The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, or OLLI, offers non-credit educational programs specifically developed for adults who are ages 50 and older; university connection and university support; robust volunteer leadership and sound organizational structure; and a diverse repertoire of intellectually stimulating courses.

OLLI at LSU is now a program of LSU Digital & Continuing Education. This new university division combines the Continuing Education programs with LSU Online credit degree programs, strengthening LSU’s focus on engagement with off-campus and lifelong learners.

We invite anyone who is interested to become an OLLI at LSU member. Membership entitles you to register in as many courses, field trips, or special events as you like. Come learn with us!

Our mission is to foster lifelong learning and individual growth for learners ages 50 and over by creating intellectually stimulating learning opportunities that enrich lives.

MEMBERSHIP OLLI at LSU is open to anyone who meets its two requirements:

Competitive Croquet for Fun Croquet is that game with mallets, balls, & stakes that you probably played in your back yard as a kid. It is not just a child’s game but has been a competitive & social adult game for more than 150 years. There are about 4,000 members of the U.S. Croquet Association in about 300 clubs, who hold many tournaments each year. This class will be a broad introduction to this world. Croquet does not require great strength or agility, and men & women, young & old, can compete on an equal footing. If you have a tennis elbow or a golfer’s back or a football knee, then croquet is for you! The only requirement is a willingness to get out into the sunshine & meet & talk with other people while hitting balls around on a lawn. All equipment for the class will be provided.

Louis L’Amour’s Western & Detective Stories Louis L’Amour, noted for his western stories, also wrote detective stories and fiction in other genres. This course will center on his Western and detective short stories that are published in Law of the Desert Born and The Hills of Homicide. We will examine his plots, characters, settings and themes. His plots are taut and exciting, and his settings are authentically researched and well-described. Growing up in North Dakota, he heard tales about the old West from his family and others. Interestingly enough, L’Amour’s writing career began with the publication of a book of his verse, and poetry continued to add depth and beauty to his fiction. He was awarded many prestigious writing awards: In 1981 he was presented the Western Writers of America Golden Saddleman Award for contributions to the Western genre; in 1982 Congress voted him the National Gold Medal; and in 1984 he was awarded the Medal of Freedom.

Note: This course is six weeks long but has two skip dates.

Explained! The Human Body “Explained! The Human Body” is a 6 week program that delves into oft pondered questions about the functions (and dysfunctions) of the human body. Week 1 will answer “Why Do I Hurt?” - a deep dive into understanding our pain experience and how we can use the plasticity of the central nervous system to change our pain experience. Week 2 will piggy back off of week 1 as we answer “Why Am I Stressed?” and understand that we are hard-wired to respond to stressors as we would when fighting or fleeing a saber toothed tiger (even though a response of that magnitude is rarely necessary). Week 3 will cover “What is Inflammation?” and discuss how an otherwise necessary and normal part our healing process can go awry and wreak havoc on our body. Week 4 will introduce “Fascia - Have We Finally Found The Missing Link?” to show how this often forgotten organ system is the great connector and the answer to a lot of our health questions. Finally, in week 5-6, we will discover “The Telomere Effect” and review how insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress are fast tracking us into disease and death.

Faces of Racism Can racism be eradicated? With a rise in domestic terrorism fueled by the divisiveness of racism, the question becomes, “Is the eradication of racism possible?” Racism has been a part of the United States since inception. It is embedded in every institution and continues to perpetuate hatred, oppression and death. Children must be taught to be racist, and unfortunately, they are. Racism has become a way of life, accepted and affirmed, directly and indirectly, with and without permission. Faces of Racism identifies seven ways that racism is sustained: distortion, omission, stereotype, superiority, inferiority, hatred and denial. These seven ways will be explained with current examples, laws and consequences. Solutions and actions are offered for eradication. Participant interaction with free discussions is suggested for understanding the crisis. Without change racism will forever divide people, the country, and the world. Faces offers solutions for the future. Purchase your own text: Faces of Racism: A Case of Genocide by Dr. Freya A. Rivers and Ms. Angela Hawkings-Rivers

From there we will study the Jewish understanding of God as YHWH the greatest of all the gods, to eventually, the only God; and culminate with the Christian perception of Jesus as the Son of God. Homeostasis, Regulation of Normal Physiology in the Human Body, Part II The human body consists of 100 trillion cells, which are embedded in the extracellular fluid (blood, lymph, and interstitial fluid). The maintainence of constant conditions in the extracellular fluid by active physiological processes known as homeostasis assures that all of our cells live in an incubator. The organization of cells into four primary tissues, organs, and 11 organ systems is responible for the maintainence of homeostasis and normal physiology. We will focus on homeostasis in the circulatory system, respiratory system, nervous sytem, endocrine system, sensory receptors, and the reproductive system.

