Course Name: Managing Supply Chain Operations Course Number: OMS 6056 Credits: 4 credits Prerequisites: MBA 6220 and MBA 6120, or permission of instructor Description In our increasingly complex world of outsourcing, global operations, and fast changing business environment, we see a new function emerging in many firms – that of the supply chain management function. Supply chain management involves the coordination across firm boundaries for materials, quality, new product development, market development, financial transactions, content delivery, and service delivery. Excellent operations are critical to improving supply chain performance in terms of agility, responsiveness, quality, efficiency, innovation, inventory, service, and profitability. This course examines a variety of supply chain operations including Strategic Sourcing and Supplier Management, Inventory Planning and Replenishment, Distribution Management, and Retail Operations. The course provides an understanding of the concepts, decisions, trade-offs, and models that you need to analyze, improve, and coordinate these operations. The class sessions will provide an environment for you to apply and deepen your understanding of these concepts in a variety of industry settings through case discussions, in- class exercises and competitions, guest speakers, and lectures. Objectives

Supply chain strategy – Identify when trade-offs are necessary (and not necessary) between cost, quality, flexibility, and service in order to develop a supply chain strategy.

Supply chain design – Design and improve supply chains aligned with the supply chain strategy.

Supply chain coordination – Design and structure supplier and channel partner relationships in order to improve supply chain performance.

Inventory management – Critically evaluate, analyze, and help implement inventory management tools and systems in the supply chain.

Supply chain tools – Know how to effectively use analytical tools for understanding and improving supply chain performance.

Global supply chain management – Analyze the costs, risks, and benefits for strategic global operations opportunities such as outsourcing and offshoring.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn both the significance of various supply chain practices as well as how to apply specific tools and concepts in a variety of industry settings to improve supply chain performance.
