    NOTES

YOUTH IS SERVED• Kansas has 37 true freshmen on its roster, which is the seventh-most in the country. Of the 37, 24 have appeared in at least one game this season. The 37 true freshmen are the most in the Big 12 and the fifth-most by a Power 5 program.• Kansas has 67 total underclassmen, accounting for 60.4% of its roster. That ranks Kansas as the 27th-youngest team in the country.• The Jayhawks currently have 83 players on their roster who have appeared in at least one game this season. Of the 83, 45 are underclassmen; meaning 54% of the players who have played this season for Kansas are underclassmen.• So far this season, 16 Jayhawks have made their first-career start, which ranks second in the Big 12 and tied for 12th nationally. True freshman wide receiver Luke Grimm became the 16th when he made his first start against Oklahoma.• A total of 35 players from Miles’ first two recruiting classes have already appeared in a game for Kansas. • Of the 35, 18 have started at least one game. • Miles signed 18 players in his first class in 2019 and 15 of those 18 have played in a game for the Jayhawks already. • So far this year, 20 true scholarship freshmen have played in at least one game this season. • Six true freshmen – Jalon Daniels, Karon Prunty, Daniel Hishaw Jr., Armaj Adams-Reed and Lawrence Arnold – have started at least one game. • Kansas has a freshman or a sophomore leading the team in each of the following categories:

o Leading tackler – Kenny Logan Jr., sophomoreo Leading interceptions – Kenny Logan Jr., sophomoreo Leading tackles-for-loss – Marcus Harris, redshirt freshmano Leading pass breakups – Karon Prunty, freshmano Leading fumble recoveries – Duece Mayberry, freshmano Leading rusher – Velton Gardner, sophomoreo Leading passer – Jalon Daniels, freshman

THE 24Here’s a look at the 24 true freshmen who have seen game action this season:• OL Armaj Adams-Reed• PK Tabor Allen• WR Lawrence Arnold• LB Taiwan Berryhill• WR Jordan Brown• OL Bryce Cabeldue• DL Kenean Caldwell• RB Jack Codwell• QB Jalon Daniels• CB Ra’Mello Dotson• WR Tristan Golightly• WR Luke Grimm• RB Daniel Hishaw Jr.• TE Will Huggins• OL Garrett Jones• CB Johnquai Lewis• CB Duece Mayberry• WR Steven McBride• WR Kyler Pearson• RB Amauri Pesek-Hickson• CB Karon Prunty• DL Jereme Robinson• DL Caleb Taylor• P Reis Vernon

TOUGH COMPETITION• The Jayhawks closed out their 2019 schedule by playing five ranked teams over their final seven weeks. Combine that with the four ranked opponents Kansas has faced this season and that means nine of the Jayhawks last 14 opponents have been ranked coming into the matchup. • During that span, the Jayhawks' have faced Oklahoma (ranked sixth and 19th) twice, Kansas State (22 and 20) twice, Oklahoma State (25 and 17) twice, Texas (15 and 21) twice, and Iowa State (23) once and Baylor (9) once.• The tough slate of ranked teams does not include Coastal Carolina, who is undefeated and ranked No. 15 in the country. • TCU will be the fourth unranked team Kansas has faced this season, equaling the number of ranked opponents the Jayhawks have seen.• This will be the first time since Oct. 17 (at West Virginia) the Jayhawks aren’t facing a ranked team.

LOGAN LOGGING PLAYS• One of the final members of Les Miles’ first recruiting class at Kansas, safety Kenny Logan Jr., has been a major contributor for the Jayhawks this season.• The younger brother of Brandon James, one of the most prolific kick returners in SEC history at Florida, Logan showed the return gene runs in the family. Logan scored on a 100-yard kickoff return against Iowa State. It was the first 100-yard kick return by a Jayhawk since 2002 and the fourth in school history.• Logan also logged an interception in the second half against the Cyclones. He is the only player in college football this season to have a kickoff return for a touchdown and an interception in the same game. In fact, he’s the first to do it nationally since Boise State’s Avery Williams did it in 2018.• Logan picked off another pass against Oklahoma to give him back-to-back games with an interception – the first two of his career.• He also had a pass breakup against Iowa State and is the first player to add that to the kick return touchdown and interception since Troy’s Marcus Jones did it in 2017.• Logan leads the team in tackles with 50, which ranks ninth in the conference. • Logan has 35 solo tackles on the year, which is third in the Big 12 Conference.• The sophomore from Florida had three solo stops and a pass breakup against Iowa State to go with his pick and kickoff return touchdown. Against Oklahoma, he had seven tackles and an interception.

PRUNTY ISLAND• True freshman cornerback Karon Prunty has had a brilliant start to his Kansas career. • A track & field star at I.C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, Prunty has started all seven games this season at cornerback. • He leads all freshmen nationally with nine pass breakups this season. He’s second in the Big 12 and tied for third nationally with that figure.• Prunty had a career-high three pass breakups against Oklahoma last time out. He had two earlier this season against West Virginia, and has at least one in every other game, with the exception of the Iowa State matchup. • The freshman also has 20 tackles on the season, including one for a loss. • Prunty and defensive lineman Caleb Sampson are the only two Kansas defensive players to have started all seven games this season.

MARCUS MAKING PLAYS• Redshirt freshmen defensive lineman Marcus Harris had 2 ½ tackles-for-loss at Kansas State. That came one game after he had three TFLs at West Virginia. Harris then added another TFL in his last game against Iowa State.• Harris has 6 ½ tackles-for-loss on the season, which is tied for the sixth-most by a freshman nationally. • A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Harris redshirted last year, but still logged playing time against Indiana State and Baylor. • He has played in six games this season, starting three. He missed the team’s most recent game against Oklahoma.• Only one freshman this season has totaled more than three tackles-for-loss in a game. Harris is tied with several others for second-most. • Harris leads the team with his 6 ½ tackles-for-loss and has 16 total tackles on the season.

