Everyone is Welcome

RENEWAL AND REDEVELOPMENT

Mount Olive became involved in the BC Synod’s Renewal & Redevelopment process in January

2014. We know that God is already ahead of us in our communities. We also know that we

need to develop new skills that will equip us to adapt to challenges that are facing today’s

Church.

Early last fall four Conversation Groups were held to give you an opportunity for discussion.

Many of the comments and suggestions that were made during these discussions dealt with

“MO Church” issues. This feedback seemed to fall into 11 distinct areas:

Changing Demographics of our Community Service to our

Community Fellowship Opportunities Care of our

Congregation

Property Worship Technology

Awareness of MO in the Community Young Families Youth

Children

Although many of the issues raised were not within the mandate of the Renewal &

Redevelopment process, the Guiding Team strongly felt it was important not to ignore them.

You had taken time to attend the Conversation Groups. You had given input on issues that you

felt were significant. It was important that there should be follow-up on these.

Your comments have been forwarded to Church Council. At its March Retreat, committee

chairs began the process of developing goals and activities for the coming year. They were

encouraged to attend to your comments, and address as many suggestions as was reasonable

in their planning. Committee goals will be finalized and shared with you next month.

As always, we are grateful for your support and prayer on our behalf.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY – Sunday School Teachers & Assistants Needed!

We will need the help of the congregation to keep our One Room Sunday School program up and running!

Teachers: During the past year we’ve been using Grow, Proclaim – Serve, a one room Sunday School program. The lesson plans are well prepared and provide pretty much everything needed for a user-friendly teaching experience.

Teacher’s Assistants: Involves NO teaching or preparation .... just some extra hands to help with the activities, and be the 2nd adult in the room, as required under the Policy to Protect Children, Youth and Other Vulnerable People in the ELCIC.

Please contact Gwen McNabb for further information - [email protected] or 604-536-8527

ALTAR GUILD COORDINATOR

Looking for someone (a Volunteer – Female or Male) to be the Altar Guild

Coordinator - our present individual (Gloria) wishes to retire in the Fall. For

more details as to the duties, etc. contact a member of the Worship Committee

or the Church Office. Training for this position will be provided. Please consider

this opportunity. Thank you.

Parishioner of the Month

Elmer Krushel

Most Sundays you will find Elmer in the

choir or the front middle section of the

church. That mustache, twinkling eyes and

genuine smile give him away. Elmer was

born in a teacherage where his Dad was the

teacher in Southern Manitoba near

Rosenfeld. In fact, his Dad was his teacher

throughout his elementary years of school.

The family, including Elmer’s one brother,

attended the Lutheran Church in Rosenfeld.

His first year high school was at Plum

Coulee, and the rest at Winkler, Manitoba.

After graduation, Elmer took a six weeks

teacher training course and taught on

permit for one year near the town of

Winkler. After that he attended Normal

School (teacher training) for one year in

Winnipeg. He taught for three years in

Southern Manitoba, Grades one to three,

then grades one to seven in a one room

school. He decided to change careers and

attended the University of Manitoba for five

years, graduating with a Bachelor of Science

and a Masters of Science.

While at university, he attended the

Lutheran Student Movement on campus

and met his wife to be, Diana. They were

married July 19, 1960 after Elmer

graduated.

Elmer began his new career in Ralston,

Alberta, near Medicine Hat, in Chemical

Research. He and Diana lived there one year

before returning to Winnipeg where Elmer

taught Chemistry and Sciences at Silver

Heights Collegiate-High School for one year.

Then he began a new job at Deer Lodge

Hospital in Winnipeg as a chemist. He

remained in this position from 1962-2000.

While working here, his boss suggested the

Elmer go back to University and pursue PhD

studies. He was able to work and study part

time for the next seven years before

achieving his Ph D in chemical Research,

graduating in 1969. He continued working

at Deer Lodge until the hospital was sold in

1983 and became a private business. Elmer

then went to Misericordia General Hospital

and became a Clinical Biochemist.

During this time Elmer and Diana had three

sons and attended St. Marks Lutheran

Church in Winnipeg, where the children

were baptized and confirmed. Diana stayed

at home until the third son started school,

and then pursued her career as Interior

Decorator, being employed by Sears.

Their oldest son, Eric, after working for four

years in his profession as lawyer, went to

the Seminary and became a Lutheran Pastor

in Saskatoon, Sask. He is now Pastor of

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in

Coquitlam. Second son, Brian was first to

become a Pastor, and accepted his first call

to Comox, B.C. He now lives in Kamloops

and has two churches, Clearwater and

Barriere, which are a combination of

Lutheran, Anglican and United

Congregations. Youngest son, Keith studied

music and for a number of years had his

own Saxophone Group. Now he is a band

teacher in Calgary.

In 2000, both Diana and Elmer retired. The

year before, they had bought a lot in South

Surrey and had their house custom built,

moving in January, 2000.

They began attending Mount Olive

immediately after their move. At Mount

Olive they quickly made friends, Elmer with

the Wednesday golf group, and Diana with

the ladies’ groups. Their social life bloomed

at Mount Olive and they were very happy

here. Unfortunately, Dianna was diagnosed

with cancer, suffered for three years,

before succumbing to it January 4, 2010.

Elmer and Diana had been planning their

fiftieth wedding anniversary for July 9,

2010, and Elmer went ahead with the

celebration on their special day.

Now Elmer is chairman of the Music and

Worship Committee, sings in the choir and

changes the candles each week. His

hobbies, besides golf, include playing the

accordion, enjoying his collection of Ernest

Thompson Seton nature books, collecting

Eskimo carvings, and collecting clocks of

which he has twenty-two, including three

grand father clocks. He does not have all the

clocks running at once, for obvious reasons!

He is grateful that the people of Mount

Olive made them feel so welcome after

their move to South Surrey. “It’s a great

church”.
