk that is a veritable gold mine - a treasure trove of the digital versions of the school annuals, including the very first one that was published as far back as in 1910.
The gizmo allows you to pinpoint the very page on which your favourite Principal, your favourite teacher or your best friend at school is mentioned, across the entire gamut of the archive. Would be remiss to not make a mention of the page on which your examination results are listed and the page where your photograph, several years younger, is depicted - you proudly posing as part of the victorious school team, your deeds having enriched her crown.
97 annuals of nearly 15,000 pages that tell the story of the school’s glorious past have been digitised and preserved for posterity. Irreplaceable that they are, none of the books were unbound from their original covers and were scanned using a state-of-the-art book scanner and then converted into searchable e-books, simulating an experience as close as possible to reading the actual publications.
The annual of the year in which you joined the school, of the year in which you won accolades for your House, of the year in which your class photo is published, the year in which you were the Valedictorian are all available at the click of a few buttons and soon, will be available for you to read off the world wide web.
On completion of the scanning process, the original tomes have been individually bound, embossed and vacuum-packed to last out an eternity. If you do wish to take home a print of the very first article that you had penned whilst at school or of the page that boasts of your having broken the long-standing record in the relay, the office printer is at your disposal for a nominal fee.
You are invited to visit the OBA Office and relive the moments that you so cherish..
TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME
The school is now full - full of classrooms, full of children - from the LKG, all the way to the 12th standard. Ours is, now, a completely integrated school. A parent can now admit a child into the LKG, and the child can complete his entire schooling in one place, right here, in the middle of town.
We already have almost 3,000 students on rolls and more than a hundred teachers. It’s quite a crowd. Now, if we have to retain and improve the standards of education in Joseph’s we have to be able to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of excellent teachers - teachers, who not only have good qualifications and experience, but teachers who will make a difference to the institution and its students. It is no longer possible for a teacher to walk into a classroom assuming that the students do not know. Everyone has unprecedented access to enormous amounts of information today.
It has become more imperative than ever to attend a school to imbibe good virtue, be able to play games (other than on computers), exercise mind and body, get along with others, be humbled by another’s achievements, learn others’ cultures, learn other languages, learn to communicate, learn to share, learn to give, to be creative, to question, to investigate, to learn to look beyond the obvious and thereby be of use to society in more ways than one. It is also important for students to understand failure, cope with and get over it.
No curriculum covers this, by default. Then who is to teach the children all of this? Yes, the teachers of course. But do the teachers know all of this? It will be unfair to expect that of them.
So, the Managing Committee has initiated a Teachers’ Training Programme (TTP). The programme, initially for teachers of St. Joseph’s, intends that teachers undergo training in areas that are not covered by the B.Ed. programmes. The curriculum in the University’s B.Ed. programme is neither sufficient nor complete. Broadly, the TTP seeks to train teachers to be team players first – for the school’s management to succeed in its objectives; it needs a team of teachers that work together, preparing one class of students for their next. You all know what it takes to get 11 players to play for and as a team and not for themselves, or worse, sometimes even against one another. Well, now think what it would take to get a100+ teachers to form and function as a team.
The Programme promotes thinking among teachers, trains them in different ways to use new, even unconventional methods, to make students love learning. Some of the philosophy of the courses stems from the adage: I see – I know; I know – I do; I do – I understand; I understand – I learn. The programme is not envisaged to conduct the B.Ed. programme at all. It is not a degree awarded to the participants. It is seen as a series of different programmes creating a newer and better approach to teaching. It is in addition to the B. Ed. Qualification. This is where teachers will learn how to engage with the student at his level, be part of and develop loyalty to the institution, improve not only their own strengths by attending these courses, but to enhance their teaching, to leave an indelible impression on the students, to make them enjoy the process of learning, and, from the same curriculum, help them learn more than anyone else does.
We hope that the programme will not only be useful for teachers of St Joseph’s Boys’ High School but, eventually, to all faculty of all Josephite institutions, and gradually, as it gains momentum and acceptance, in all educational institutions. The plan is to offer a wide variety of courses that teachers can choose from – each course awards a certain number of credits and separate certificates.
