In September of 2016, London commemorated the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of

London by burning the whole city down all over again—this time in miniature. Spectators

packed the banks of the River Thames to watch as a 394-foot wooden replica of 17th-century

London was set alight on a barge Sunday night, the CBC reports. The 1666 blaze, which

started in a baker's shop, destroyed the homes of 70,000 of the city's population of 80,000 as

it burned out of control for four days. The burning of the model, designed by US artist David Best, was the climax of

the city's "London's Burning" festival.*

Later this year- 2017, we at Calvary Presbyterian Church of Enumclaw, will begin an anniversary celebration of the

CPC’s founding, 125 years ago! A committee is forming and they are brainstorming ideas and already have a few

things on the calendar (so stay tuned!) If you would have any interest in helping with a slate of activities to

commemorate the life of CPC, contact the church office (360-825-2830) or Jan Dursteler.

But what is an anniversary all about? What do we have to remember, and God forbid, do we need to set a scale

model of the church on fire?! (That is NOT in the plans!)

Anniversaries are milestones. A time to remember…to look back…to reflect…and one hopes, to appreciate and to

learn from the past.

Anniversaries are also a time to look forward—to consider what it means to be the church, the body of Christ on the

corner of Porter and Marshall in Enumclaw, for the next year and 124 more! God has a plan and a purpose for

Calvary, and that is bigger than you and me. It is more longstanding than our present generation, as there are those

who came before us. They sacrificed, served and gave of themselves, as the Body of Christ in this community.

We are here today. Our call is to faithful obedience in the present—sharing the Good News now, so that CPC will

continue to have a vital mission and ministry in the years ahead!

Now about that fire…I’ve been pastor of a church that experienced a real, honest to goodness fire, and it was not fun.

I do not recommend one!

But, I wonder if God does not want to set us “on fire” in another way.

It is my hope and prayer that we—individually and corporately—can “get fired up” by the Holy Spirit in order to

GROW…

Deeper into the Word and Worship,

Wider in our Outreach, and

Expand our impact for Christ farther through our Mission and Ministry—both locally and beyond!

God is calling us to greater, more intimate discipleship in the year ahead!

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting excited just thinking about it!

See you in Worship,

Pastor Lynell

In January 2016 the Deacons began a new parish system with each

Deacon taking a portion of the church membership including newcomers

and frequent visitors in worship. Our vision is to have an on-going

connection with a small group, honoring birthdays, anniversaries, and

just checking in throughout the year. One Deacon sends care cards to

those in the congregation who are ill, need a little cheery note, or sympathy for the loss of a loved one.

Another provides a flower to be placed in memory or celebrating new babies during worship services.

Beginning in September, two Deacons assisted Pastor Cindy with Communion during worship at Highpoint

Village. Calvary has several members who are residents and attend the services there each month. This will

be on-going quarterly throughout the year.

Deacons prepare the elements for monthly Communion services at Calvary and provides breakfast at the

two Faith in Action Sundays during the year.

As part of Deacon ministry is the weekly contact with those in our congregation who are unable to attend

worship by delivering printed bulletins and sermons to their place of residence, either in their home,

Enumclaw Rehabilitation Center, or Cascade Caregivers Adult Family Home.

We have distributed funds to needy people in our church and community using Plateau Outreach Ministries

as our support agency as well as Enumclaw Helping Hand. We gave donations to POM, Rainier Foothills

Wellness Foundation for their drug addiction and mental health programs, the Mom and Me Mobile Medical

Van, and Church World Service Blanket Card project.

A fun activity for Christmas was making evergreen centerpieces together at Cathy Matson’s farm and

delivering them to our Calvary seniors.

This month we will have a guest from Valley Cities Mental Health to explain their program and possible

partnership.

Christmas decorations will be put away on Saturday, January 7th beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Please join the Worship and Church Life Ministry Teams in the Sanctuary. Your help is

greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

We are in need of a Calvary liaison to assist with the Full Bellies Community

meal once a month on Thursday afternoon from 3:45 to around 7 PM. Duties

include helping with set up, clean up, and making sure the stove and lights are

off and the doors are locked. If you have an interest please contact the church

office 825-3820, Martha Blodgett 825-5883, or Cherie Murchie 825-1239.

Thanks!

CALVARY CALLER Page 4

Oh, the New Year! As I sit here writing this, I have the New Year on my mind. All the things that are coming

in January, February, March. It seems like we are always looking forward to prepare for what is coming next.

At least I try to. If I don’t, I am bound to miss something and that would not be good. It’s important to look

to the next day, the next month, the next step, the next event. However, it is also important to spend time

in today.

