the Super Grand Prix tournamentspremier athletics competitions including the IAAF Golden League events,

OMEGA’S ATHLETIC TIMEKEEPING LEGACY OMEGA’s enduring sports timekeeping legacy can be traced back more than a century when its

chronographs were used to time the Gordon Bennett Cup hot air balloon race. OMEGA had crafted the first

chronograph in 1898 and within a decade, these were already used to measure time for more than 16

different sports competitions. In 1932 OMEGA became official Olympic timekeeper for the first time. The

30 chronographs used that year in Los Angeles evolved into the 420 tons of equipment used in Beijing when

OMEGA assumed its Olympic timekeeping commitment for the 23rd

time.

OMEGA AND THE WORLD OF ATHLETICS TIMEKEEPING Although the number and variety of events make the Olympic Games the most complex and challenging of the

world championships, OMEGA’s track and field timekeeping experts are busy every year at some of the world’s

OMEGA is widely known not only for its timekeeping performance at some of the world’s most prestigious

sporting events but also as the company behind research, development and manufacture of the most famous

devices used in precision sports timing, among them the Scan’O’Vision photo-finish cameras, false-start

detection technology, and high-speed video systems.

OMEGA SCAN’O’VISION

Perhaps the most widely known sports timekeeping device used in athletics is the OMEGA Scan‘O’Vision, the

photo-finish camera set up at the finish line of sprints, hurdles and other races. Although the first “electric eyes”

(photocells) appeared in 1920, it wasn’t until 1948 in London that OMEGA used photoelectric cells to trigger

camera shutters at the Olympic Games. The newest generation, the Scan’O’Vision Star, takes more than 2000

images each second with a high resolution 2048 pixel vertical line, and the corresponding time is displayed with

each picture. This extraordinarily high resolution means that photofinish judges have access to higher zoom and

more detail, resulting in faster decisions even in especially tight finishes.

STARTING BLOCKS AND REACTION TIMES

Built-in sensors in the starting blocks are a key component in OMEGA’s advanced false-start detection

technology. Each set of starting blocks is outfitted with a loudspeaker linked to the starter’s pistol, so that all

contestants hear the start signal at precisely the same time. At the start of each race, the false-start detection

system measures each runner’s reaction time, defined as the interval between the sound of the starter’s pistol

and the athlete’s response. Each runner’s response to the sound of the start pistol (pressure exerted by the

athlete’s foot against the blocks) is detected by the sensors built into the starting blocks and measured by the

OMEGA timing device. If the time measured is less than the time in which a person can possibly react to the

sound of the starter’s gun, the runner has “jumped the gun”, and the timekeeper signals a false start.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF EUROPEAN ATHLETICS

The European Athletics U23 Championships are an important “stepping stone” for athletes making their way from the junior to senior ranks. The aspiring European, world and Olympic champions gathering in Kaunas for this edition of the event will be able to gauge their progress in their chosen discipline against the best of Europe in their age group – an invaluable experience for them.

Indeed, Olympic champions such as Russia’s Yelena Isinbayeva and Sweden’s Carolina Klüft and Christian Olson have all competed – and won gold medals – at the European Athletics U23 Championships. Member Federations are responding in kind to the experience on offer for their athletes and we are pleased that interest in the event remains strong as we celebrate its seventh anniversary. Up to 1,000 athletes from 48 countries are set to compete in Kaunas. The beautiful city of Kaunas was, of course, the host of the European Athletics Junior Championships in 2005, with Lithuania forging an excellent reputation for itself as an attractive destination for high-calibre and well-organised international sporting events. European Athletics greatly appreciates the efforts made by the local authorities, the Athletics Federation of Lithuania and the local organisers in preparing these championships at the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadium. We warmly welcome all the media present here and we hope you bear witness to an extremely enjoyable and exciting event in Kaunas. Hansjörg Wirz President, European Athletics

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF KAUNAS

More and more significant international events are hosted in Kaunas. We are proud of the abundance of cultural and sports events which make the name of Kaunas known and give an exceptional status to the city. One of the big bonuses is the right to organise the European Athletics U23 Championships 2009. Over 1,000 participants from 48 countries are coming to Kaunas. The best athletes, participants and prize-winners of the Beijing Olympic Games will compete here.

We are glad that conditions for the championships have been accepted and evaluated positively by European Athletics. We hope that expectations of athletes, coaches and organisers will be met, and national, world and European age group records will be beaten during the championships. The European Athletics U23 Championships will be among the most prestigious events complementing the celebrations to mark the millennium of Lithuania.

