Inside Report On Wildlife Management By DAN CARROLL Sr. Wildlife Biologist In the early to mid 1800 ? s, purple JoostHfe *^wfcs Introduced to the United States from Europe. Since the early 19th century, the plant has invaded wetlands throughout much of the northeastern United States and adjacent Canada. It has displac- ed indigenous vegetation and diminished the quality of wildlife habitats. Purple loosestrife occurs most commonly in wet habitats, such as flood plains, marshes and along streams, rivers and drainage dit- ches. Once established, the plant is extremely hardy. Its tolerance to changes in soil moisture and temperature, along with its pro- lificacy, give it a competitive ad- vantage over most wetland plant species, including cattail. Conse- quently, many productive wetlands which were interspersed with a variety of plant species are rapidly turning into a monotypic stand of loostrife. Needless to say, this drop in plant diversity will be followed by a decrease in numbers and variety of wildlife inhabiting such areas. After loostrife invades a wetland area, biologists have observed the following: 1) decrease in use by migrating waterfowl; 2) decrease in waterfowl nesting; 3) decrease in muskrat populations; and 4) decrease in number and diversity of other marsh associated wildlife. At the Oak Orchard and Tonawan- da Wildlife Management Areas, there are approximately 40 dcres of purple loostrife. Currently, most of the loostrife exists in isolated clumps and small stands up to an acre in size. State personnel have been involv- ed with various management techni- ques to control this exotic week since 1980. The most commonly used method is using a Rome disc or disc plow to turn and cut-up the various stands of loostrife. The area is disc- ed twice and then reflooded with 12- 18 inches of water. This techmque has resulted in 90-95 per cent control in treated areas. In areas which are too wet to sup- port mechanical equipment or in dense stands of brush and trees (hedgerows), biologists are ex- perimenting with the herbicide Roundup or Rodeo. The herbicide was applied by hand-spraying to several test plots of loostrife in 1983 and resulted in a 99-100 per cent con- trol. In 1984, Roundup was applied to approximately 13 acres of loostrife single of 686 and high triple of 1,977 issue a twice in the third on Stewart's dou- ble and Hougtaling's home run. Over the next four innings, Gonzales retired the side in order. Dansville had 13 hits in the win at Geneseo including Rauber's solo homer in the fourth. Sullivan's dou- ble and Gonzles' single gave the Mustangs a run in the first inning. In the sixth, consecutive singles by Gonzales, Matt Quibell and Ruaber set the stage for West's base- clearing double. With one out in the seventh, Moret- ti and Falzarano walked, were push- ed along by McGavisk's sacrifice bunt and scored on Qui bell's single. Dansville stranded two runners in the first extra inning but put it away in the ninth. McGavisk opened the frame with a triple but the next two hitters went down. Rauber walked and West followed with a single that plated both runners. Falzarano fan- ned the first Geneseo hitter in the bottom of the inning and the next flied to left. An error and walk put two aboard before the next hitter popped to second. Geneseo scored a pair in the se- cond on two hits and two in the fourth without a hit. The hosts tied the score with three in the seventh on a double and three singles. Falzarano struck out six and walked three in his route-going per- formance.