We talk to the youth about working to ensure they spend time with the Lord. Talk to him, pray to him, and

sing with him. Their answer is often, like mine, “I try but…” Living in a moment without rushing through it is

difficult. We acknowledge the Lord in passing, as we go through our days. We remember him when we

survive a difficult situation or scrape through what could have been a bad day. It takes time and effort, to

stop what you are doing, put the phone away, pull yourself out of the chaos that surrounds us, and just be.

Often we find ourselves making an effort, and then having that moment slip away by a phone call, a child

asking for help, a text, or something else.

So what can we do? We can make a New Year’s resolution to pray more. How well do those New Years’

resolutions go? How long do they last? Not long usually. We try, we fail, we give up, we move on. It’s life.

It’s okay.

Many of our youth, don’t have a fully developed faith yet. Many are just beginning their faith journey. It’s

hard enough to talk to God when you already have a relationship with him, let alone when you are just

beginning to get to know him. So this is what we tell our youth. God is our friend. He loves you. At your

best and at your worst, God is so in love with you, he just wants to be close to you. So sit, and watch. Look

at the world around you. Take a moment to notice, the trees, the wind, the rain. The breath you have, how

your fingers move, your eyes blink. Take a deep breath and just be. You will see Him, you will feel Him. He

is around you in everything. If you take that moment, one day at a time, you will come into relationship with

God, because you are spending time, with him.

Time, which keeps ticking away, even in the New Year. So much to do, so many people around. Try. Just try,

to take that one brief moment, and find yourself in tune with God. It will bring you JOY. In the New Year.

New Year’s Resolution – Read the Bible Daily

What does an ideal winter’s evening look like to you? To me it would be curling up in front of

the fire with a good book and soft music playing in the background. It’s so easy to get lost in a

story of fiction, mystery, and make-believe. A truly good book invites the reader to become

one of the characters. But how many of those books will you remember? Will you recall the

characters names? The setting? The title? The author’s name?

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “I cannot remember the books I’ve read any more than the meals I have eaten;

even so, they have made me.” If this is true, the book we should be reading every day to sustain us is the Bi-

ble. That is the book that I want to influence who I am. The Bible is the book that guides us to handle each

and every situation in our daily lives. In order to follow God’s will, we must read it. It is required reading to

be a truly good Christian—at least in my opinion.

It’s no secret that some of the passages are difficult to understand. Three hints to help decipher the words

that you read are prayer, meditation, and re-read. Pray—ask God—to help you to understand. Take time to

ponder and meditate about the verses you’ve read. And finally, read it again and again—perhaps try reading

more than one version of the Bible.

Isaiah 34:16 says, “Seek ye out the Book of the Lord, and read.” What better New Year’s Resolution could

there be? Resolve to read your Bible daily in 2017.

Thoughts from Calvary’s Librarian, Marilynn White

In October the Initial Meeting of the 125th Calvary Anniversary Jubilee Committee met at the home of Eva Dietz, Church Life Elder. With input from different members of Calvary we discussed some of the ways in which Calvary will celebrate together beginning in September 2017 and ending with a “Grand Finale” in September 2018. The actual date when 24 settlers met in the local schoolhouse to organize a Presbyterian church was September 12, 1892 led by Rev. George F. Whitworth, Chairman of the Home Mission Committee of the Presbytery

of Puget Sound and Rev. John R. Thompson, from the Presbytery of Olympia. The committee chair is Jane Dursteler, as representative of Church Life Ministry Team, as well as members-at-large who will form and facilitate four sub-committees: Cathy Matson - Memorials; Cherie Murchie - History; Bette Nicholson - Directory and Cookbook; Sue Vannatter - Worship If anyone has an interest specific to the 4 sub-committees or any ideas on activities to be included during Calvary‘s anniversary year contact Jane Dursteler, [email protected] or 360-825-1806. Our Anniversary Celebration is based upon the season of Jubilee in Leviticus 25 starting with verse 8: To consecrate, celebrate and worship together, thanking God for all the goodness He has provided for our ministry throughout 125 years: “A Legacy of Worshiping God and Serving Others” in His Name.

SUMMER PARTNERSHIPS WITH WHITWORTH EKKLESIA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

While summer seems like “long ago, and far away”, we are already making plans for summer! Yes, the

Christian Education Ministry Team in partnership with the Session and Staff has made application to

Whitworth University for two Summer interns, through the Ekklesia Fellowship program, under the auspices

of the Office of Church Engagement! Basically this is an opportunity for churches like Calvary to host a

Whitworth student for ten weeks during the summer and offer them “on the job training” in ministry. We

were blessed last year to have Emily Larsen, who is now a senior Theology major at Whitworth, join us. This

year we are applying for two interns. Why two? Good question!

