A Relevant, Real-Time Resource
OMSI Responds to Earthquake DisasterScience on a Sphere (SOS) is a six-foot globe
that can be used to highlight the science behind
current events such as extreme weather and
earthquakes.
After the Japanese earthquake disaster, OMSI
educators used SOS to give live demonstrations
every two hours. Presentations highlighted the
location and magnitude of the quake, the path
of the tsunami moving across the Pacific Ocean,
and the predicted size and arrival times of
tsunami waves hitting the Oregon Coast.
Only hours after the Japanese earthquake and
tsunami, OMSI educators used Science on a
Sphere to give visitors a real-time look at the
environmental and human effects of the disaster.
It’s just one of the many ways that we’ve grown
to be a trusted and relevant source of current
information and analysis.
Our capacity as a catalyst for inquiry and
innovation is matched by our strength as an
organization. In the last year, we’ve improved
our financial reserves and provided more people
access to science education with events such
as Fred Meyer Free Days and record-setting
attendance for our OMSI After Dark adult
education program.
Our organizational health is a firm foundation for
our new strategic plan (see next page). The five-
year vision expands our initiatives in Energy
& the Environment, Innovation & Engineering,
and Health & Wellness. It maps our path as a
premier contributor to public education and
workforce development, and increases the depth
and breadth of our partnerships.
We’re emerging as a place where people can turn,
regardless of age or background, to understand
and engage in the science behind the important
issues and innovations of our time. Thank you
for helping us build a bright tomorrow!
Nancy Stueber, President
Our Strategic PlanWe want to be the Northwest’s premier public education resource in the field of Energy & the Environment, facilitating learning and catalyzing informed action toward a healthy and sustainable society.
We want to lay the groundwork for establishing ourselves as a trusted partner and educational resource in the areas of Health & Wellness and Innovation & Engineering.
We want to be a place (virtual and physical) that excites people—a place where people turn, regardless of age or background, to understand and be engaged in the science behind the important issues and innovations of our time.
We want to be the bridge that connects meaningful discoveries in academia and industry with the public.
We want to be an employer of choice attracting and retaining the best employees.
Energy & the Environment
The Pacific Northwest leads the nation in developing green technology and creating sustainable neighborhoods. OMSI’s Energy & the Environment initiative is working to interpret these advances to a wide public audience and plays an important role in helping people understand how individual choices are connected to global issues like climate change.
Solar CanopyWith SANYO North America Corporation, InSpec Group, and Portland General Electric, we installed a cutting-edge, solar electric vehicle charging station, one of the first of its kind in the nation.
renewable energyOur two-day wind power event with Iberdrola Renewables gave local families an opportunity to learn about the technology and science that go into developing wind energy. Our energy education efforts will be further enhanced with the opening of a bilingual exhibit in December 2012 that helps visitors understand solar, wind, and ocean energy technology.
SuStainabilityWe are developing an outreach program and bilingual exhibit focused on personal sustainable choices in transportation, energy conservation, food, and waste disposal. The program includes the stories of local residents who have a widespread positive impact in the community through their individual actions.
outreaCh In collaboration with Libraries of Eastern Oregon and with NASA funding, we developed programs using the cutting-edge educational tool, Magic Planet. This three-dimensional globe utilizes satellite data similar to Science on a Sphere and gives students in classrooms across the Pacific Northwest the opportunity to explore NASA-identified issues such as climate change, weather, and environmental hazards.
green exhibit DeSignOMSI’s LEED-inspired Green Exhibit Checklist is the industry’s first consistent standard to quickly evaluate an exhibit’s “green” impacts, including material choices, building techniques, and conservation.
reDuCing our FootprintWe walk the talk by reducing our environmental footprint and educating the public at the same time.
In the works:
A publicly accessible ecoroof and rain garden project allowing stormwater runoff to infiltrate the ground on-site.
Installations to generate our own energy and reduce landfill waste.
Heating and cooling improvements to reduce energy use.

Health & Wellness
New advancements in health science happen daily. How do we apply that knowledge to both personal and community health? With the generous support of Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, we developed and installed Eat Well, Play Well, an exhibit to help young families make informed choices about food and exercise.
With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), we’re creating a major new exhibit, Zoo In You, exploring the microscopic ecosystems of our eyes, nose, stomach, and skin. This exhibit will travel to science museums and health centers across the country and help bring the cutting-edge research of NIH’s Human Microbiome Project to a public audience.
OMSI also has a large impact beyond the museum walls, with an array of programs that educators deliver directly to school classrooms. This past year, we developed new programs that help students understand how scientists figure out how many calories are in the food we eat and how exercise affects all the systems of our bodies.
Innovation & Engineering
As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, OMSI is focused on providing educational resources for understanding the rapid pace of invention and innovation. This past year, a committed group of staff, trustees, and community members came together to determine how we can respond to needs in this area. This led to planning for several exciting projects, including a proposal to fund an innovative do-it-yourself creation and design center for one of OMSI’s exhibit halls, which will move forward during the next year.
We continue to strengthen community partnerships. The Brainstorm project was created with Portland Monthly as a way to identify and bring Oregon’s leading innovators to the public. Through featured profiles in Portland Monthly, panel discussions at OMSI’s Science Pub, and a digital exhibit at the museum, the project offered an unprecedented look at innovative thinking on a variety of topics: sustainability, software, manufacturing, design, music, and even religion.

Design Zone Takes Off
Traveling Exhibits launched the OMSI-designed
and OMSI-built Design Zone. Using hands-on
activities, the exhibition demonstrates how
mathematical and design concepts become real
world experiences in the arts, entertainment, and
extreme sports.
Design Zone helps make algebra accessible
to youth who lose the opportunity for science
and engineering careers because they are
intimidated by math. After its OMSI premiere,
the exhibition opened at the Museum of Science
and Industry in Tampa before moving on to
Seattle’s Pacific Science Center. Design Zone
opens at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in
February 2012, and will travel through the nation
for the next 8–10 years.

Planetarium Celebrates 60 YearsOMSI celebrated the planetarium’s 60th
anniversary in June 2010. As part of the
celebration, astronaut and former “OMSI kid”
Mike Barratt shared his experiences on the final
mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Visitors
of all ages turned out to meet a real astronaut
and share a bit of OMSI history!
We use the planetarium to create exciting, entertain-ing, and educational experiences that motivate people to explore our Universe. Few of us alive today will actu-ally venture into space, but our fascination remains universal. Space, our last frontier, inspires curiosity; presents a challenge to be met; and provides a rich opportunity for learning, development and fun.

Rising Star WinsInternational AwardNaomi Shah, a 2009 OMSI Rising Star, was
selected as one of 15 finalists worldwide in
the 2011 Google Science Fair, a prestigious
international competition that attracted over
7,500 entries. Naomi won the 15-16 age group
with her study of the effects of airquality on lungs,
particularly for people with asthma. Deeply
influenced by our special brand of informal
science education, Naomi describes how integral
OMSI has been to her development: “At 5, my
interest in science was sparked through camps
at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
and LEGO Robotics competitions.”
Thanks to your generous donation, I received the
chance of being a Rising Star. I was inspired to join
this program because of my interest in science
and it certainly was the best decision I made this
summer. Joining the Rising Stars program
increased my understanding of science and left
me with some lifelong skills.
