In this annual report, we share the summary impact data from our past year fighting hunger in Connecticut. Your support is what makes our work possible. We also hope to share with you some of what drives us to improving nutritional outcomes for people in need. Your continued support keeps us on the move toward a hunger free Connecticut.

Last year we distributed 24.7 million pounds of food — enough to provide more than 20.3 million meals. This is possible only with the support of food industry partners, financial donations from businesses and individuals, and significant effort by volunteers and staff who help to move an average of nearly 67,000 pounds of food each day.

Nutritious, healthful food is our primary weapon in the battle against hunger. The nearly 700 local programs that form the “last mile” of our distribution network are where that food reaches the 144,000 neighbors in need who visit each month. The community pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and residential or day programs serving adults and children located throughout our six-county service area are supplemented by the Connecticut Food Bank direct distribution through the Mobile Pantry, GROW Up With Good Nutrition, Kids’ BackPack program, and a monthly food distribution to seniors.

While we continue to hear that the economy is improving, sadly the proverbial “rising tide” has not lifted every boat.

In Connecticut, food insecurity figures remained essentially unchanged. And many people who have re-entered the workforce are holding down jobs that pay less than past employment and offer no benefits. People are working one or more jobs and still unable to make ends meet.

Last year, we completed a review of our mission, vision, and strategic plan. We reaffirmed our mission to provide nutritious food to people in need but moved beyond distributing food with the development of our Hunger to Health initiative.

Studies show the link between low income, food insecurity, and poor health. Beyond the fact that all people deserve access to adequate food and to live a full and healthy life, we also see the societal costs of hunger and poor health in higher medical costs and lost productivity. Hunger to Health is a deepening of our commitment to provide nutritious food to people in need. We are implementing strategies to source more nutritious foods and to get more of that food out quickly and broadly across our network. And we are forming partnerships with health providers to provide people access to both the foods and the health information and services they need.

Thank you for the support you provide to help us reach this pivotal time in our work. With your ongoing commitment, we will continue to build a stronger, healthier future for all the people of our state.

Hunger to Health is a deepening of our commitment to provide nutritious food to people in need.

Donations from individuals, businesses, foundations, and government grants provide

food and funds for our work.

We distribute food to nearly 700 partner programs that serve an average of more than 144,000

people each month.

We source, store, package, and transport food. On

average, 30% of our food is nutritious, fresh produce.

Food is provided to the 1 in 8 people — children, families, and seniors — in

Connecticut who are hungry.

How We Do It

Page 3: ON THE MOVE...Pantry locations operated by the food bank. Whitaker said volunteering is a tradition with the family. “We all volunteer for many things,” she said, noting that in

Because food insecurity can mean missed meals and meals with insufficient nutrition, people with low income often suffer health consequences along with hunger. Food insecure individuals have increased risk for chronic diseases and don’t have adequate access to healthy food to help manage their symptoms. The struggle with health-related illnesses also impacts a person’s employment ability, educational status, and the quality and coverage of their health care.

The consequences in Connecticut are clear. According to the most recent Hunger in America study of food pantry clients in Connecticut, 23% of households that access our network have members with no health insurance. More than half of food pantry shoppers have household members with high blood pressure. And 32% of households accessing our network have a family member diagnosed with diabetes. Low income and lack of access to food have dangerous implications.

We have long understood this and sought to increase the nutritional quality of the food we distribute. Our 2020 Strategic Action plan takes our current work on food nutrition one step further by building partnerships to improve health and health access for the people we serve.

Eight years ago, in partnership with the Rudd Center for Obesity and Food Policy at the University of Connecticut, we developed the Index of Nutritional Quality (INQ) metric, which helped place us in the top 10% of Feeding America’s 200 national food banks for distributing quality healthy, nutritious food. We are now working on a new distribution policy that will modify and

simplify the INQ metric to make it easier for partner agencies to understand the best foods to order to meet the health needs of their clients. This policy will also help food donors become more knowledgeable about what types of donated foods we will accept.