Growing up in North

Dakota, he heard tales about the old West from his family and others. Medieval Ireland: A History of Invasions In this course we will be exploring the history of Ireland from its ancient past up to the 1500s. Having been ignored and unconquered by the Romans, Ireland maintained its ancient pagan traditions, religion, and culture until the efforts of St. Patrick in the 5th century and the Viking invasions in the 9th century. We will look at the ways Christianity and the Vikings effected the island, in addition to exploring the political and social outcomes of the English invasions of the 12th century which forever altered the landscape and people of Ireland. We will use primary sources, maps, and images to better understand how individual rulers and clans fought to maintain independence under the English yoke.

Modern Art Modern art has its roots in the 1860’s with a movement away from narrative art, and in a lot of experimentation with techniques and ways of seeing that led in the direction of abstraction. These efforts laid the foundation for more recent developments now variously described as “contemporary art” or “post-modern” art. We will start with the eye-opening ideas of the Impressionists, the post-impressionists such as Van Gogh, Cezanne, the Cubists, Surrealists, etc. We will explore the ideas behind the various movements and see what sense we can make of what we encounter in the galleries and museums of today.

The Musicals of Cole Porter & Irving Berlin Cole Porter and Irving Berlin...they were alike in their prolific output and in the high ratio of hits they produced. And, at a time when most songwriters worked with lyricists who put words to their music, Porter and Berlin wrote both words and music for their compositions. Berlin wrote seventeen complete scores for Broadway musicals and revues, and contributed material to six more. Porter wrote over 30 stage and film musicals. His best work set standards of sophistication and wit seldom matched in the popular musical theater. Join us as we explore the lives and works of these two giants of Broadway whose careers spanned half a century.

Who Knew? A Tour of Historic Baton Rouge The first class will consist of a PowerPoint presentation on the Historic District of Baton Rouge and the places we will visit during the next five classes. Admission fees to 2 locations are listed in the description of the class.

During the class, we will visit the home of Louisiana’s First Family. The beautiful Mansion built in 1963 by Governor Jimmy Davis and renovated by Governor Mike Foster is always evolving. We will meet the charming First Lady, Donna Edwards, if she is available that day. (No admission, however the Governor’s Christmas ornaments are available for purchase). Another location will be the memorial to Huey Long, the new State Capitol, tallest in the country. After a brief tour of the magnificent interior, an elevator ride to the 27th floor observation deck will give us a great view of the mighty Mississippi and Baton Rouge (No admission fee and no gift shop). Another location takes us to the Capital Park Museum, which tells the exciting story of Louisiana’s history, unique culture and economic development. From Mardi Gras celebrations to great Cajun music, we embark on an adventure, which could only take place in the Bayou State (Admission $5.00, no gift shop). Another historic spot will take us to one of the

oldest, most historic and beautiful buildings in Baton Rouge, the Old State Capitol. It was built in 1847 after Baton Rouge was made Capitol of Louisiana. After a devastating fire, war, and neglect, it has stood as a testament to the resilience of Louisiana’s people. (There is no admission fee, however, there is a $3 fee for the media event on the history of the building. There is also a great gift shop). No class would be complete without visit to the “Louisiana’s White House” or Huey Long’s Governor’s Mansion. Built in 1930, nine governors lived in the Mansion before the new one was built in 1963. The old mansion has been rescued from neglect by the Foundation for Historical Louisiana and tells the story of days long ago and the people who lived there. There is a fee of $8 and no gift shop.

Who Knew Part II? A Tour of Worship Centers in Baton Rouge This course is designed for those who are interested in the beliefs of people who may be different and/or visiting historic churches in Baton Rouge. We will car pool to the various worship centers to learn about the religious beliefs.

One of our locations will be the Cathedral in the Dioceses of Baton Rouge, St. Joseph’s. It was established as a cathedral in 1961 by Pope John XXIII, when the Baton Rouge population became large enough to create a diocese separate from New Orleans. The Gothic church was renovated in the 1960’s to conform to the new church guidelines of Vatican II.

St James Episcopal Church is the only church still located on 4th Street, which was formerly known as Church Street, as it was the home of 4 of Baton Rouge’s main churches. The other 3 have since moved to new locations. St James was established by a group of ladies led by the wife of the 12th president, Zachary Taylor.

We will visit the Buddhist Meditation Center which holds meditation services on Friday nights in English. Another house of worship will be one of Baton Rouge’s synagogues. The last two location is to be determined depending on renovations and visiting hours. I am looking at a mosque, Hindu Center and the Mormon Temple. It should be an interesting journey into the different beliefs of our neighbors in Baton Rouge.

Why We Sleep: A Look at the Latest Research Why are we humans forced to sleep every day? Is it wasted time? Are you an early bird or a night owl? Do you have insomnia? Do other animals sleep? Why is coffee so loved? Do we actually dream, and if so, why, what purpose can they have? When was the last time you awoke refreshed? Does sleep really help us learn? What are the vastly different types of sleep we all experience each night? These are some of the fascinating questions I will explore in the four sessions: 1) What is sleep and what controls your personal sleepy

times, 2) The two types of sleep and what they do for us including dreams, 3) The vast benefits of sleep for our minds and bodies, 4) Problems with sleep insomnia, sleep walking, sleeping pills, narcolepsy and stuff like that. It will be entertainling and not put you to sleep!
