We were met with some fierce compeon from our neighbouring schools of Ballina, Murwullimbah, Banora Point, Tweed River, Wollumbin and Kingscliff. Despite a short prep- araon, all teams remained compeve on the day with our best result coming from the Junior Boys who made the final but unfortunately lost to a very consistent Kingscliff team who won in three sets. Our open boys finished equal third and were noted for their teamwork and persis- tent banter, even when the scoreboard was not in their favour. A special menon needs to be given to the junior girls who only assembled a team three days before the tournament and finished equal fiſth. All teams showed good sportsmanship, ‘played the game’ and most importantly had a lot of fun. School Futsal Program News by Mr Hedge The Futsal Program connues to grow in num- ber and success. The latest tournament was on the 20-21 October and was held with the Fed- eraon of Australian Futsal organisaon at Coomera in Gold Coast in a stadium purpose built for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, a great experience for all the students involved. This trip was a new experience for most of the squad and a very steep learning curve which will help with seeing the benefit of further de- velopment of skills. Despite being outclassed in most games, all the students carried themselves with great dignity and applied themselves fully throughout every game regardless of the result. Meeng and witnessing new schools is another facet of such trips away and seeing people of the same age performing at various levels shows the possibility of achievement through applicaon and the opportunity to make new friends and connecons. On 28 October, we were in Brisbane for the U/15 boys to take part in the Chantelle Cramb Cup. The U/19 boys qualified for the Australa- sian Naonals and will travel to Brisbane on the 10th November. School Futsal Program News by Mr Hedge The Futsal Program continues to grow in num-ber and success. The latest tournament was on the 20-21 October and was held with the Fed-eration of Australian Futsal organisation at

Coomera in Gold Coast in a stadium purpose built for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, a great experience for all the students involved.

This trip was a new experience for most of the squad and a very steep learning curve which will help with seeing the benefit of further de-velopment of skills.

Despite being outclassed in most games, all the students carried themselves with great dignity and applied themselves fully throughout every game regardless of the result.

Meeting and witnessing new schools is another facet of such trips away and seeing people of the same age performing at various levels shows the possibility of achievement through application and the opportunity to make new friends and connections.

On 28 October, we were in Brisbane for the U/15 boys to take part in the Chantelle Cramb Cup. The U/19 boys qualified for the Australa-sian Nationals and will travel to Brisbane on the 10th November.

Mullumbimby High is also featuring in selec-tions in high levels of both Futsal and Soccer.

Zahli Currie from year 12 was selected for the Australian futsal team to tour the USA next year and compete in the USA National Championships and she has accepted the offer. Zahli is the second girl from our school to achieve this hon-our.

Reese Donnelly has been successful in her trial for Gold Coast United for soccer and will be part of that team for next years National Premier League competition.

Raf Gorman-Coates achieved selection for Gold Coast City in the same competition as did Julian Rutherford. These teams are part of the second tier competition just below the A League and are the pathway to positions with professional clubs so these are amazing achievements from these stu-dents.

Two former students are also featuring in high level competi-tions: Krista Ruehe and Deanna Thompson.

Krista, who graduated Year 12 last year, continues to shine in futsal having been selected once more for the National Open Championships in Sydney in January. She is currently playing Premier League Futsal in Sydney with Sydney Phoenix, one of the strongest teams in that league. She trialled with Peninsu-la Power Women’s team in the National Premier League in Brisbane and has been asked to attend further trials.

Deanna Thompson, another former student, featured in na-tional media this week with Gold Coast United very excitedly announcing the signing of Deanna.

Congratulations to all.

Music Festival A reminder that the Mullumbimby Music Festival is on again this year from 16 to 19 November. Apart from being a wonderful community festival, the event is also our biggest P&C/school fundraiser. We are looking for people to help with either our Pizza stall or, if you have your RSA, selling tickets for the bar. To book a time slot, you need to go to http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and then enter the event code y357a. Everyone who does a shift will receive a one-day wristband for the festival. If you have never come along, this is a great day where you get to meet other par-ents, mix with the teachers in an informal setting and sample our gourmet wood fired pizzas.

Talking to Young People about Alcohol and Drugs It is best for education about alcohol and drugs to begin be-fore young people are exposed to personal decisions about their use. Young people who have accurate information, cop-ing and decision making skills and understand the issues, will be in a good position to make responsible decisions about alcohol and drugs. Parents are a powerful role model when it comes to drinking and attitudes to alcohol and other drugs. Take time to talk. Sitting down with the young person in your care and map-ping out a plan of action and what to say if they are offered drugs or alcohol can help equip them for the almost inevita-ble real event. Listen to what the young person in your fami-ly says about alcohol and drugs and follow up with a discus-sion. Take the opportunities when they come up during eve-ryday activities, for example:

When you pour a glass of alcohol

When alcohol or other drugs are mentioned on TV or other media

When using or giving out medicines

When your young person has an assignment on alcohol, smoking, medicines or other drugs.

It is important to understand that in some situations young people may take risks. Sitting down afterwards and helping them identify where things started to go wrong enables them to consider what they could do differently the next time they are faced with a similar situation. Australian Alcohol Guideline for Children and young people under 18 Not drinking alcohol is the safest option. For children under 15 Parents and carers are advised that children under 15 years of age are at the greatest risk of harm from drinking and that for this age group, not drinking is especially important. For Young people aged 15-18 years The safest option is to delay the initiation of drinking for as long as possible. Australian Alcohol Guidelines to reduce health risks from drinking alcohol.
