When an adult has a sudden cardiac arrest, his or her survival depends greatly on imme-diately getting CPR from someone nearby. But less than 1/3 of those people get that help. Most bystanders are worried they might do something wrong or make things worse or are uncomfortable about mouth-to-mouth with a stranger. That's why AHA has simplified things. When an adult suddenly collapses, trained or untrained bystanders should: • Call 9-1-1 • Push hard and fast in the center of the chest Studies show these two steps, called Hands-Only CPR, can be as effective as conven-tional CPR. (Interesting and helpful tip – if you can remember the BeeGee’s song “Stayin’ Alive” that is the rhythm used for chest compressions)
Certainly being officially trained and certified in CPR will help you respond with ap-propriate action to someone in distress. To locate your nearest training center call 1-877-AHA-4CPR or log on to www.americanheart.org/eccclassconnector When you open this screen in the bottom left is a box labeled “View scheduled classes.” If you keep that box checked and find only a few classes, try unchecking the box and getting a listing of all training facilities in your area. Many of them forget to list their schedule of classes and may be offering something in your area. Or if you do not need official certification, you can learn CPR in the comfort of your home with friends and family in about 20 minutes by using the new American Heart As-sociation’s “CPR Anytime” kit. It comes with an inflatable manikin (mini “Annie”), DVD instructional video and resource booklet for $35. It is an inexpensive tool to use with family groups or small work groups who want the skill of CPR but do not need of-ficial certification. Dear Parents, Your child will be bringing home information about the art show that we will have during International Night on March 13 from 6:30 – 8pm! Please send the RSVP back to school with your child to let us know if you would like to see your child’s artwork in a frame at the show. You are not obligated to pay for the frame, but we do need to know soon if you would like your child’s work to be framed and in the art show. 1st graders had a busy month in January! They made pinch pots that they will glaze in February, and they are making good use of the shoe boxes that all of you donated! They learned about Korean artist Do-Ho Suh who travels a lot as an artist, and often misses his home. So that he doesn’t get home-sick, he made an exact fabric replica of the home where he grew up so that he can take it with him every where he goes. 1st graders are making their portable homes from shoe boxes and other recycled materials!
2nd graders are working on illustrating their favorite scene from Mark Pfister’s book The Rainbow Fish, and they have also begun painting the ceramic tiles that they made of a Rain forest animal in the fall. In January, 3rd Graders worked on a special clay project that is an Em-erson tradition. 4th graders learned that artists use art to raise awareness about social issues. Each
student is creating a poster about a social issue she or he ca-res about.
In January, 5th graders are painting personal maps that show their own world view as well as their personal journeys in life. As always, feel free to stop by any time to say hello! Best wishes, Katie Pearce
Reflections Reception A reception for the Reflection participants will be
held on February, 15th at 6:00pm. The General PTA meeting will follow around 7pm.
