seek, share, rejoice - pastor's reflection

Father Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

Among the compelling Eucharistic themes proclaimed in today’s readings is the notion of “participation” as found in Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Good stewards are part of a Eucharistic family: loving, welcoming, serving.

An important part of living as a steward comes about in the many ways we can participate in the life of the Church,

No matter how much time we have to give, no matter what our skills or interests, no matter what our level of commitment, there is a way to partici-pate as a good steward to enrich our lives and the lives of others to build up the Body of Christ.

How do you participate in the life of your parish?

©ICSC 2017

Dear Parishioners,

“Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.”

In the fi rst few weeks after Pentecost, we have several special feasts that invite us to refl ect more deeply on some of our cornerstone beliefs as Catholics. Last week we refl ected on the Trinity and this week we cel-ebrate, the Feast of Corpus Christi, The Body and Blood of Christ.

The passage I quoted is from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians which will be proclaimed this weekend. We are the Body of Christ and we must always work for unity.

When St. John Paul II came to the United States in 1979, he delivered a powerful homily on the National Mall. He based it on our national motto, “E Pluribus Unum”, “out of many, one”. Seeking unity in the midst of diversity is quite a challenge.

Whether we are speaking of our na-tion, our Church, or our parish, there are many forces that seek to under-mine our sense of unity or oneness.

The Eucharist seeks to bridge our differences and heal our divisions. In the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup, we are called to stand together as the daughters and sons of our heavenly Father.

I appeal to anyone who feels sepa-rated from the table of the Lord to see this Feast as an invitation to begin the journey of healing. Perhaps you need to go to confession to set things right, perhaps you need to begin the annulment process, maybe you need to explore your feelings that have resulted in be-ing alienated or hurt by the Church. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of the priests to get together. Misunderstandings, being treated poorly, feeling let down, can lead to a painful sense of not belonging. We all belong!

On this Feast, I thank -- from the bot-tom of my heart -- our deacons, Jim Revord and Dave Kalina, who, in a special way, minister to the table of the Lord. I thank our Eucharistic ministers who so reverently serve all of us when we gather for liturgy. I thank profoundly our ministers of care who faithfully bring the Eucharist to the home bound, the hospitalized and those residents of nursing homes. If you know of someone who is not able to come to Mass, please call the offi ce so we can schedule a visit with one of our care ministers.

Just a reminder, we have gluten-free hosts available at all our liturgies.

I want to congratulate Steve Swanson who is retiring as the Director of the Grove after 38 years of awesome service to our com-munity. His love for creation and his commitment to educating us all on our environment, will leave a lasting mark. He and Chuck Balling were so good to me when I fi rst came to Glenview, introducing me to the beautiful parks and recreation facili-ties this community has to offer.

I am also deeply grateful to Judi Haugh who has been an outstand-ing assistant principal here at OLPH School. Her family is moving and we will miss her terribly. She has been such a blessing.

I know this is far off but just to get you thinking about the possibility; we will be having a parish pilgrimage June 23rd to July 3rd 2020, to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. The Passion Play is only performed once every ten years in this beautiful Bavarian town. We will also be visiting the Adriatic coast, the Alps and Venice. Space will be limited. There are bro-chures available in the parish offi ce.

Have a blessed week,

Fr. Jerry Boland

seek, share, rejoice - news & notesTheCity – An Important UpdateWhen TheCity was introduced, it was our hope it would enhance the sense of community we experience at OLPH by creating more opportunities for one-to-one interactions, providing an online forum for ministries to share ideas, events, needs, and service opportunities while enriching discipleship through shared prayer, refl ections, and witnesses.

Regretfully, TheCity is being discontinued by its developer; therefore, as of June 30, we will end our relationship with TheCity and take a breath, so to speak. It’s an opportunity to evalu-ate our communications efforts, existing social platforms and goals related to Engagement and Communio.

For members with live profi les and active groups within TheCity, please save any fi les, contacts or key dates related to your ministry, prior to Monday, June 26. If you require assistance, please contact Laura Kearney, [email protected]; or Melissa Conroy, [email protected].

Early Deadline: for the July 9 BulletinAll submissions to the July 9 Bulletin must be received no later than 12 Noon, Tuesday, June 27.Please email content to [email protected].

Building Peaceful BridgesWilmette Public Library · Tuesday June 20 · 7pmJoin us for an evening discussion with Ahlam Mahmood, and a few of her new friends as she tells her story of creating a new home in a foreign land.

Ahlam fl ed her home in Iraq after being kidnapped for running a humanitarian center. She fl ed to Syria where she continued her dangerous work with humanitarian groups and journalists. When Syrian authorities became suspicious of her activities, they put her in jail. Journalist Deborah Campbell tracked her down and became instrumental in her being released from jail, leaving Syria and relocating to Chicago.

Ahlam’s story continues as she and her family start their new life in Chicago. They confront fears and myths as they courageously step into a whole new world.

• How did she and her children manage to connect with a new homeland?

• What kind of help did she need and from whom?

• How does she keep up her spirits and contribute to the wellbeing of others?

Meet Lori Lucchetti who was inspired to gather a small group of women together over lunches with Ahlam and her friends in her home in Glenview. This “Building Peaceful Bridges” group promotes the mission of inspiring positive actions and peaceful resolutions in today’s world beginning with ones’ local community.

Read Ahlam’s compelling story, A Disappearance in Damascus, published by Knopf, Canada (Amazon.ca) and forthcoming by Picador, U.S. on Sept. 5, 2017.

Care for Creation Listening Sessions“This is a watershed moment for the church, for humanity and for the planet which Pope Francis calls our common home. It’s time for the church to be bold — to speak about major issues — and to achieve a new level of relevance in people’s lives.” - Cardinal Blase Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago

As people of faith, we have a moral responsibility to be good stewards of God’s creation. Pope Francis urges us to have “a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.” Join us as we refl ect on our Catholic faith, and how it calls on us to be in right relationship with God, with one another, and with the earth, our common home.

Please RSVP for the June 24 listening session at Notre Dame de Chicago; 9am to 12 pm. RSVP online at https://goo.gl/64JDA3 or call 312-534-5393 .

@PONTIFEXPope Francis Tweet of the Week
