Held annually by the Organization’s

companies, the Young Partner Program

is designed for university students who

are completing their degrees or who have

recently graduated and seek constant

challenges and professional and personal

development. The idea is to identify and

invest in professional youth who have the

potential to become future leaders and

entrepreneurs. In 2010, Odebrecht had

more than 950 Young Partners and this

year, the number reached 1,220 in June.

With a duration of two years, Young

Partner is divided into two parts, each

lasting 12 months: the Introduction

to Culture Program, which covers the

study of the principles, concepts and

criteria of the Odebrecht Entrepreneurial

Technology, and the Young Builder

Program, which supports and accelerates

the participants’ training process,

promoting an ample overview of the

business phases.

During the program, the professionals

participate in meetings that gather

Young Partners from the same company

and/or from other business areas at the

Organization. In this article, Odebrecht

News will describe the meetings of the

youth from ETH, Odebrecht Angola,

Odebrecht Energia and Odebrecht Oil

and Gas.

ETH Bioenergia and the North

American company Amyris – a leading

company in fuels and renewable chemical

products – signed a memorandum of

understanding on October 20 to form a

partnership for the production of Biofene®

in Brazil. The chemical product, called

renewable farnesene, can serve as the raw

material for cosmetics, lubricants, aviation

fuel and diesel oil.

The agreement involves the production

of Biofene® at one of the ETH greenfield

units in the country, which will offer a

volume equivalent to an approximate

milling capacity of 2 million tons of

sugarcane per year.

ETH will control the partnership and

Amyris will have exclusive rights over

the product sales. The plan is to begin

the production by 2014. “ETH is the

leader in sugarcane ethanol production

in Brazil and through the partnership,

The agreement established represents

Amyris’ sixth production agreement at the

units distributed throughout three different

continents. The North American company

produces Biofene® in Brazil, Europe and

the United States through partnerships.

According to John Melo, the agreements

involve a total capacity of 15 million tons of

cane for the production of Biofene®.

According to José Carlos Grubisich,

Entrepreneurial Leader at ETH, innovation

is one of the company’s strategic pillars.

“Our commitment is to become leader in

the production of bioenergy from sugarcane

and high added value products made from

sugarcane, combining competitiveness and

sustainability.”

ETH generates clean and renewable

energy at its nine units and invests in

research to boost its productivity and

develop new applications for ethanol and

products derived from sugarcane. The

company has already invested R$ 6 billion

and is committed to investing an additional

R$ 2 billion, increasing the production

capacity of its units to the maximum. By

take the “A New Look at Plastic” Project to 1,577

public and private schools located all over Brazil.

The project is designed to raise educator and

student awareness as to the importance of topics

associated with conscious consumption and

sustainability.

The initiative is designed to encourage them

to propose solutions to current issues related to

the topics, such as the choice of what to consume,

the differences in the production chains when

it comes to ecoefficiency, combating the

inappropriate disposal of wastes and preventing

water and energy waste.

The schools already included were selected

from within the Faça Parte Institute network.

However, the project does not plan to stop with

Conscious Consumption Project Arrives to Brazilian Schoolsa guide with suggestions of activities to be

developed with the students and orientations

on how to participate.

There will be a selection of projects on two

levels: schools with good initiatives already

underway in 2011 and action projects for 2012.

The good initiatives in the area of education for

sustainability should be recorded in texts and

documented in video, photos or in any other

way the school deems appropriate. Those that

had their practices recognized will be included

in a debut video documentary.

The school that presents the most

innovative initiative for 2012 will choose a

group of representatives from the project to

visit the Braskem factory that produces plastic

made from sugarcane ethanol, located in

Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul. Furthermore, the

experience will be recorded in a video article,

which will be shown nationwide. “Our goal is

to orient the youth to consume in a different

way, seeking to increase the positive impacts

and reduce the negative ones,” said Jorge

Soto, Sustainable Development Director at

Braskem. The conscious consumer knows

that every attitude affects his or her own life,

surroundings, society, the economy and the

planet,” he said.

