ACADEMY OF OUR LADY OF PEACE

Our Mission StatementThe Academy of Our Lady of Peace is a Catholic, liberal arts oriented, college preparatory secondary school dedicated to the education of young women. As a Catholic school, it is committed to helping its students become active participants in building Christ’s kingdom of justice, love and peace. As a school rooted in the values of the Sisters of St. Joseph, it promotes the cultivation of “gentleness, peace and joy” as we respond to the needs of the “dear neighbor” both in our midst and in our human community. Through its college preparatory program, its mission is to empower its students to become knowledgeable in those skills needed to achieve success in post-secondary studies, and to make informed and values-driven decisions in the context of today’s world. As a result of these endeavors, and working with parents as our educational partners providing a family context of faith-in-action, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace strives to graduate responsible women educated to the needs of society.

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) is a Catholic, college preparatory secondary school dedicated to the education of young women. For more than 132 years, OLP academic tenets have remained grounded in the spirit of excellence and innovation characterizing the founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. OLP’s rigorous curriculum reflects a tradition of self-improvement and empowerment and embraces 21st Century readiness for

the future. The result of these endeavors – combined with parents as the educational partners – provides a context of faith-in-action family partnership.

Through academic, social and spiritual learning experiences, OLP strives to develop women who will act as changemakers in our global society, committed in their dedication to serve, without distinction, the “dear neighbor.”

Our Strategic Planning Process

For more than 130 years OLP has educated young

women to excel in college and beyond, grounded

in the Catholic faith and exemplifying the qualities

of the CSJ tradition. Significant changes in the

world, in the San Diego community, and at OLP

itself, prompted the development of a strategic

planning process to collectively study the school’s

history, examine its current status, identify its

strengths and opportunities for growth, and create

guideposts for achieving its full potential.

For a six-month time span between summer and

winter of 2014 to 2015, the OLP community was

engaged in a strategic planning process – virtually

all stakeholders were invited to participate. Five

compelling strategic priorities emerged through

the guidance of the Strategic Planning Task

Force, school leadership, Board of Directors and

Netzel Grigsby Associates Inc., strategic planning

consultants.

The purpose of this Strategic Plan is to provide the

Academy of Our Lady of Peace with a road map for

its development over the next three to five years.

STRATEGIC PRIORITY

Form Hearts and Minds in the Catholic Tradition with the Charism of OLP’s CSJ FoundersRationale Statement: OLP has been guided by Catholic values and the CSJ tradition for more than 130 years. In today’s complex and constantly changing world, it continues to be of quintessential importance to weave these values and traditions into every aspect of OLP.

GoalIn the spirit of the CSJ founders, OLP will embrace the charism of unity, reconciliation, gentleness, peace, and joy to empower and facilitate the growth of each member of the OLP community’s relationship with Jesus Christ; in turn, all will solidify their dedication to serve, without distinction, the “dear neighbor.”

Objectives• Provide formative learning experiences, across curricular disciplines, to

allow students to encounter and grow in their knowledge of Christ.

• Increase opportunities for student faith formation through liturgical celebrations, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, retreats, and service immersions.

• Continue to provide ongoing opportunities to deepen the collective understanding of the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as is lived throughout all aspects of the OLP school experience.

• Provide ongoing support and opportunities for faculty and staff faith formation through regular prayer, retreats, and participation in national Catholic conferences.

7

Pursue, Achieve, and Preserve Academic ExcellenceRationale Statement: OLP is known for its academic rigor and excellence in college preparation. Poised to build on this reputation, OLP is committed to taking transformative steps to lead the way as a Catholic, single-gender college preparatory school. OLP’s faculty and students act in service to humanity, excel intellectually, and value growing in their understanding of God, creation, themselves, and the world.

GoalIncorporate innovative educational and research-based practices throughout the curriculum to meet the demands of the 21st century and ensure the success of graduates in post-secondary education.

Objectives• Provide innovative, research-based best practices in teaching, supported by

ongoing access to professional development for all faculty and staff in their fields of

study.

• Evaluate and augment current educational course offerings to ensure alignment in

scope and sequence with university requirements. Ensure curriculum fulfills 21st

century teaching and learning pedagogical practices.

• Continue to develop teaching methodologies in support of all students achieving

academic success, especially those students with learning differences.

• Continue to investigate additional strategies for supporting parents and students in

the collegiate process; leverage alumnae success in mentoring current students.

10

Grow and Sustain Valuable ResourcesRationale Statement: As the oldest high school in San Diego, OLP’s commitment to educating young women—cultivating the change makers of tomorrow—necessitates an ongoing consideration of the global, technological, and environmental demands of the 21st century. In order to ensure the vitality of OLP’s mission and values, a commitment to the ongoing stewardship of human, physical, and financial resources is required.

GoalEnsure OLP’s long-term financial stability, growth, and sustainability through sound fiscal policies and a wide variety of funding sources. Grow the fundraising program until all resources are developed to their fullest potential.