One readily sees the tremendous potential this programme has, to improve the quality of education simply by making better teachers. The school’s management has assured us of its complete and total support for the programme.

BATCH REUNIONS
The Class of 1988 had a reunion in September 2013 to mark 25 years of their having passed out of school. Around 70batchmates from across the country and overseas spent a weekend togetherat the Movenpick Hotel and Spa, Bangaloreto celebrate the occasion.
The Class of 1983 got together during December 2013 to commemorate 30 years of their passing out of school. Amongst various celebrations, a reunion was held at the school on December 14, 2013 to which each of their teachers was invited and felicitated.
The Class of 1969 (AISSC ‘68/ISC ‘69) meets up each December at the Bangalore Club for dinner and fellowship. The date and sponsors of the annual event are usually circulated over e-mail well in advance to ensure maximum attendance. The event of December 2013 was well attended with a couple of Old Boys coming down from oversea locations - N. R. Venkatesh(Geneva), Oosman Abdulla (New Jersey), Mark Lushington(Abu Dhabi), A. C.Premkumar (Hong Kong) to catch up with their Bangalore-basedclassmates AvijitDutt,Maqsood, Shailendra Gupta, H. Satish Chandra, P. B.Cariappa, Nandakumar, ViswanathSetty, Ravikumar,John Tharakan,V. F. David, George Ollapally, HemchandraBasappa and a few others. Irfan Razack, a regular, was however conspicuous by his absence. Most Old Boys were accompanied by their spouses.
The Class of 1989 caught up in smaller groups on a number of occasions to celebrate 2014 as the 25th year of their having passed out of school. A bigger, more formal reunion is planned in September 2014,which a larger number of classmates is expected to attend.
SJBHS OBA CONNECT - COORG 2013 was held on November 9, 2013 at the Bamboo Club, Pollibetta. The event was attended by as many as 55 Old Boys and their families, taking the attendance at the event to cross the 100 mark.
Registration for the event commenced at 5 p.m. and was followed by the AGM of the Coorg Chapter.
The meeting was called to order by Ashok Chengappa (1975), President of the Coorg Chapter while C.C. Thimaiah (1984), Vice President and P. Ajit Bopanna (1975), Secretary took the dias along with the special guest for the evening - Gopal Bengeri (1976), President of the OBA.
The proceedings began with the gathering observing a minute's silence in memory of the Old Boys who had passed away during the year and was followed by the singing of the School Song.
Ashok Chengappa spoke briefly on the activities of the Coorg chapter during the past year and C.C. Thimaiah then invited Gopal Bengeri to address the gathering. Gopal elaborated on the role that the OBA plays today, not only in bringing Old Boys of SJBHS together but also in helping the needy by awarding scholarships each year.
The floor was then thrown open to any Old Boy who wished to speak. Alex Pillay recalled his days at school when he was part of the 'invincible' relay team that won every race that they participated in. Kumar Mandanna (1952) fondly remembered how Mr. Alec Alvares had helped him during his schooldays and had even sent Mathai to call him for the final exam, which he had missed to attend. Kumar mentioned that Mr. Alvares will soon be 99 years old and that Mr. Alvares has expressed that he, with the good wishes of his former pupils, would like to live to be a 100 and more.
The next item on the agenda was to elect the Managing Committee of the Coorg chapter for the coming year. It was unanimously decided that the current committee continues in office for another year, with an Old Boy also proposing that the committee continues to occupy office for a term of 5 years. The committee expressed their reservation in taking on the task for a longer period to which Jeevan Alvarez (1986) quoted his former History teacher, Mr. Hanumantha Rao - "Yes, he was the King but his throne was not a bed of roses I say!", putting the matter to rest!
C.C.Thimaiah then invited Ajit Bopanna to propose the Vote of Thanks. Ajit thanked all those who helped in organising the event, the members of the Managing Committee of the OBA and all the Old Boys and families present at the occasion.
Band 'Jukebox' then took centre-stage and the floor was thrown open.
Bonhomie among Josephites was evident all along, with the well-organised evening lasting well into the night.