Andrius Kupčinskas, Mayor of Kaunas

KAUNAS WELCOMES EUROPE

A cosy and green city

Kaunas is a centre of undiscovered culture, traditions and history of Lithuania. Discover real Kaunas by wandering along the paved streets with remarkable XVIth century buildings located along Vilnius Street and around City Hall square; following the paths of the pagans in one of many parks, admiring a combination of modern and traditional shops, bars and cafes in Laisvės Avenue. Being the second city of Lithuania, Kaunas can boast of the first theatre school, the first opera performance, the first song festival and

the first radio broadcast.

Green avenues, squares open to everyone, natural river banks, parks and rivers will leave you enchanted. You will be impressed by a unique old Ąžuolynas (oak wood within the city), the hill of Napoleon and many other natural places.

Kaunas is unique for its seven regional parks: each of them can be admired for their unspoiled nature. In the Open Air Museum of Lithuania in Rumšiškės you can enjoy a collection of old wooden houses from different regions of Lithuania.

Kaunas – a capital of sports

Athletics championships, martial arts, boxing, gliding and dance competitions which have been hosted in Kaunas are evidence about the city spirit – its spirit for sports.

The first athletics competition of Lithuania was held in Kaunas in 1919. In the interwar period two national championships took place there. After restoration of Independence the most significant national and international athletics events were staged in Kaunas, among them the European Athletics Junior Championships 2005 and the “European Athletics Permit Meeting“ in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Kaunas is a synonym for basketball. The first basketball competition was organised in Kaunas in 1922. Kaunas is proud of an exceptional basketball history, with the legendary “Žalgiris” team representing the city in major sports events. A former NBA star, Arvydas Sabonis, comes from “Žalgiris.”

You can enjoy a variety of recreation activities such as fishing, riding a horse, sailing, rowing, gliding and paintball. Where else could you realise dreams such as these?

VENUE

In 1921 the Lithuanian Physical Education Union rented a big section of land (about 3.5ha) from Kaunas City Administration where the playing field with running lanes was mounted. After 13 years it was reconstructed by the initiative of Ministry of Education and next to it the House of Physical Education (now it is Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education) was built. The old stadium was unique in Europe: its running lanes were 500m long. The most significant event in the pre-war period was the First National Olympics in July 1938. Ten thousand people came to the opening ceremony and 2,000 athletes from all over the world took part in the competition. Since 1983 the hall with the renovated stadium makes one sport complex. In 1993 the sport complex was named S. Darius and S. Girėnas Sport Centre. Many significant sport and cultural events took place there: the World Lithuanian Games, World Lithuanian Song Festival, Baltic Sport Games, European Athletics Championships, Baltic Athletics Championships, etc. In 1998 the stadium was renovated: running lanes were reconstructed, a new coating was laid, new measuring equipment and facilities acquired, new stalls mounted. Following UEFA requirements plastic chairs were fitted (9,180 seats). In 2005 the 18th European Championships was held in the stadium. Getting ready for that major sport event the stadium equipment was installed, new scoreboard was mounted and new warm-up and throwing areas were set up. In 2009 lanes, jump sites, VIP tribune and media seats in the stadium were renovated again.

The stadium has the following competition sites: • 8 lanes • 2 High Jump sites • 2 Pole Vault sites • 4 sites for Long / Triple Jump • 2 Shot Put Circles • 2 Combined Discus / Hammer Circles • 2 Javelin sites

EPSON TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTS EUROPEAN ATHLETICS

Epson’s history with athletics dates back to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics when Seiko Epson

Corporation was chosen to provide high precision crystal chronometers and printing timers.

Today the company continues to support athletics through its partnership with European

Athletics.

Epson’s services to European Athletics, including innovative media and commentator

information systems, have come to be trusted by athletes, audiences and the media

worldwide. It is thanks to the unique display terminals, of which there may be several

hundreds at any major event, that journalists, TV and radio commentators are able to receive

the latest results, past records and other useful information simply by touching the screen.

Whether through the latest digital imaging products or partnerships such as with European

Athletics, Epson strives to nurture talent and to enable people not only to meet but to exceed

their expectations. With this in mind. the Epson Performance Evaluation System was

developed to analyse field events from new angles. The three-dimensional analysis that

follows each jump provides television viewers with information they did not have access to in

the past - such as the accuracy of the jump - as well as providing athletes with the means to

better understand and improve their performances.

Epson is a global leader in imaging products including printers, 3LCD projectors and small-

and medium-sized LCDs. With an innovative and creative culture, Epson is dedicated to

exceeding the vision and expectations of customers worldwide with products known for their

superior quality, functionality, compactness and energy efficiency.
