AgendaTime Optimized Substation Asset Testing and Diagnosis
Condition based maintenance has widely been accepted as the most effective maintenance strategy for HV substation equipment. Through accurate knowledge of the state of condition and corresponding maintenance action, the lifetime of assets is extended while ensuring a more reliable and safe operation at the same time.
The disadvantage of such a strategy are the costs due to the power outages that are required in order to perform the diagnostic measurements.
At OMICRON we counter this disadvantage. We develop solutions that combine high portability, effort minimizing connection concepts and intelligent automated testing routines. This enables faster and easier testing and condition assessment than ever before without compromising on the scope of results.
With diagnostic concepts that involve simultaneous time optimized testing on various HV assets the overall outage time for diagnostic measurements is greatly reduced to only a few hours.
Learn more about this topic, experience what OMICRON has to offer and get an idea of just about how much this can improve your process.

Time Optimized Power Transformer Testing
> With a highly portable system of only 20kg it is now possible to perform a full range of standard routine tests and additional tests with one connection setup that involves only three cables.*
> The testing time of power transformers is greatly reduced to a matter of only a few hours without compromising the results.
> This time is sufficient to accommodate testing of other substation assets simultaneously.
The intuitive side panel and color coded cables of TESTRANO 600 make it easy to connect the test set for safe and reliable measurements.
EXCITATION CURRENT
Excitation current measurements are performed to
assess the turn-to-turn insulation of the windings,
the magnetic circuit of a transformer as well as the
tap changer. In order to perform this test with 10 kV,
the CP TD1 is required.
SHORT-CIRCUIT IMPEDANCE / LEAKAGE REACTANCE
Leakage reactance / short-circuit impedance
measurements are sensitive methods to assess
possible deformation or displacements of windings.
FREQUENCY RESPONSE OF STRAY LOSSES
The frequency response of stray lossess (FRSL) test
identifies short-circuits between parallel strands and
local overheating due to excessive eddy current losses.
DEMAGNETIZATION
Demagnetization of the core is recommended after DC
has been applied, e.g. during winding resistance tests.
The risk of high inrush currents during energization,
and influences on other tests are reduced.
POWER / DISSIPATION FACTOR (with CP TD1)
Power/dissipation factor and capacitance measurements
are performed to investigate the insulation of power
transformers and bushings.
TRANSFORMER TURNS RATIO
Transformer turns ratio (TTR) measurements verify
the operating principle of a power transformer to
detect shorted turns and open-circuit conditions.
DC WINDING RESISTANCE
DC winding resistance measurements are used to
assess contact problems of the windings and tap
changers.
DYNAMIC RESISTANCE
Dynamic resistance measurements (DRM) are used
to check the on-load tap changer (OLTC) for poorly
maintained and damaged OLTC contacts.
> Highly portable (only 20kg)
> Only 3 cables – one connection setup for all tests*
> Software guided testing, assessment and reporting
> Testing time reduced to a couple of hours allowing for much shorter outages
> Full range of standard routine tests plus added benefit tests
> Maximum safety

Advanced Power Transformer Diagnosis
Partial Discharge Analysis and Monitoring
Partial discharge (PD) can damage insulation materials in power transformer bushings and windings. This can lead to their failure and costly outages. PD measurement is a reliable and non-destructive method used to diagnose the condition of a power transformer insulation system.
OMICRON's PD analysis and monitoring solutions offer:
> Fiber optic data transmission for safe operation and improved signal-to-noise ratio
> Simultaneous and synchronous multi-channel PD measurement for more complete analysis
> Active noise suppression and gating methods for optimal accuracy despite high interference
> Powerful tools (3PARD and 3FREQ) for separating noise and multiple PD sources
Dielectric Response Analysis
Dielectric response analysis, also known as dielectric frequency response analysis, is used to assess the moisture content of oil-paper insulated power transformers and also assesses the condition of bushings.
DIRANA
> Revolutionary new FDS & PDC+ algorithm for up to 20x faster testing: Less than 2 hours for a full 10 µHz – 1 kHz frequency sweep
> Fully automatic parameter setting and improved moisture assessment for optimal results
Frequency Response Analysis
Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) tests are used to detect winding defects and faults in the magnetic core. They are recommended to be performed at the end of the acceptance test at the manufacturer’s site to establish the transformers original fingerprint, again after transportation and finally, during commissioning.
FRANEO 800
> Widest dynamic measuring range in the industry (> 145 dB)
> Fast measurement times due to intelligent sweep algorithms
Primary Test Manager (PTM) Software
The Primary Test Manager™ (PTM) software supports you during diagnostic tests on circuit breakers, current and voltage transformers, power transformers as well as associated equipment such as bushings and on-load tap changers (OLTC).
PTM operates with TESTRANO 600, CIBANO 500, CPC 100/80, FRANEO 800 and DIRANA. The software guides the user through the testing process with comprehensive testing procedures and detailed wiring diagrams.
MPD series
The MPD 500 and MPD 600 are highly developed devices for measuring partial discharges (PD). Even the smallest PD pulses can be separated from interference and analyzed. The MPD series is suitable for many different PD testing applications.
PDL 650
The PDL 650 is used for acoustic PD fault localization on power transformers. The software compares the data from multiple sensors and enters it into a geometric model. This allows the fault location to be identified reliably.
OMS 605
The OMS 605 is a portable partial discharge monitoring system designed to inspect high-voltage assets under load. It can be employed for temporary and periodic, condition-based monitoring.
Time Optimized Circuit Breaker Testing
> Circuit Breakers are tested regularly for their correct operation. Through an innovative connection concept comprehensive testing takes place without the need for rewiring.
> A usually cumbersome and time-consuming task is reduced to a matter of minutes while a software guided process minimizes risk of error and maximises efficiency.

Timing tests for main contacts, auxiliary contacts and pre-insertion resistor contactsThe timing measurement is one of the main tests on a circuit breaker. This test is to make sure that the circuit breaker trips / closes within its specifications. This will ensure a safe circuit breaker operation so that the circuit breaker won’t be damaged during operation. Furthermore, a working grid protection schema can be guaranteed.
Static and dynamic contact resistanceThe static and dynamic contact resistance measurement evaluates the degree of contact wear and tear of the main contacts and arcing contacts. With a combined dynamic resistance and motion measurement the length of the arcing contacts can be evaluated and used for future reference.
Motion testThe motion test is an effective measurement to check the condition of the entire mechanical link between circuit breaker control circuit and main contacts. The condition of lubrication, any sort of deformed mechanical parts and the condition of the damping units is evaluated.
Motor current testMotor current tests are used to evaluate the condition of the motor coil and the energy storage system (spring or pressure) condition. The motor current profile is recorded and compared with fingerprint results from FAT tests and / or manufacturers’ recommendations.
Minimum pick-up testThe minimum pick-up test is a useful test to evaluate the trip and close coil properties in case of under-voltage supply. The minimum operating voltage for the trip and close coil is measured with this type of test.