“Investing in education for conscious

consumption is essential for increasing the

number of citizens and consumers mobilized

for a more sustainable future,” said Helio

Mattar, Managing Director of Akatu. “Among the

merits of this initiative, I would further highlight

the universe of schools involved, because with

so many teachers and students participating, I

believe that the projects will even mobilize the

surrounding communities, extending beyond the

walls of the schools,” said Mattar.

“The youth that arrive here didn’t

have dreams or goals. Today, having

been trained, they work as monitors

and improve their knowledge

through practice.” This was the tone

of the speech given by Ariângelo dos

Santos Pereira, age 21, during the

inauguration ceremony for the “Build

Better” Professional Training Center

head office, held on October 13 in

Valença, Bahia.

A student from the second

group, the youth demonstrated his

satisfaction with the training he has

been receiving at the institution,

believing that this is the path toward

his development. “With the learning

I receive each day, I’m certain that I

will become a good civil construction

professional,” said Pereira.

The event programming included

the hoisting of the flag and Brazilian

national anthem, statements by

local authorities and partners and

the uncovering of the inauguration

plaque. “With Build Better, we found

new horizons for growth and job

opportunities for our youth,” said

Ramiro José de Queiroz, Mayor of

Valença.

For Emanuel Sávio, Coordinator of

the training center, the students do

not only acquire technical knowledge.

“They learn how to become true

citizens,” he said.

Christophe Houel, Leader Educator

at the center, emphasized: “I am

thrilled about making this dream

come true,” said Houel. “We now have

a physical space that will serve for

training and qualifying hundreds of

youth.”

Resident of Igrapiúna, Pedro Lopes

Júnior, age 22, reveals his activity after

completing the course as part of the

first group: “In addition to working in

the area of civil construction, I pass on

what I learn to family members and

residents of my city,” he said.

TRANSFORMING LIVES

“Build Better” is the result of a

Technical and Financial Cooperation

Brazilian National Development Bank

(BNDES) and Odebrecht Foundation,

which created the Bahia Southern

Lowlands Environmental Protection

Area Mosaic Integrated and Sustainable

Development Program (PDIS), of which the

center is part.

The agreement involves investments

in social, production, environment and

training actions for the Southern Lowlands

communities. BNDES invested R$ 2.3

million in “Build Better.”

During a visit to the region in August

of this year, Elvio Gaspar, Director of the

Credit and Social Inclusion Area at BNDES,

stated that the institution seeks to create

social inclusion alternatives by generating

work and income. “It is impressive to see

the effect that is occurring here,” said

Gaspar. “We need to document the results

as a way of offering [the initiative] to the

country,” he said.

unit at the Presidente Tancredo Neves

Rural Producers’ Cooperative (COOPATAN),

granted that the first payment, of

approximately R$ 740,000, has already

been released. Also at COOPATAN, the

project to rebuild the Flour Factory is ready

and awaiting the financial institution’s

approval.

The Bahia Southern Lowlands Heart of

created by its founder, Norberto Odebrecht.

Márcio Polidoro, Communication Director,

spoke on the topic “Education through Work,

the Spirit of Serving and the Entrepreneur’s

Training: Principles and Concepts of Odebrecht

Entrepreneurial Technology” and recalled the

history of the Odebrecht family and foundation of

the company in 1944.

Polidoro revealed that, at age 21, Norberto

Odebrecht established an agreement with the

foremen to recover the company created by his

father, Emílio. “Work was everything he could

offer,” said Polidoro. “The results were shared

among all. There were 12 suspended projects

that needed to be restarted and each foreman

would be responsible for negotiating the service,”

he explained. According to Polidoro, the founder

worked with a high degree of motivation, a sense

of responsibility and perseverance: “His vision is

to make the business survive to later grow and,

finally, perpetuate,” he said.

