WRIA 9 partnered with the City of Seattle, the Seattle Art Museum, King Conservation District, and University of Washington to create and monitor an enhanced habitat zone for juvenile salmon while improving access between the Olympic Sculpture Park and the water’s edge.
• The seawall was left intact, with large rocks added to shore up the structure and to create a habitat bench below the tide mark for kelp and other vegetation to grow and attract insects for fish.
• A pocket beach was excavated north of the seawall to provide shallow water habitat for juvenile salmon; trees, shrubs and wood were placed on the beach to further improve habitat. The pocket beach also created a location for park visitors to access Elliott Bay, unique along the Seattle waterfront. University of Washington scientists pre-and-post monitoring showed the site successfully attracts juvenile salmon.
