Preparation time spent by presenters, developers, facilitators, tech support and other personnel behind the scenes to bring it altogether? Immeasurable and priceless! Thank you to everyone who has given so generously of their time and talents contributing to the success of OLLI at UCI. Lee Winocur Field has joined the OLLI board as Director of Assessment & Planning. Her background includes Leadership Chair for the California AAUW (American Association of University Women) Board responsible for helping branches across the state with strategic planning, mission identification, and developing board training materials. Lee will be an asset to the leadership of OLLI and we welcome her. If you hesitated to volunteer to help in locating a new OLLI classroom because others, with more experi-ence would be signing up to help, I can assure you that that did not happen. If you want better facilities for our wonderful courses, contact me: [email protected] Enjoy our fall course lineup, Pam McGovern President

(These minutes are not final until approved at the October 17, 2012, Board Meeting.)

ATTENDING: Pam McGovern, , Leah Jordan, Jessie Tromberg, Julie Hume, Karen McKenzie, Pat Linehan, Joanne Burch, and Tanya Zabalegui. GUEST: Lee Winocur Field expressed her inter-est in a leadership role in OLLI, explaining her Ph.D. in education may be an asset. President Pam McGovern called the OLLI Board of Directors’ meeting to order at 1:35 PM. A MOTION to accept the minutes as submitted was approved. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Pam reiterated that a pressing goal is to find better, larger facilities, but the long term goal is to find a permanent venue. Parking is an issue in some of the solutions. FINANCIAL REPORT: Pam reported for Treasurer Sherri Nussbaum a year-to-date income of $91,549 for a budget $207,000, but that is not an issue because the July Foundation report is not included. We have, however, used $1700 of a $2000 budget for outside facility rental. At the date of the report, OLLI’s yearly membership has exceeded last year’s by 7 at 537, but is behind in semester memberships. A MOTION was approved to accept the August finance reports. ADMINISTRATION REPORT: Pat Linehan, VP Administration, explained that Membership cards are available at the office and displayed at each new class session for three/four weeks. The office has cards available for late-enrolling members. She also asked the Board members to contact her with sug-gestions for changes in the working drafts of their job descriptions. PROGRAM REPORT: VP Programs, Jessie Tromberg, reported that September has been a busy month with planning new courses and re-scheduling issues. At Travel Talk October 13, Jan Elbaum will report on a Byzantine Monastery in Dunlap, Ca. “Friday at Four” is scheduled for October 19 in the UClub Library, with a No-Host Bar at $4, free snacks, and possibly a piano player. In addition, Dec. 6 has been established as OLLI DAY on campus. A room in Humanities/Gateway is reserved under the sponsorship of Dr. Wendy Goldberg, Social Ecology. After some discussion of various program and class issues, the Board decided that the office will send reminder-enrollment forms to those who attend a class without currently enrolling, that presenters should receive catalogues once the developer gives the appro-priate address to the office, and that giving presenters a formal voucher for a class of their choice is a way of honoring their service. These last two topics will be presented at the next CCG meeting. MEMBER SERVICES: Jan Elbaum, VP of Member Services, was absent, so the procedures for the New Member Coffee will be discussed in New Business. COMMUNICATIONS: Director Joanne Burch reported that the 30 second Public Service Announce-ment will be sent out before Spring Semester. She has finished Board bios, has crafted an ad for OLLI

Outlook requesting tech savvy volunteers, and is preparing for a 4-part series in OLLI Outlook about each curriculum committee. Finally, she suggests a presence on Facebook, a process on which Barb has been working with advice from Extension. VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT: Director Leah Jordan has created a new member list and noted the need for an accurate process at time of registration. The Calendar Scheduler for the Fall will be Mike McGovern who is currently learning the details of the task. At this time forty-six Spring 2013 courses

OLLI BOARD MINUTES (CONT.)

have been scheduled. October is the deadline month, and several new members have offered to act as fa-cilitators for this coming semester. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS/SPECIAL PROJECTS: Director Julie Hume reported that the first lecture of the Fall Forum is closed and that four lectures are already scheduled for the Winter Forum. She reminded the Board that the large room at Oasis is available only Friday afternoons. The 15th Anniversary celebration is covered under Old Business. OFFICE UPDATE: Karen McKenzie announced that by the morning 538 members registered so far this year, with more registering almost daily. The wireless connection is running well, and members can get the password from the office. The new microphone has also received praise as has the additional air conditioning unit which functions very well. Ginny Freeman, Frederick and Ruth Onken’s daughter, vis-ited the classroom, was most enthusiastic. UCI LIAISON: Tanya Zabalegui confirmed that OLLI DAY on campus will be held in a room in Hu-manities/Gateway. She has also arranged a meeting to discuss issues of housing OLLI with Dean Mat-kin, Bob Rude, Pam, Julie and herself. She explained that classes can be held on campus without charge if the topic is in the professor’s department or school. Extension can also help OLLI improve its use of Facebook .In addition she reported a plan to work with Open Courseworks for the UClub Forum with the agreement of the speaker and hopes that some courses may be filmed in the future. Finally, she explained that an e-blast holiday greeting from OLLI can be sent through marketing. OLD BUSINESS: Julie reported that the 15th Anniversary Celebration is planned for the gazebo and lawn at the UClub for an afternoon in May (possibly the 15th). Its purpose is to honor charter members, presenters, major course developers, staff, Board members over the years, possibly with a memory book that might incorporate personal ads along with the names of honorees. The anniversary is to be simple, but fun with food, no-host bar, games, and entertainment. The estimated fee is possibly $15 with a limited number of invited guests. Tanya plans to investigate finding some appropriate sponsors to mitigate costs. Finally, the business of the annual meeting may be dealt with via e-mail so the fee for the celebration will not interfere. NEW BUSINESS: Plans for the New Member Coffee Sept. 21 were discussed and finalized. Board members will attend. The meeting was adjourned at 2:40 pm. Submitted by Pat Linehan for Nila Kyser, Secretary (The next Board meeting will be October 17, 2012, at 1:30 in Research Park.)

MOVIE TALK

BRANDED

Set some time in the near future, with a cast and crew of what seems like thou-sands, this weirdly funny, absurdist film puts Russian film makers squarely back on the international film scene. Put the blame on, not Mame, but on Lenin and agit prop. These are the roots of modern manipulative advertising, brain washing through Branding. What hap-pens when companies follow Mad Men advice and the world desires nothing but fast food? Throw in a little mad cow disease, ancient rituals, revenge, love, a voice-over narrator to guide you through plot lines and you have an entertaining time at the movies. It was shot in Russia and Bulgaria with a sci-fi look, and is filled with original music played by first rate Moscow Symphony musicians. Watch the credits at the end, you’ll see a lot of great Soviet advertising Posters.

BOOK REVIEW Memory is the guardian of all things, and we are the guardians of that memory. No, this is not a book on how to improve your capacity for memory, that proc-ess we all seek. It is, however, a charming anecdotal/history lesson on how we moved from Neanderthal to Modern Man - indeed an "epic story of human memory." Michael S. Malone, the author, has thought about this for many years from Sili-con Valley to the New York Times, to the Wall Street Journal to Forbes to his 2009 book, THE FUTURE ARRIVED YESTERDAY.

This latest, THE GUARDIAN OF ALL THINGS, is an entertaining read, even if it does warn us that in spite of our digitized computers, all could go dark. “We need,” he says, “to find more enduring ways to preserve our memories.”