The Communication Director at Odebrecht

encouraged the entrepreneurs to develop their

ideas and businesses. “More than convincing, it is

necessary for you to direct your business at those

who need it. The main question should be: who

do I want to serve?, he said.

Odebrecht Case Presented to Inspire Entrepreneurs

For an audience with several youth, Márcio Polidoro also spoke about the partnership. “Every business must be a partnership. Working alone is not the solution for being a reference in the market,” he said

1970 edition and the 1999 re-publication,” said

Norberto Odebrecht.

The work covers topics such as

Entrepreneurialism, Delegation, Leadership,

Education through Work, Macrostructure

and Communication. “It is expected that

the publication will be useful for the entire

Organization, but especially for the young

leaders so that they, better understanding the

origins of TEO, can practice it and transmit it to

On the first day of training, in addition to the theoretical classes, the Members also participate in outdoor activities on leadership practices

To develop leaders and form

effective teams, Odebrecht

Energia created the My Team

Program, implemented in

October at the construction

site for the Santo Antônio

Hydroelectric Power Plant in

Porto Velho, Rondônia.

Each group receives training

for two days and uses practical

and theoretical activities to

develop and improve work

relations on the field. According

to Eduardo Marques, from

the People and Organization

area of Odebrecht Energia, the

program provides knowledge

on leadership practices and

interaction, allowing for the

exchange of information and

clarification of questions.

By the end of the month,

approximately 320 Members

will complete the program,

including leaders from the field

and service supervisors, divided

into eight groups with 40

Members each. Jabson Carlos

Gomes, Assembly Supervisor,

stated that he learned to better

plan tasks, help the team

overcome challenges and

understand each Member.

Mário Lúcio Pinheiro,

Contract Director at the

Construtor Santo Antônio

Consortium, pointed out that

the leader’s main challenge is to

form a confident, compliant and

winning team. “The work must

be continuous,” said Pinheiro.

“It’s not enough to just offer

the training. It is also necessary

to monitor them, learn more

about their day-to-day and their

difficulties,” he said.

Other modules will provide

sequence to the work and will

address topics such as feedback,

management tools and the

identification of sucessors.

The presence of Odebrecht Energia projects in

the Amazon region and the high rates of malaria

at the site were incentives for the company to

sponsor the 2011 edition of the Laveran & Deane

Seminar, promoted by the Oswaldo Cruz (IOC/

Fiocruz) Institute to discuss the disease.

The event was held from September 12-16

on the island Ilha Itacuruçá in Rio de Janeiro,

and gathered doctorate and master’s students

from universities and research centers in Brazil

and researchers from national and international

institutions. The participants debated projects and

the results of the tests under development.

Gustavo Capatti Cassiano, a doctorate student

in Genetics at the Paulista State University (UNESP),

highlighted the importance of the seminar: “For

a one-week period, we held intense discussions

on malaria, and had direct contact with the main

researchers from the area,” said Cassiano. “I want

to return to the event as a researcher, so that the

knowledge that I acquired can be passed on to

future students,” he said.

In 2010, Odebrecht Energia distributed 14,651

mosquito nettings in Porto Velho, Rondônia, where

it is building the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric

Power Plant. The initiative helped reduce the

figures of the disease in the city, which recorded

14,577 cases in 2010 and 9,941 in 2011, based on

a survey conducted by the Health Surveillance

Department.

explain the goal of the new media: “In Perfect Goal, we speak the ‘language’ of soccer, or in other word,

nothing about off-sides or red cards,” said Araújo. “The dialogue is focused on our ‘national team,’ the

discussion is the perfect goal and the winners are the Members and the community,” he said.

According to him, the project should likely have 2,000 Members working at the peak of the

construction work. “The focus will always be the same: to make the ‘winning goal’ in the areas of

deadline, quality, safety and the generation of wealth,” he said.
