Holtsclaw who is gradu- ating in May with a degree in management, was nomi- nated for the award by Kyle Pendleton, assistant dean of students at Purdue. “It truly has been an honor to advise Steve over the past two years,” Pendleton wrote in his nomination form. “I can honestly say I am a better fraternity and sorority pro- fessional and fraternity man because of my inter- actions with him. He is, without a doubt, the most remarkable student leader I have had the pleasure to work with” in 13 years of advising. Pendleton wrote that one of Holtsclaw’s major accomplishments as the 2007 IFC president was bringing together the four Purdue Greek councils – Interfraternity, Panhellenic, National Pan- Hellenic (traditionally black organizations) and Multicultural Greek – under one umbrella. “Steve was adamant that IFC and Panhellenic become inclusive in all their initiatives and pro- gramming areas,” Pendleton wrote. “He not only made the fraternity and sorority community better during his tenure, he made every- one he worked with a bet- ter leader, student, admin- istrator and community member.” Holtsclaw’s nomination was accompanied by 18 reference letters of sup- port. officers and various Purdue pro-gram coordinators.

His successor as IFC president,Sam Utley, credited Holtsclaw’stenacity and ingenuity as qualifiersfor the award.

“Steve partnered with the NorthAmerican InterfraternityConference and the U.S.Department of Education to pre-pare a strategic plan tackling theissue of alcohol and recruitment, becoming the first school to do so,”Utley wrote in his letter. “Thisimproved the safety of all studentson campus, not just the members offraternities and sororities.”

Pablo Malavenda, associate deanof students at Purdue, was anotherletter writer who laudedHoltsclaw’s leadership.

“Steve’s personal commitment tolead the way toward positivechange, his focus on the needs ofothers and his compassion for allpeople has become contagious,”Malavenda wrote.

“In my 20 years working as aprofessional with fraternities andsororities, I cannot remember amore effective, mature and coura-geous leader than Steve.”

In his letter, the 2007-08 studentbody president Eric Van Houten, who is not Greek, praisedHoltsclaw’s work on campus.

“To understand the definition ofcommitment and service to a largercause, one only needs to talk withSteve Holtsclaw,” Van Houtenwrote.

Of particular note are supportletters from those outside Purdue.

“He was focused on the big pic-ture and was instrumental in thebirth of an idea to create a quanti-tative standards program for all ofthe Greek chapters of the Big Tenthat combined elements from exist-ing programs,” Nat Sheppard, IFCpresident at Ohio State wrote.

Lori Hart Ebert, director of alco-hol education for the Pi Kappa Phinational fraternity, was alsoimpressed with her interaction with

Holtsclaw.“Steve is one of those rare lead-

ers who understands what it meansto lead with integrity while stickingto his values,” she wrote.

Dave Westol, former executivedirector of Theta Chi Internationaland now a consultant, worked withHoltsclaw at various Greek confer-ences. Westol knows the person forwhom the award is named.

“I know Wayne is a ‘stand-upguy,’ ” Westol wrote. “StevenHoltsclaw is also a stand-up guy.He was, and is, willing to tackletough, uncomfortable (risk manage-ment) issues through candid discus-sion and leadership.

“A quote attributed to AlbusDumbedore from the ‘Harry Potter’series of books is: ‘It takes a greatdeal of courage to stand up to yourenemies, but a great deal more tostand up to your friends.’ That isneeded quality one finds in leaders, and that reflects what StevenHoltsclaw has accomplished atPurdue.”

Although separated by nearlyeight decades, two Omega brothersknow the key to being named a PiKapp Scholar – a good academicwork ethic.

The Pi Kapp Scholars programis the second oldest tradition with-in the national fraternity – secondto the Ritual of Initiation. AlumnusGus Riggs (Omega No. 89) was inthe first year of award winners in1927-28 and Josh Stolarz (OmegaNo. 1643) won in the 2007-08group. The scholarship, now valuedat $1,000 per student, recognizesacademic achievement and leader-ship potential and is awarded bythe Pi Kappa Phi Foundation.

“I was pleased to be selected, forsure,” said Riggs, who worked ofr45 years for a General Motors divi-sions in engineering. “Purdue was alot of hard work so I did a lot ofstudying and was active in variousprograms and offices on campus.

“So, though my work with thefraternity, this was another thingthat I thought I had earned.”

Riggs, 98 years old, annuallysupports both the Pi Kappa PhiFoundation and the Omega chapterwith donations.

“I’m a contributor to about 25different organizations,” he said.“There are so many places to putmoney. I try to give back to whathas been given to me. Scholasticachievement is one worthy thingthat everyone should consider. Iwould recommend that someoneinterested in giving money to con-sider that alternative.”