DYNAMIC DUO• The Kansas wide receiving duo of seniors Andrew Parchment and Stephon Robinson Jr., found the end zone often in 2019, as the duo combined for 15 touchdowns, the most by a pair of KU wide receivers since 2009 (Dezmon Briscoe, Kerry Meier).• Despite Robinson missing the season-opener, Parchment found the end-zone on a 14-yard strike from quarterback Miles Kendrick this season. The touchdown was the eighth of his KU career. Parchment scored the ninth touchdown of his career Saturday against West Virginia, catching a 43-yard touchdown from Kendrick.• The Jayhawks are the only school in the Big 12 to return two of the top-five receivers, in terms of receiving yards in 2019. Parchment (2nd, 831 yards) and Robinson (5th, 727 yards) are the only duo to make up that list.• In his first season in the Crimson and Blue, Parchment caught 65 passes for 831 yards and 7 touchdowns, with his 831 yards ranking 13th in Kansas single-season history. Robinson hauled in 45 catches for 727 yards and 8 touchdowns, as his 727 yards ranks 18th in KU single-season history. Between the two, their combined 1,558 yards are the most since 2016 (Steven Sims Jr., LaQuvionte Gonzalez). • Parchment has at least one catch in 18 of the 19 career games he’s played in for Kansas. Parchment didn’t have a catch against Kansas State, snapping his streak of 16 straight games with a touchdown. He appeared to keep his streak alive when he caught a touchdown pass from Jalon Daniels. However, that touchdown was overturned after video replay.

Les Miles, a national championship-winning former coach at Louisiana State and Oklahoma State, was named the head coach of the University of Kansas football team on November 18, 2018.

KU earned its first victory of the Les Miles era on August 31, 2019, when the Jayhawks defeated Indiana State, 24-17. Miles would lead the Jayhawks to additional wins over Boston College and Texas Tech in 2019.

The Jayhawks saw several improved marks in 2019 under Miles, where KU averaged 377.3 yards per game on offense, the team’s highest output since 2009. In its win against Boston College, KU was named Reveal Suits National Team of the Week.

Miles led several Jayhawks to season honors in 2019, including Bryce Torneden being named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Two Jayhawks, Hakeem Adeniji and Azur Kamara, participated in the Reeses Senior Bowl. Adeniji was later drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Upon arriving in Lawrence, Miles had 142 victories, a BCS national championship, two SEC titles, 109 NFL Draft picks, including 21 First Round selections, in 35-plus years of college coaching, the most career wins of anyone who has coached football at Kansas in the modern era.

Prior to Kansas, Miles served as the head coach at LSU (2005-16), where his teams averaged 10 wins per year in his 11 full seasons. He led LSU to bowl games in each of those 11 seasons (winning seven), and won 42 games against Top-25 teams and 16 over Top-10 teams. Miles’ teams won 10 or more games seven times, reached the SEC title game three times (winning twice) and led LSU to five Top-10 and three Top-5 finishes.During his tenure at LSU, Miles coached an SEC-leading

69 NFL draft picks, 13 of them first-round selections. He coached 22 first-team All-Americans and 11 players who won national awards. He is the second-winningest coach in LSU history in overall wins (112) and SEC regular-season wins (63).In the classroom, more than 240 players earned degrees under Miles and during his tenure, LSU Football’s graduation rate ranked as high as No. 2 in the SEC multiple times. As part of LSU’s Project Graduation established in 2010, more than 30 players who had left school without a degree returned to earn their college diploma before Miles left in 2016. Nearly 190 LSU players were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll during Miles’ time there.

Miles went to LSU after a four-year tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State. The OSU program he took over in 2001 had registered only one winning season since 1988. The Cowboys went 4-7 his first year, then had three-straight winning seasons (8-5, 9-4, 7-5). He led OSU to three-straight bowl games, a first for the program since 1983-85.Miles’ four-year winning percentage of 57 percent is the best career winning percentage for an OSU coach since 1949. OSU was the only team in the nation to beat Oklahoma twice during Miles’ four-year tenure there.

Prior to OSU, Miles spent three years as tight-ends coach with the Dallas Cowboys (one divisional title, two playoff appearances). He went to Dallas after serving as offensive coordinator at OSU for three seasons (8-3, Alamo Bowl berth in 1997).

Miles served two stints (total of 10 seasons) as an assistant coach at Michigan, several of them under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler. During Miles’ second tenure there, from 1987-94, Michigan won 71 games, made eight-straight bowl appearances, including four Rose Bowls, and finished no lower than No. 21 in the final Associate Press national rankings.

Between tenures at Michigan, Miles spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Colorado.

Miles graduated from Michigan in 1976 with a degree in economics. He was a two-year football letterman, playing on two Big Ten championship teams. He earned all-state honors in football at Elyria High School in Ohio, where he also earned letters in baseball and wrestling.

Miles’ wife, Kathy, was a point guard at Central Michigan University and later an assistant basketball coach at Michigan. They have two daughters, Kathryn (nickname “Smacker”), a former swimmer at Texas and currently a TV sports personality and Macy, a youth softball pitching standout. They also have two sons, Manny, who played for the Jayhawks in 2019 and Ben, who won a high-school football state title in 2015 and is currently a fullback at KU.
