but I’d been living in a rented property in the village for a number of years beforehand, and it was during that time that I really fell for the place,” says Neil. “It’s an extremely attractive and very traditional little village with a thriving community, and the fact that it’s well positioned for easy access into large towns such as Banbury, Daventry and Northampton makes it a very convenient place to live. In short, it’s a location that offers the best of everything.”

“In terms of the house itself, I’d say that I knew I wanted it the minute I set foot inside. I first viewed it on a wonderfully sunny day in June and the light was streaming into every room, so it immediately felt exceptionally bright and airy – which often isn’t the case with period cottages. It had been rented out for a number of years prior to me purchasing it and so it was in need of a fair amount of TLC, but over time my wife and I have made lots of changes that have enhanced the property no end. We added a Rayburn that also provides heating and hot water, the kitchen was updated, new double-glazed windows have been installed, we’ve laid beautiful wood flooring in both bedrooms and we’ve refreshed the décor countless times so the whole house is just lovely throughout. It’s a very warm and welcoming home and it really couldn’t have been more perfect for the two of us.”

“The house is set well back from the road and so when we’re out in the garden we enjoy a superb degree of privacy, and the outside space is another lovely feature of the property,” continues Neil. “My wife is a very keen gardener and she has put an awful lot of time and effort into creating a very beautiful, but at the same time very usable space. We have a good-size lawn that’s edged with pretty plants that create lots of colour, particularly during the spring and summer months, and we also have a number of quiet places to sit out, eat and relax. It’s a real retreat and I suppose the whole property is something of a hidden gem.”

“As I mentioned before, Eydon is a place where we’ve been able to enjoy the best of everything,” says Neil. “The village hall is a hive of activity and plays host to a number of clubs and societies, we have a cosy pub that serves excellent food just down the road, and of course we’re surrounded by glorious countryside so it’s a walker’s paradise. We also enjoy easy access to a number of busy towns, the motorway links are very good and we can drive to either Birmingham or Luton airport in just over an hour so it’s relatively easy to get just about anywhere.”

“My wife and I are planning a move abroad, which will be an exciting new chapter in our lives, but we’ll be sad to leave Old School Cottage,” says Neil. “The house, the garden and this superb village setting have combined to make this a very happy home.”*

The kitchen/diner is where we tend to spend a lot of our time, but the main living room is a part of the house that has a particularly warm and cosy atmosphere, especially when the fire is roaring away.”

Around ten years ago we had an outside office built and it enabled me to run a successful business from home.

It’s fully insulated and it not only has an electricity supply, but also network cabling so I have very good Internet connectivity. I’m retired now, but when I was working it was great to have such a short commute!”

Eydon is a very attractive and unspoilt Northamptonshire village, located just a short drive from the larger villages of Byfield and Woodford Halse that offer a wider range of local shopping facilities. The Royal Oak is a popular public house, serving good food on 5 nights a week to a high standard. There are many activities in and around the village also. Junior schooling can be found in the nearby larger villages of Woodford Halse, Byfield and Culworth. Senior schooling can be found in both Middleton Cheney and Daventry along with a good selection of excellent private options. The motorways are easily accessed, the M40 (J11) is just 8 miles down the A361 and the M1 (J16) is about 16 miles to the north in Daventry. There are more extensive shopping facilities found in both Banbury and Daventry. There are mainline train services at both Long Buckby and Banbury, meaning London is just over an hours commute. For those linked to the local car industries (or like to watch F1) Brackley is less than 12 miles away and Silverstone is under 15 miles and a 25 minute drive away.