Objectives• Develop and implement a five-year strategic Financial Plan to serve as

a long-range planning tool.

• Develop a shared sense of fiscal responsibility among all stakeholders,

facilitated through increased financial literacy and stewardship, a

spirit of transparency, and clear communications.

• Grow the endowment and expand annual sources of revenue through

the development of major gifts and increased constituent annual

giving; planned gifts; and corporate and foundation philanthropy.

Engage and Serve the Community as Socially Responsible Leaders Rationale Statement: Catholic social teaching and the CSJ charism of the cultivation of “excellence tempered by gentleness, peace, and joy” are the guiding principles for all internal and external relationships. OLP is called to be in service to the “dear neighbor” and to seek out new opportunities while continuing to foster ongoing partnerships in the broader community.

GoalDistinguish OLP as a high school in which ethics, service, and justice are key elements of the student experience. Maximize opportunities for local, regional, national, and global partnerships that support the mission.

Objectives• Develop a shared sense of fiscal responsibility among all stakeholders, which

requires financial literacy and stewardship facilitated through a spirit of transparency and clear communications.

• Develop and communicate the OLP brand as a valuable resource, leveraging OLP’s unique role as the only all girls’ Catholic high school in the region through the ongoing partnership with support schools.

• Through local partnerships, continue to establish OLP as a leading resource and center of innovative activity for women in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

• Strengthen alumnae relations and include alumnae as a resource to enhance

the school community.

Modernize the OLP Campus and FacilitiesRationale Statement: In order to fulfill the mission and provide access to all young women, while preserving the historical architecture, OLP must continue to focus on providing the necessary improvements in facilities with specific attention to accessibility, technology, and safety.

GoalDevelop a realistic implementation plan of the board-approved Campus Master Site Plan to meet the needs of the students, families, and OLP community today and in the future.

Objectives• Establish understanding and support for Master Plan

implementation through a strategized, multi-faceted outreach and

communication plan.

• Implement a capital and endowment campaign feasibility study to

assess the school’s readiness for implementation.

• Develop, implement, and monitor a technology plan to provide for

continuous assessment and evaluation of the use of technology,

including long-term planning projections for infrastructure.

• Develop a facilities plan, in support of the holistic Master Site Plan,

that provides incremental steps to begin meeting the most pressing

campus needs.

In July of 2013, OLP engaged in a partnership with

Lake|Flato Architects, to support the school in the

development of a Master Site Plan. The project engaged

parents, students, faculty, staff, under the direction of the

Board of Directors to assess current and future campus

needs. The goal for the Master Plan was to create a

campus for the next generation of OLP students while

actively preserving the historical architecture.

After a six month intensive planning process, the Board of

Directors approved the plan in May 2014. The Master Site plan

will provide OLP with a comprehensive long-term strategy as

we look to support the existing facilities, and plan for the new

20,000-square-foot building.

Throughout the Master Planning Process, several themes emerged, which will continue to be the focus of work for the future:

• Expand Science Program

• Increase Classroom Space

• Add Flexibility and Accessibility

• Expand Arts Program

• Create a Learning Center

• Increase connectivity

• Activate North Campus

• Provide Food Service

• Create Community Spaces

During the Summer of 2014, the school

embarked on the first phases of the City Use

Permit (CUP), memorializing the approved

permit, through the construction of a 104

stall, two-story parking structure. The St.

Catherine’s Parking Structure, which goes

subterranean for the lower level would meet

both the CUP requirements, as well as the

real need for on-site parking for students,

faculty, staff and visitors.

In addition to the Parking Structure,

the school also completed the internal

renovations to the 8,800-square-foot

original 1915 St. Catherine’s Hall building.

Necessary improvements allowed for 8 new

offices for counselors, registrar, campus

ministry, and retreats. In addition, a large

space in the center of the second floor

was set-aside for a student learning

commons and learning lab. Downstairs

now accommodates the Pilot Café, Spirit

Store, and Alumnae Parlor, along with

the new upgraded kitchen to meet on

campus and special event dinning needs.

The multi-phased Master Site plan

envisions St. Joseph’s Hall becoming a

premier STEM facility with engineering

lab space on the ground level. The

current theater will be relocated to

the new Performing Arts and Library

building, thus activating 6,000 square

feet of learning space in the heart of the

campus. This facility will serve as the

bridge between the STEM classrooms

and the general studies in Aquinas Hall.

This renovation will bring additional

classrooms, break-out rooms, and a

state-of-the-art TV production studio.

The new 20,000-square-foot building will

accommodate dance, music, choral and

drama classes in addition to the theater,

and library learning commons. Visual and

digital arts will then be able to maximize

St. Cecilia’s Hall.

As OLP moves forward with a preliminary

focus on adaptive reuse of existing

facilities, this Master Plan will offer the

necessary guidance for the Board of

Directors and Head of School to invest in

the infrastructure to serve young women

for the next 100 years.
