Possible sites for year six major design

    project

Local or well known to myself

Anglesey Holyhead Marina area... (context... existing

building left deserted, not much in the way of other

    built structures)

Plans for a 100m marina development at Holyhead can be

decided by Anglesey council after the Welsh government

said it did not need to get involved.

The plan was given outline permission in June butAnglesey officials sought advice from the Welsh

    government.

Objectors had wanted the plan considered by a minister

because they claim it will destroy Newry beach.

But the developers say it is an "exciting and ambitious"

scheme with 700 jobs and "significant benefits".

It includes a 500-berth marina, 326 homes, a hotel andbusiness premises.

The development is a joint venture between Stena Line and

    Conygar Investment Company.

The Proposal covers three distinct character areas:

Newry Beach and Green open space areas includingformal Gardens

    Porth y Felin

Soldiers Point and the Great Breakwater

The concept is to develop these important and distinctivecharacter areas to expand, enhance and rejuvenateHolyhead town in a sustainable manner by:

    Attracting more visitors to both Holyhead andAnglesey through enhancement of the area as a leisureand tourism destination;

    Regeneration of the area through continued investmentby the renovation and reuse of the listed buildingsand structures along the Waterfront coastline;

Improved public access, extension of the Promenade,

    enhanced public open space along Beach Road and thecreation of a new beach East of the new Breakwaterand Marina Facility;

Working in partnership with established localbusinesses and other tourist attractions such as theBreakwater Country Park to provide wider benefits.

The proposals seek to retain the existing house and itssetting, complemented by a New Visitor Centre, TouristInformation Centre and Maritime Museum set into the

    existing landscape.

The renovation of Soldiers Point House would includeits outbuildings and existing screen wall as a newlocation for the expanded maritime museum.

Creation of a Visitor Centre and Training Facilitiesfor diving/sailing activities.

Re-use of the former railway shed to the rear ofSoldiers Point as Maritime Workshops and Apprentice

Training Facilities. Overflow parking at the head of the Great Breakwater

for summer visitors and special events.

    Holyhead

Information Soldiers Point Hotel, also known as theOld Castle building, was built in 1848

as the residence of the Engineer in

    charge of the Government-

    sponsored alterations to Holyhead

harbour being carried out as part of

improvements to the mail route from

London to Dublin. John Hawkshaw succeeded

James Meadows Rendel in this post whenthe latter died in 1856.

    The grounds of this two-storey

    castellated Victorian mansion are bounded

by curtain walls with folly towers

one of which, looking out onto the

harbour, functioned as a pillbox during

    the Second World War.

Over the years, the house has been usedas a private residence as well as as a

hotel, and has been derelict for a number

of years. In September 2011 the property

was gutted by a fire; at the time it had

    apparently been occupied by homeless

    people.

The house is owned by Conygar Stenaa

partnership between Stena Line and theConygar Investment Companyand features

    in their ambitious waterfront

regeneration plans for the town. In the

proposals, which were unveiled in 2010,

the house would be renovated as a new,

    larger home for Holyheads Maritime

    Museum.

    Nerja Spain

San Joaqun Sugar MillThe San Joaquin Sugar Mill, located between Nerja and Maro on the old coast road, is

now derelict. The mill was built in 1884 by Francisco Cantarero and owned by the

Marquis de Tous. It closed down in 1911 and then, in 1930, was acquired by the Larios

sugar company and reopened. A distillery was also part of the complex.

There were also mills at Maro, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox. The nearby Eagle Aquaduct,

built to supply the factory, continues to be used by local farmers for irrigation.

The remains of a bridge and a roman road, which passed close to the Roman town of

Detunda (Maro), have been unearthed in the area.

Cities that have a good mix ofarchitecture new and old

    Copenhagen / kbenhavn

Danish attention to detail is absolutely stunning.

Besides the wonderful historic architecture, Copenhagen

is filled with contemporary architecture of the highest

quality. Remarkably, you rarely find the new clashing

with the old. More often than not, the contemporary

architecture in Copenhagen actually heightens the

experience of the historic buildings and streets.

    Amsterdam

umerous canals, Renaissance architecture, and bike

friendly culture, modern or contemporary architecture.

Amsterdam is best known for its luxurious canal houses

    and charming gabled facades

msterdam is known for the series of canals that encircle

in a horseshoe shape and crisscross each other throughout

the city even though it is below-sea-level. As such, the

residents have had to find ways of dealing with the water

and soft ground. Houses are built on sturdy pilings to

assure a solid foundation. Although you will see manycockeyed canal houses, some held up by huge logs, most

buildings have been where they are for centuries. Many

people are under the wrong impression that lots of old

canal houses in Amsterdam are leaning forwards or have

gone squinty over the years. Not so. They were mainly

built like that so that the gable was further out into

the street to make it easier to haul everything in via

    the hook and window.
