Keep Your Meter Box Clear As a property owner, you are responsible for continuing to keep the pathway to, and the area surrounding, your meter box clear. It is important to keep this area clear to allow our staff to easily locate meters to collect accurate readings, perform repairs and maintenance, shut off the meter in the case of emergency and to replace meters. Please keep a 2-ft area around each side of the meter box clear of debris as well as 6-ft above the meter box. The pathway to the meter box should also have a clearance of 6-ft. If our crew is not able to access the meter, we will leave a notice on your door. If the meter box is not cleared by the date specified, we will trim the area to meet requirements. Also please do not park cars or leave other objects covering meter boxes. Olympic View Water & Sewer District’s Bi-Annual Newsletter Spring/Summer 2015 Do You Have An Irrigation System? A properly operated irrigation system helps ensure a healthy, beautiful lawn and garden, but can pose a risk to our drinking water. In order to keep your drinking water safe, most automatic irrigation systems are required to have a Backflow Prevention Assembly installed as part of the system. These devices are used to make sure that once water passes through your meter it can not get back into the drinking water system. Most of these devices require annual testing to ensure they are working properly and to protect our drinking water. This testing is required by District Policy and Washington State Health Department regulations. Does your underground irrigation system have a backflow protection? Are you getting it tested annually? The District is required to keep a database of all backflow preventers in use in the District. We send more than 700 reminder letters to get your backflow device tested each year. If you think you have a backflow preventer that hasn’t been tested, or you are not sure, our staff of certified Cross Connection Control Specialists can help you check your system. If you would like to set up an appointment to have your system checked, or have questions please contact our office. Water Outlook for Summer 2015 We have had many customers ask, “will there be enough water for the summer?” Seattle Public Utilities has been storing additional rainfall in their reservoirs and making operational adjustments to compensate for the lower-than- normal snowpack. SPU reports good water levels as of April 14, and are confident that there will not be any water restrictions this summer. Please see www.seattle.gov/util for more information.

Do You Have An Irrigation System?A properly operated irrigation system helps ensure a healthy, beautiful lawn and garden, but can pose a risk to our drinking water. GARDEN CORNERMANAGING SOIL MOISTURE - How do you tell it’s time to

water? If you say “when the soil looks dry”, think again! A dry surface often hides moist soil beneath. So probe into the soil

with your fingers or a tool to see whether the soil needs watering. To develop a richer soil that will better retain

moisture, mix compost into the planting bed at plant-ing time. Mulching the soil surface with compost or arborist wood chips will help retain moisture as well. MULCH - Mulch the surface of your garden beds

after your spring weeding. A blanket of compost or wood chip mulch (2-3 inches thick) will conserve soil moisture when spring warms up, delay the need to begin watering, and feed the soil. It will also help keep weeds out, and make it easier to hand pull weeds that do take hold.

GARDENING CLASSES - Take advantage of the free Savvy Gardener classes offered by the Saving Water Partnership. For more information and class schedule, please visit savingwater.org.

Changes On Your BillsAs requested by our customers, we added a graph to our bills, showing usage patterns for the last two years. This can help you compare your usage to prior years for the same billing cycle to see what your usage patterns are.

Worry-Free Payment OptionsWe offer ACH (Automatic Cash Handling) through your checking or savings account. The full billed amount will be deducted from the account you specify on the 10th of your billing month (every other month). You will still receive your bill to review and keep for your records. There will be a note at the bottom of your bill stating that you are signed up for ACH and not to send payment. By signing up for automatic payment, you will always receive the $1.00 discount that we offer for paying your bill by the 16th of the month, you will also avoid penalties and never be at risk of getting shutoff. This is a great option for customers who travel frequently, misplace their bill, or just don’t want to worry about getting their bills paid on time.

Save Paper - Switch to Email Billing If you would like to receive your bills by email, please send an email to [email protected]. Please include your name, service address, account number and let us know you would like to receive e-bills.