Since 1927, the Foundation hasnamed 536 Pi Kapp Scholars – andthe Omega chapter has had themost award winners all-time with21. In fact, the Omega chapter hadthe first award winner, the lateWilliam Pritchard (Omega No.77) in 1927.

Stolarz, who graduated inDecember 2007, also values theaward.

“Winning the Pi Kapp ScholarsAward is a tremendous award thatfor me epitomizes all the work thatI have accomplished during myexperience both as a student ofPurdue University and a brother ofPi Kappa Phi.

“Being a part of a line of proudPi Kapp Scholars certainly adds tothe significance of the award. And,above all, I am proud that I amable to carry on and add to theOmega tradition in representingour chapter for high scholastic hon-ors and campus leadership.”

Stolarz graduated with a cumu-lative 3.98 GPA in management. Heworks for the Indianapolis office ofKPMG, which is an internationalprofessional firm providing audit, tax and advisory services. He isalso pursuing a CPA.

While an undergraduate, Stolarzserved as treasurer and Push chair-man. He was also a finalist for the2006 Homecoming Court.

Riggs, however, was nostalgic, recalling his award from 80 yearsago.

“The fraternity was an educationitself,” he said. “In your profession-

al careers, you are taught to be sen-sitive to others’ needs and how toget along with people. The fraterni-ty helped me get started in that. That is why I felt an obligation tothe fraternity even 80 years later.

“When I joined Pi Kappa Phi, ithelped me tremendously.”

Stolarz agreed.“Pi Kappa Phi has had a pro-

found impact in helping me developkeen interpersonal skills, such ascommunication, as well as knowinghow to effectively work with anarray of different personalitystyles.”

The strength of the chapter maybe at its all-time best in terms ofmembership, campus involvement, philanthropic efforts, leadership aswell as athletic and academicachievement.

With the addition of the springpledge class, our undergraduatemembership stands at 105. Thatranks Pi Kappa Phi No. eighth outof 39 Purdue fraternities.

Last fall, we had 65 membersliving in house, which representsthe most in 20 years.

Chapter members were involvedin 173 campus organizations in thefall. Members ranked 13th ingrades with a 2.872 GPA. Sevenmembers had a 4.0, a total of 25members received semester honorsand 45 were at a 3.0 or higher.

Individually, the chapter had the2007 IFC president (SteveHoltsclaw), 2007 IFC Director ofAcademics (Joe Schaefer), 2008IFC VP-Operations (Jim Miller),2008 IFC Director of Publications(Ryan Nugent), 2007-08 Pi KappScholar (Josh Stolarz), and the2007 Junior Greek Scholar (PhilSharon) among others. For sixstraight years, the Omega chapterhas been on the IFC ExecutiveCouncil.

The chapter’s commitment toservice remains strong. In 2006-07,the chapter raised $7,500 for PushAmerica. Because of that success, the chapter was able to partnerwith a local agency assisting thosewith disabilities, Wabash Center, and contribute $2,300 to assist itsprogramming. Last fall marked thethird consecutive semester thechapter coordinated a PushAccessABILITY project locally bybuilding wheelchair ramps formembers of the local community. Inthe fall, the chapter continued itsPi Kapp-Alpha Phi Greek GolfOpen. In March, the chapter willconduct a week-long empathy weekcalled War of the Roses.

For the second consecutive year,

the chapter finished second inGreek intramural athletics.Chapter members won UltimateFrisbee and badminton while fin-ishing second in team flag football. We had four No. 1-seeds in teamplayoffs, had six individual intra-mural champions in addition to sixteam and seven individual titleslast spring.

In addition to the major leader-ship positions listed above, thechapter has the president of Orderof Omega (Greek leadership soci-ety), members of the Old MastersCentral Committee, Mortar Board(national senior honor society),Purdue Student PublishingFoundation (board that owns ThePurdue Exponent), College Mentorsfor Kids, Gamma Sigma Alpha(Greek honor society) and BoilerGold Rush (freshman orientationprogram).

The theme for the spring semes-ter is “Plan for the Future.”Although the chapter has seen a 25percent increase in membership,

created new programming andmember development initiatives inthe last three years, we need tofocus on where we want to be longterm. A strategic planning retreatwas held this spring to help focusour efforts in the next five years.

The chapter, working alongsidethe housing corporation, was ableto do major improvements to thechapter house in 2007. The projectsincluded adding air conditioning onthe first floor, retile the basementfloors, renovate bathrooms, installoutside benches and a permanentgrill. The chapter with moneyraised in recent Mom’s Days wasable to install two 52-inch, highdefinition televisions in the GreatHall that have satellite hookup.

The chapter members thankalumni and volunteers for theirfinancial and advisory support andlook forward to continued assis-tance in the future.