SJBHS OBA CONNECT – Goa 2014The fifth edition of the Kerala OBA Connect was held on 24th of May 2014 at the Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom. 'SJBHS OBA CONNECT - GOA 2014' was held on August 2 and 3, 2014 at the Chalston Beach Resort,
Calangute. The event was attended by over 30 Old Boys and their families from different parts of the country.
The programme for the evening of the 2nd commenced with Registration and was followed up with live music and dinner. As Old Boys and families took to the dance floor, Rahul Tadimalla (Toddy - 1997) took charge of the keyboard and led the band.
The Annual General Meeting of the Goa Chapter was held on the morning of the 3rd where Michael Rozalla (1956) was elected President of the chapter and Fulgence Rodrigues (1955) its Vice President. Lloyd Macedo (1974) and Hubert Saldanha (1977) were elected Secretary and Treasurer respectively and Amod Borkar (1975), Oscar D'Souza (1968) and A. Nazareth (1964) were elected Members of the Managing Committee.
The AGM was followed by the singing of the school song, again led by Toddy on the keyboard. Lloyd Macedo then thanked all the Old Boys for attending the event and handed over to Michael Rozalla to address the gathering. Michael briefly touched upon the activities of the Goa chapter over the past year. Lloyd then invited Gopal Bengeri (1976), President of the OBA, to share his thoughts. Gopal elaborated on the activities undertaken by the Managing Committee of the OBA and invited all to attend the OBA Day at Bangalore. He then thanked Lloyd and all members of the Goa chapter for all of their efforts in conducting the very well arranged event.
Lloyd then took a moment to remember the Old Boys of St. Joseph's College, as SJBHS was then known, who were drafted in World War I. He exclaimed that 2014 marks the centenary of the war, at the start of which in 1914, the call went out for young men of the Empire to fight for King & Country. He mentioned that of all the educational institutions in India at the time, St. Joseph’s ranked first in terms of the number of her alumni that responded and that no school in India had sent so many soldiers to fight for the British Empire than did St. Joseph’s. He went on to note that by the time the war had ended four years later, at least 369 Josephites including 94 officers had seen battle in the land, sea and air of which at least 28 had laid down their lives.
Thus concluded the formal proceedings of the afternoon. Karibu Tanzania - "Spring Brok", African Dancers from Dar-es-Salaam, then enthralled all with their spellbinding acrobatics. With a Goan band in attendance, the afternoon rolled on with Old Boys from across batches reminiscing about the days spent at SJBHS. Lunch that included a delectable spread of seafood and other Goan fare was then served.
The event concluded with the cutting of a cake by Michael Rozalla and Gopal Bengeri to mark the fifth edition of the SJBHS OBA CONNECT at Goa.
The meeting was called to order by singing the school song with Josephite Rahul Tadimalla on the key board. Chaired by the Kerala Chapter President Mr. T J Karimpanal, the meeting commenced by conveying our condolences to Josephites K. C. Jose and K C Thomas who lost their brother K C James (1968 Batch ) on the 7th of September 2013. Condolences were also offered to the family and friends of Mr. Babu Khan (1959 batch), Rev Fr. Furtado and Mr. Alec Alwares who passed away recently. A minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed souls. A message from OBA President Mr. Gopal Bengeri who was unable to attend owing to health reasons was read out by OBA Vice President Mr. Rajeev Shenoy.
Mr. K T Sebastian, requested the OBA team to amend the school records to include information on house captains whose names are missing and stated that most of them were from the Kerala Chapter. He also agreed to compile the details and submit the same to Bangalore OBA. Dr. K E Eapen also recalled few of the names of the Captains from the missing records. Our President Mr. Karimpanal handed over a cheque for Rs.1, 00, 000 to Mr. Rajeev Shenoy as a contribution to the OBA Fund from members of the Kerala Chapter. The meeting concluded with special thanks to the Josephites from Bangalore, Coorg, Goa, Bombay and to Ajay Peter who came down from Dubai only to attend our meet and of course to our better halves and children. This was followed by the school song once again and continued with fellowship and dinner.
