Words can be powerful things. Often, however, I think that we use words without thinking about what they really mean. For example, in today’s gospel we hear the story of the Transfiguration. We hear how Jesus, with James, John, and Peter, go up a high mountain and he is transfigured in their sight. Moses and Elijah appear with him, and the voice of God is heard coming from the clouds. In the gospel of Mark we are told that as they are coming down the mountain after experiencing this powerful event, Jesus tells them not to tell anyone what they have seen until, “the Son of Man is risen from the dead”. The disciples begin to discuss what rising from the dead means. Resurrection is a word that is vital to our faith; do we ever stop to think what that word means?

A word that we hear a great deal during Lent is the word “repent”. When you received your ashes, chances are the minister said, “Repent and believe in the Gospel”. Have I ever stopped to ask myself what it means to repent? Repent comes from the Greek word Metenoia. Metenoia means several things, all of them instructive. It means to turn away from. Hence, we are asked to turn away from our sins. Metenoia also means to change our mind. Another way to put it is to say that we are asked to change the way we think, the very way that we see the world. I believe that, during this holy season of Lent, we should hear the word “Repent”, try to understand what it means for us, and strive to put

it into effect in our lives.

During Lent it is customary for Catholics to do something. Many people give things up; others will add something into their daily lives. The Church has always stressed utilizing the spiritual tools of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. The reason why is that they are meant to be tools that help us to truly repent. The things we give up, or the things that we do, during Lent are meant to help us to repent. They are meant to help us to turn away from some things that get in the way, and to turn back to a closer relationship with God. They are meant to help us to change our minds, to help us to see the world in a new way. When we have done so, when we have turned away from sins and turned back to God; when we have changed the way we see the world and the things of the world; when we have truly repented, then we can begin to try and understand what “Rising from the dead” means.

God Bless,

Fr. Jack

How can we help our children prepare for the vocation they are called to?

The role of family in the development of vocations (by Cardinal Sean O’Malley)

For most young Catholics the call is going to be to married life. We must do all we can to help prepare them for that vocation. We can also be certain that some of our young people are being called by God to lives of special service in the Church, to

priesthood, permanent diaconate and religious life. It is particularly challenging to present the commitment of consecrated life and priestly ministry in the context of contemporary culture. Without support, these vocations will go unheeded. Parents

can do so much by praying with their children and teaching them to seek God’s will in their lives through vocational discernment. Parents need to have a sense of vocation and mission themselves to pass on to their children. Parents receive

their children from God and must be willing to give them back to God for service of his people. In faith, parents need to understand that their children’s true happiness depends on a generous response to God’s call and that God is never outdone in

generosity and love.

All Confirmation paperwork has been submitted to Father Jack for review. If you still have any outstanding forms, please contact Mrs. Davies this week. Also refer to your email from Mrs. Davies for your assigned Confirmation date.

The next Teen Mass will be on Sunday, March 8 at 5 pm at St. Joseph Parish. All Confirmation Prep students are asked to attend. All parishioners are welcome!

Confirmation Prep II classes will resume on Sunday, March 8 at 6 pm at Our La-dy’s Hall at St. Joseph Parish. If you have missed more than one class please contact Mrs. Davies in the Faith Formation Office ASAP for your assignment.

CRUSADERS- YOUTH MINISTRY Every Monday night at 6pm we gather as a community for Pizza, People and Prayer. A chance to pray with and for one another, while deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. A typical Monday night is about teens gathering together in prayer and talking about their week. The setting is informal and relaxed. Following prayer, there is plenty of time to socialize, make new friends and of course...EAT PIZZA!

There will be a Family Mass on Sunday, March 29 at 10:30 am. Grade 5 and 6 students will be assisting with the Mass. Please contact Mrs. Davies if your child would like to volunteer for a role. We also need a family to setup the Hall for coffee and donuts that day.

This month’s Family Faith topic focused on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy.

Families with students in Grades 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 should work on Lessons 10 and 11 in their ‘A Family of Faith’ books.

Families with students in Grade 2 should work on Lessons 3 and 4 in the blue First Eucharist folder.

Families with students in Grades 7 and 8 should complete the Visions Gospel Weeklies for the additional lessons in March.
