The Olympics started a very very long time ago (over 2,700 years ago!)

in a place called Olympia, in Greece.

We’re over here

And here’s Greece

So why do you think we call the event ‘The

Olympic Games’?

Page 5: Olympic games

The Greeks came up with the Olympic

Games to celebrate the Greek Gods Zeus

and Hera.

The Olympic games happened every 4

years, and still happens every 4 years now too.

Long ago, in Olympia, a flame was lit outside the Temple of Hera, using the

sun’s rays.

Messengers would then take the torch around the country to tell everyone about

the Games.

Nowadays, a fire is started at the

Temple of Hera using the sun’s rays, just like how they did it long ago, to tell us that the Olympic

Games has started.

A torch is then lit to carry the flames

around Greece, and then all the way to the country that’s

hosting the Olympic Games!

These are some of the Olympic Torches from the

past Olympic Games.

Each time there’s an Olympic Games, the host

country designs a new torch.

Torch will go before it stops in

London.
