Olive cultivation is one of thelargest and most important Greekagricultural sectors, with nationalannual olive oil production about

400.000 t.

Olive pomace oil potential isestimated based on the assumptionthat olive pomace oil is production

is about 8% of the olive oilproduction (32.000tn)

The majority of the olive oil extraction mills use the three-phaseextraction technology system(Aprox. 3,2% uses the traditional extraction system, 2,4% uses the 2-phase

system & 94.4% uses the 3-phase system).

In the Island of Crete, exist ten (10) operational pomace oil refineries andthe overall processed virgin pomace amount is estimated at 200.000tnannually with small fluctuations from season to season.

From this quantity,100.000tn depleted pomaceis produced of which aprox.

50% is being consumed inthe refineries as fuel and therest is sold to the localmarket at a relatively lowprice (50 /t).

By comparing energy cost forheating, olive pomace has asignificant advantage over diesel as

the heat content per Euro is

15.454 kcal/ for heating diesel(market price 0,60 /L) and

81.020 kcal/ for olive pomace.

In Greece at old times pulp was used as animal feed and for this reasonpomace oil refineries were separating the pit from the pulp after the pomaceoil extraction. Nowadays pulp which isnt used as feed, is burned with the pit.

In Spain the separation of pit from pulp is taking place after the olive oilextraction this is due to the fact they use decanters which in Greece areconsidered as expensive for their small production in comparison with Spain.

The industry sells besides olive oil,pomace oil, olive soaps and depletedpomace

The refineries in the island of Crete produce annually ~100.000tndepleted pomace.
