ON THE GO

One of Belfast’s many charms is
that its busiest downtown block
ends, quite literally, at the ocean.
But until this year, pedestrian
access to the picturesque shoreline
was limited.
The new Belfast Harbor Walk allows resi-dents and visitors to stroll, bike or jog the half-mile stretch along the downtown coast, from the Armistice footbridge, where one can fish while staring out to sea, to Steam-boat Landing Park, home to many festivals, activities, weddings, events and concerts. Along the way, stop to park your bike on one of the new racks, grab a local beer and some BBQ and have a picnic lunch, do a little
shopping at a gallery or boutique, see what’s going on at The Boathouse, play some Frisbee or fly a kite in the park, rest for a moment on a bench, and take home memories of the view with your camera.
This long-awaited $1.5 million project ensures that Belfast’s harbor will remain accessible for everyone to enjoy for gen-erations to come. Headed by City Planner Wayne Marshall, the harbor walk was begun, in part, because of the development of the new Front Street Shipyard. Funded by the city itself, along with state and federal agencies, the walk officially opened in November 2013. Make use of it next time you’re downtown!

BELFAST COMMON – An open, harbor-side park that slopes toward the water with picnic tables and the best views. Great for kids and dogs. Home to the Celtic Music Festival, fairs and gatherings. Traditional end-point of the Trek Across Maine bike ride.
STEAMBOAT LANDING – Just below the Common, right on the water’s edge, Steamboat Landing is an 800-foot shore-line walk with a playing field, appointed with a large community rental space, The Boathouse, that hosts parties, meetings and events like the Belfast Harborfest.
HERITAGE PARK – Another great waterfront park in the heart of downtown, with picnic areas and north Passagassawakeag River views. Site of special events such as Arts in the Park and Belfast Summer Nights concerts.
BELFAST HARBOR CITY LANDING – Public boat launch at the bottom of Main Street with easy access to shorefront parks. A short stroll uphill to many fine restaurants, art galleries, farmer’s market, movie the-ater, pubs and shopping.
THE FOOTBRIDGE – Dedicated as a memorial recognizing those who died in World War I, the Armistice Bridge offers a leisurely way to cross the river to East Belfast by foot or bike with terrific views of town. A perfect and popular family stroll.
