NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORTJournal of Businesswww.spokanejournal.com
‘The Wretched’ — Wonderfully RedoneA blockbuster novel for over 150 years comes vividly to life in award-winning
screenwriter Andrew Davies’ multi-layered retelling of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. This enthralling television event (not a musical) airs in six episodes on MASTERPIECE, Sundays at 8 pm/9 Mtn, April 14 – May 19.
Dominic West (The Affair, The Wire) stars as Jean Valjean, the most famous fugitive in literature, with David Oyelowo (Selma, Small Island) as his relentless pursuer, Javert. Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply; Love, Rosie) appears as the tragic seamstress, Fantine; Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals) plays her adolescent daughter, Cosette; Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and Adeel Akhtar (Unforgotten) are Cosette’s cruel overseers, the Thénardiers; and Josh O’Connor (The Durrells in Corfu) is the student and reluctant revolutionary Marius, who falls in love with Cosette at first sight.
Joining the extensive cast are David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter) as Monsieur Gillenormand and Sir Derek Jacobi (Gladiator, Last Tango in Halifax) as the kindly Bishop of Digne.
The first English translation of Les Misérables in 1862 left the French title (meaning “the wretched” or “the dispossessed”) in place. And so it has been known in English ever since, through countless printed editions, plays, musicals, and movies. This latest version promises to be one of the best yet.

From the Board…PSSST… Have you heard that KSPS has started 2019 with a splash of EXCELLENCE?! KSPS won the
NETA (National Educational Telecommunications Association) Award in the Instructional Media in the Teacher Resource category. The awards were presented at a red-carpet gala event in January in Salt Lake City. The award is in recognition of NETA member stations’ achievements in community engagement, promotion, instructional media and content production.
KSPS’s efforts were lead by Bukola Breczinski, KSPS Education Director, and her two Gonzaga University interns, Rosemary Colon and Ali Asiri. Bukola and team segmented KSPS documentaries and created video-supported lesson plans. Examples of the history lessons covered topics like Native American history and Japanese American incarceration during WWII. The ready-to-go lesson plans are being used by teachers nationwide. The award-winning educational resources are now available FREE to educators — and to everyone — at https://www.ksps.org/education .
The lesson plans are part of KSPS’ Lifelong Learning goal by providing on-air, online and multimedia programs that entertain, engage and educate to enrich all the communities we serve. Check it out! What do you want to learn?

Doing What Comes Naturally…There are several channels that bring you wonders of
our natural world these days; but there is still just one source that stands head-and-shoulders above the rest in terms of quality, content and the overwhelming legacy of nature programming. That source — of course — is Public Television. PBS has been doing it so long, so well, that presenting nature has become…well…second-nature.
That’s no exception this year, as winter begins to finally recede and we look forward to spring bursting forth with a flurry of flowered, furred and feathered activity. Nature has a real-time experience planned for us that captures the change of seasons in all of its wild splendor — from iconic locations across America. American Spring LIVE will be a three-night event, airing Monday, April 29, Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1 at 7 pm each evening.
“Nature throws a party every year, and it’s called spring. It is the most active time in the natural world for plant and animals, from birth and rebirth to migrations to pollination,” said Nature executive producer Fred Kaufman. “In addition to witnessing incredible wonders, the goal of Nature: American Spring LIVE is to inspire people to go outside and get involved with science. Everyone can play a part in our natural world.”
Each episode is built around a central theme that reveals how the new season triggers extraordinary biological change. Besides the “Series Central” venue of Yosemite National Park, additional tentative live locations include the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Florida’s Everglades, San Francisco, a sheep farm in Maine and Texas’ Frio Bat Cave and Gulf Coast. Like ZZ Top, nature and springtime are…Nationwide.

