Calder, the then Superintendent of Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. Afterwards, a number of eminent Botanists like Prof. Shankar Puroshattam Agharkar, Prof. Paul Johannes Brühl, Dr. Kalipada Biswas, Prof. H.C. Ganguly, Prof. Param Nath Bhaduri, Prof. Provat Chandra Sarbadhikari, Prof. J.C. Sengupta, Prof. Ilabanto Banerjee, Prof. A. K. Sharma were appointed and the department flourished. Calcutta University Herbarium was established in the Department by Prof. S.P. Agharkar in 1920. The foundation of CUH is based on the specimens from Europe collected by Prof. Agharkar. Apart from this specimens from Nepal and other parts of the Himalayas and Sundarbans were also deposited in this herbarium. A representative collection of mosses was purchased from Vienna and was added to the herbarium by Professor Brühl. This is perhaps one of the best collections of mosses in India. The exsiccatae, Mugula's Cryptogams (Algae, Lichens and Mosses), and Hupke Herbarium Cecidologicum were also purchased and added to this herbarium by him. Recently, the 'Type Herbarium' is established with nearly 250 type specimens of names of Malayan as well as Indian plants. Throughout its journey CUH has already proved itself as one of the best taxonomy research centre in the country. th This year (2019) CUH is completing its 100 years journey. The 100 anniversary of CUH will be celebrated through the International Conference on plant science, “Algae, Fungi and Plants: Systematics to Applications (AFPSA)” on th th 24 and 25 January 2020.