Two interns equal twice the fun, and twice the learning opportunities-both for the students and for us!

One will be directly involved in assisting Erin Luchi in the Youth programs. The second will be a “pastoral

intern”, shadowing our two pastors, assisting in worship and worship planning, as well as in visitation and

being exposed to other aspects of pastoral ministry.

The cost? Each intern receives a stipend of $3000. For the summer. (One third will be from the Margaret

Martin Memorial, one third from a Seattle Presbytery grant, and one third is covered by Whitworth!)

Housing/Hosting the two interns for the ten weeks is Calvary’s responsibility. Please be praying and

considering this unique opportunity! Gerri and Garrett Van Beek hosted Emily last summer and it was a very

positive experience. If you have any questions, please direct them to Pastor Lynell, via the church office at

(360) 825-3820.

Please be in prayer also for the students as they are presently in the “matching” process, that God will be

guiding us all!

FAITH IN ACTION MINISTRY December 11, 2016 Dear Friends, For over seven years, Calvary Presbyterian Church of Enumclaw, Washington and UCCP Bonbon Church of Cagayan de Oro, Philippines (CDO) have partnered to bring educational opportunities, clothing, food, and medical resources to the impoverished population living in the community of CDO. This international partnership began when the Quilo family, formerly of CDO, moved to Enumclaw in 1988 and became members of Calvary. Over the years, the Quilos shared with the congregation the concerns they had for their former neighbors who were struggling to feed their families, pay for even basic medical care, and pay for the education of their children. The people of Calvary took these needs to heart and helped to collect and send many crates of clothing, bedding, personal care items and school materials to the people at Bonbon Church, who would then distribute those items, along with food, to people in need. Calvary has continued to prioritize funding for this outreach and has sponsored mission trips from the U.S. to the Philippines; and, in turn, the Bonbon Church has worked to build relationships with their community and has helped plan and facilitate projects. Eventually the Faith in Action Ministry (a non-profit 501c3) was formed and includes leadership in both countries. Currently, 43 students are receiving scholarships for school and each month Bonbon serves meals to up to 50 individuals. Clothing, linens, toiletries and food are shared with a home for the aged and developmentally disabled; and bonding, encouraging friendships have been formed with people who have few, if any visitors. The Faith in Action Ministry is making an impact, but there is still great need. In August 2017 a team of 12 people, most who work in healthcare and construction, will travel from Enumclaw to CDO and, together with their counterparts from Bonbon, plan to complete the following projects: Health and Wellness Exams for 150 people, initial prescriptions for conditions such as diabetes and high blood

pressure, and arrangements made for follow up care with local doctors Community Hygiene and Illness Prevention education Distribution of school supplies for 60 children Repairs and improvements to the Bonbon Church facility to expand the outreach programs, including repairs to

the bathrooms and parsonage, and building a children’s center. We would be honored to have you join in this partnership through your financial and prayer support. Please call or email if you have any questions and thank you for your donation. Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon the Lord

shall renew their strength; they shall mount up

with wings as eagles...

From The Eagle’s Nest

As we look ahead at Calvary and anticipate our 125th anniversary, it has been suggested that we “think big”

and come up with some goals that are in line with moving forward into our future. In keeping with that

idea, I would like to report to you about a new group that has formed here in Enumclaw related to

affordable housing.

The Affordable Housing Coalition is a group of people from local government, local area churches and

POM. The goal is to come up with a proposal to increase affordable housing on the plateau. Specifically it is

designed to provide more affordable housing for low income seniors. The longer term goal would be to

look at housing options for all low income persons and for homeless people.

At the second meeting of the coalition, the guest speaker was David Alger, retired from Associated

Ministries, who is a housing expert. He outlined procedures that a group such as ours would need to

undertake in order to accomplish our goal. He advised us to narrow our focus and do a small project well

before expanding to providing low cost housing for all low income persons on the plateau. Thus, the focus

has been narrowed to finding low cost housing options for low income seniors. That alone is a large

project.

The following are some of the planning steps that would need to be undertaken:

Establish the coalition as a non-profit organization.

Identify foundations that have been successful with similar projects.

Plan for start-up funds to purchase land or to take over an existing space.

Hire a consultant familiar with this kind of project to help guide the process.

The coalition has made a commitment to meet through March 2017. The next task is to come up with a

statement that defines the coalition: its focus, its goals and commitments. The next meeting is Monday,

January 9, 2017 at noon in the City Council Chambers. This is an open meeting and I am sure others would

be welcome.

As this coalition moves along, maybe Calvary would like to participate in some way. This might be a project

that would fit with our goal to do something special as part of our 125th anniversary. I will report back

again after the January meeting.