Member Challenge Fund UpdateThank you to the members who responded to our recent Member Challenge Fund
letter. Your contributions will be used during our March Membership Campaign to encourage new members to join. During select "pledge breaks," we challenge viewers to make a gift to support KSPS. Then, each contribution by a new member is matched dollar-for-dollar by gifts in the Member Challenge Fund. So if a new member makes a gift of $60, it’s immediately matched by using gifts in the Member Challenge Fund. Your positive impact is doubled.
If you gave as part of the Member Challenge Fund, watch the March Membership Campaign to see your dollars put to work — and hear your name mentioned on the air. Thank you for making Public Television possible!
Why the March Membership Campaign MattersAs a KSPS Member, you know better than anyone why KSPS Public Television matters in your life. You value the programs
so much, you’ve taken the step that only 1-in-10 viewers takes: you’ve put your financial backing behind them.
March 2-17 is our annual Spring Membership Campaign. On weekends and weeknights, we’ll take breaks between (and sometimes during) the programs to invite our viewers to support KSPS — and our mission to educate, inspire and enrich all the communities we serve. Pledge drives are not the only way we raise funds, nor are they the largest source. We leave no stone unturned, bringing in support from businesses, grantors, renewing members, government and many other sources.
Yet pledge drives remain the most efficient way to recruit new supporters because they reach those who care most about the station: our viewers.
Our hope is to inspire those other 9-in-10 viewers to join you in your generous support — to put their financial backing behind: the world’s best dramas, performances and art; children’s programs that foster a love of learning; scientific exploration and travel programs that open worlds to everyone; and video resources for educators to use in their important work.
This is why you support KSPS; and I hope you’re proud of the vital part you play in making the mission possible. So when you see those pledge breaks in March, think of them as invitations to your friends and fellow viewers to join you in your support of KSPS. You really do make it happen! Thank you.

Leadership Spokane Tours KSPS
Members of the Leadership Spokane Class of 2019 spent a couple of hours at KSPS learning about the station and our mission. We thank these leaders for their dedication to serve our communities.
About the Enclosed KSPS Annual ReportStapled to your Prevue is the 2018 KSPS Annual Report. While this is a fiduciary obligation for nonprofit organizations, it is so much more than that to us at KSPS. We view it as an opportunity to give you a rare "insider's look" at both the inner workings and the very real outward vitality of the station and all that was accomplished in the past year.
2018 brought a lot of challenges for KSPS; but it also brought a lot of rewards…and affirmation that our mission is still relevant and that we are staying true to that mission. Please take the time to review KSPS 2018 with us and be proud of what YOU made possible.
Endowment Fund Update…Your gifts to the KSPS Endowment are having a terrific impact on our bottom line! The Endowment gift to the KSPS
community of viewers was $34,376 in the 2017-18 fiscal year. Donations to the Endowment are a real vote of confidence in our mission:
KSPS provides programs and events that entertain, engage and educate to enrich all the communities we serve.
Our efforts to build the Endowment balance are ongoing. We are committed to growing this fund to provide excellence in public media to future generations. For information about great ways you can help, contact Sandra Kernerman, CFRE — 509.443.7717 or [email protected]
Of Mountaintops, Translators and KSPS…While a large number of our members receive KSPS via cable, satellite, wireless or Internet-based systems, there is an
increasing number of viewers who get free, over-the-air broadcast of KSPS programming via our main transmitter or one of several, outlying community translators.
In recent years, the KSPS engineering staff has been on an ambitious, aggressive updating schedule to make the equipment at these mountaintop sites more robust and dependable than ever; and the effort has been paying off.
Mountains, adverse weather and tough access being what they are, though, occasionally the unthinkable happens and a KSPS site goes off the air during the harshest winter conditions. We have a resourceful engineering team, however, which defies the odds by gaining access anyway and fixing the problem. Our thanks go out to them, for braving these conditions to bring us our favorite shows.
KSPS General Manager Gary Stokes (l) gets a taste of the glamorous, "deep-powder" life with KSPS engineers Mike Peterson and Shannon Wright.
