Souvenir Research

Annotate your chosen images by commenting on the following things:

1. what is the function of the product (what is meant to do).

2. it’s appearance: shape, colour, texture.3. what material(s) you think it is made

from.4. what you think of the graphics that

appear on it – are they attractive, are they suitable?

Page 5: Olympic Games Souvenir Packaging Graphics Project.

PackagingResearch

Annotate your chosen images by commenting on the following things:

1. How does the packaging work – how does it contain/protect the product inside it?

2. What materials do you think it is made from?

3. What impact would they have on the environment – could they be recycled easily?

4. What do you think of the graphics that appear on it – are they attractive, are they suitable, would they appeal to consumers?

Page 6: Olympic Games Souvenir Packaging Graphics Project.

Product Packaging Analysis:• In groups analyse an actual souvenir product and its packaging.• Write down your answers to the following questions on the sheet provided:

1. What product are you looking at? 2. Describe the type of packaging – is it a box/carton, bag, wrapper, etc.? 3. How is it opened/closed? 4. How well does the product fit inside the packaging – is it a snug fit? 5. What sort of materials do you think were used to make the packaging –

cardboard, polythene, acetate, etc? 6. Describe the colours and styles of lettering on the packaging – are they

appropriate?

7. What information is given on the packaging? 8. Are there any difficulties users might have? 9. What could be changed to improve the packaging?

10.Can the packaging be part of a sustainable world – i.e. can it be made from recycled and recyclable materials?

England Mug.Box.

Tuck-in lid and ‘automatic base’.It fits well.

Corrugated cardboard.

Colours reflect the national flag. Sans serif text is easy to read.Washing instructions. It may come apart.

It could have some more obvious football related imagery.

Cardboard is easily made from recycled fibres and can be recycled again afterwards. This helps reduce impact on the environment.

Product Packaging Analysis:

1. Starter: Key words wordsearch – discuss terminology/meanings. Link to objective.

2. Main: Analyse three examples – working in pairs. Rotate products every five minutes.

3. Plenary: Summarise findings – each group to nominate a speaker to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of an analysed example.

Why is analysing existing product packaging helpful when developing your own design ideas?

Packaging Disassembly

This is a cut-out window that allows consumers to see the mug inside the

box.

These three flaps tuck in to make a ‘crash lock’/’automatic base’ that does not require

glue.

The packaging is made of corrugated cardboard, with an outer layer of colour

printed paper (varnished/laminated)

• Use MS Word to create your questionnaire.

• Draw tables so you can tick multiple-choice answers using a tally system.

• Do not print off multiple copies to give out individually – this is an unnecessary waste of paper!

L/O: Show understanding of the purpose of market research. All must (E): produce a set of basic questions that help identify demands. Most should (C): relate questions to the design of graphic products. Some could (A): collect data and visually represent outcomes using charts.

Page 10: Olympic Games Souvenir Packaging Graphics Project.

Analysing survey results using pie charts:1. Open a new spreadsheet in Excel (Start > All Programs > MS Office

2010)2. Type your first question in the A/2 cell3. Type your multiple choice answers in the B/1, C1, D1, etc. cells4. Enter the number of answers for each question in the B/2, C/2, D/2, etc.

cells5. Highlight all the rows and columns you used for your data.

8. The pie chart will be inserted on to your spreadsheet.9. Copy and paste the pie chart into an A3 landscape formatted page in

MS Word.

Repeat this process for your other questions. When finished Save As… to your own user space.

6. Click the Insert tab button.7. Choose the Pie Chart option.

Industrial Design Practices:• Creating/testing models/prototypes.• Seeing how well they stand up to

use.• Developing designs using CAD

(computer aided design) – 2D Design, Adobe Photoshop software.

• Printing artwork on EODs (electronic output devices) e.g. sublimation printer.

• Using CAM (computer aided manufacturing) – e.g. lasercutter.

Health & Safety:• How H&S is Strictly regulated by law –

through HSE (Health & Safety Executive).

• Handling sharp equipment with care – i.e. scalpel (knife) with metal safety ruler.

• Using spraymount (aerosol glue) in a well ventilated area. Being aware of it being flammable and irritant.

• Being aware of others working around you – not leaving things in the way.

• Wearing suitable clothing.

Social Issues:• Could the product be offensive to

someone? Does it insult someone?• Are there any religious, racial, or

gender-related issues?• Have offensive symbols been used?• Is the any nudity, violence?• Could the words be offensive?• Could the images be offensive?• Are the manufacturing working

conditions harmful to anyone?

Environmental Issues:• Using materials that can easily be

recycled or are degradeable (rot easily) helps to preserve natural resources.

• Fossil fuels that are burnt to produce energy (to operate machinery) cause pollution of the atmosphere.

• The ‘Green’ alternative is to use ‘renewable’ energy sources i.e. solar and wind.

L/O: Show understanding of designing and making considerations. All must (E): produce basic summaries of the different issues to consider. Most should (C): illustrate and describe examples to support statements. Some could (A): elaborate further with detailed case studies.

Sublimation Printing Process:IN YOUR OWN WORDS you need to write about the following process;• The sublimation printing process is

used to print graphics on to a resistant material – in this case a ceramic mug.

• The design is printed on to sublimation paper using an ink jet printer.

• The inks are permanent dyes, rather than water-based.

• The design is printed as a mirror image.

• The printed design is attached to the surface of the product with tape

• The product is placed in a heated press at a high temperature for a set amount of time.

• When the sublimation paper is removed from the product, the design is transferred on to it permanently.

L/O: Show understanding of the purpose of sublimation printing. All must (E): produce a basic step-by-step description of the process. Most should (C): illustrate equipment used and attach printed artwork. Some could (A): provide photographic evaluation of finished outcome.

Manufacturing Specification:

IN YOUR OWN WORDS GIVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

In order to securely contain the commemorative mug product the packaging will be a cuboid box made to the following manufacturing specification:

Dimensions:

• Length – 110mm• Width – 82mm• Height – 95mm

The base will feature a ‘crash-lock’ system of flaps for ease of assembly and flattening after use.

Materials:

• A3 paper (to print artwork on to).• Six-sheet thick card.• Acetate (for the window in the box).• Spraymount/adhesive.

Page 28: Olympic Games Souvenir Packaging Graphics Project.

Final Evaluation:

• How close to what you said in the design brief are your final outcomes? Explain. (Look

at your design brief. Look at your finished products).

• Did you meet all the requirements that you stated in your Design Specification?

• What did consumers think of the products? Ask third parties for their opinions.

• What parts of the project caused you the most trouble. Say how and why.

• How did you overcome these problems?

• What testing did you do when designing and making – e.g. did you create several

drawings, drafts/prototypes and identify weaknesses to improve?

• What changes did you make and why?

• What impact did these changes have on your timekeeping/progress?

• Are they anymore things you would add or improve if you had more time?

• What do you think about your final outcomes? Weigh up the strengths and

weaknesses honestly.

L/O: Show understanding of how to complete a final evaluation. All must (E): Answer the questions clearly, referring to project work. Most should (C): Write fully explanatory sentences which make sense. Some could (A): Use continuous prose and include technical vocabulary.