We are working with health care organizations to help create links between Connecticut Food Bank programs and community health care services. We have formed a Hunger to Health Working Group that brings together 35 health care providers with state food bank leaders. The collaboration is yielding early gains that include Mobile Pantry sites in collaboration with community health organizations, helping their clients access food they need to stay healthy, and helping us to bring more people seeking food into contact with potential health resources.

Along with health care organization partnerships, we are piloting five health project programs serving the Greater New Haven area. These programs will include diabetic nutrition education, health screenings, and healthy food access training.

And construction of a training and production kitchen in our new Bridgeport location will offer the opportunity to provide meal preparation classes and host nutrition education workshops for partner agencies and their clients.

Hunger to Health

Our 2020 Strategic Action plan takes our current work on food nutrition one step further by building partnerships to improve health and health access for the people we serve.

A multi-generational family is committed to helping their neighbors in need. The Whitakers, O’Donnells, Murphys, and Thomases are a close-knit family of siblings, parents, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. They spend a lot of time together, and some of that time includes volunteering together.

Joan Whitaker and her family volunteer at a Connecticut Food Bank Mobile Pantry in Naugatuck, operated in cooperation with the Naugatuck Partnership for Children. The site has consistently been one of the busiest Mobile Pantry locations operated by the food bank.

Whitaker said volunteering is a tradition with the family. “We all volunteer for many things,” she said, noting that in the group pictured

at the Mobile Pantry are people who volunteer at a church-based food bank and other community programs, and that she also gives time to an organization that encourages organ donation.“When my cousins and I were growing up, my mom used to tell us that if we have something and someone needs, share. We can help, and there’s always someone that needs help.”

Volunteers like this family are the energy that powers our network of member agencies and our own work at the Connecticut Food Bank. Last year, more than 5,200 volunteers gave more than 23,000 hours of time worth more than $707,000 to help feed neighbors in need.

Your SupportIndividuals, businesses, foundations, community organizations, and food growers last year donated more than $40.6 million in food and funds to the Connecticut Food Bank, helping us to distribute enough food to provide more than 20 million meals.

Volunteers donated more than $707,000 worth of time, helping to collect, sort, package, and distribute food. They also gave their skills with research, data entry, reception work, and many other office projects.

Your gifts of treasure and time are the driving force behind the Connecticut Food Bank.

We can help, and there’s always someone that needs help.

The NeedMore than 414,000 people in Connecticut struggle with hunger each year. Theycome from all backgrounds and live in every community. They are children; they are elderly; they are disabled; they are working one or more jobs and still not able to make ends meet; they are our neighbors.

More than 117,000 Connecticut children — one in six — do not know where their next meal will come from.

Working people are especially hard-hit: 43% of people in Connecticut who are food insecure are not eligible for federal food assistance because their households earn above the eligibility level, yet they are unable to afford basics like adequate food for their families.

The WorkPeople: More than 144,000 people each month of last year got help from a Connecticut Food Bank member program or Connecticut Food Bank service.

Programs: Nearly 700 community-based programs distributed food products and other resources provided by the Connecticut Food Bank.

Food: We distributed more than 24.7 million pounds of food — enough to provide more than 20.3 million meals. More than 30% of the food distributed was fresh produce and healthy proteins.

“ Each month more than 56,000 people in Fairfield County receive food from the Connecticut Food Bank network. We are able to provide easier access for programs that partner with us to provide food to people in need.

10 | Connecticut Food Bank | 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT

In late spring, the Connecticut Food Bank opened its Bridgeport warehouse facility, at 229 Mountain Grove Street. Relocating from Fairfield brought us closer to the large number of member agencies serving the Greater Bridgeport area.

Each month more than 56,000 people in Fairfield County receive food from the Connecticut Food Bank network. “We are able to provide easier access for programs that partner with us to provide food to people in need,” said Connecticut Food Bank CEO Bernie Beaudreau. “This location puts us

in reach of more programs and offers many improvements in our operations.”

While similar in square footage to its former location, the Bridgeport warehouse is on a single level. Our former location in Fairfield was on two levels, making loading, storing, and moving food products much less efficient.

The Bridgeport facility is approximately 12,000 square feet and includes 1,200 square feet of refrigerated and frozen food storage, allowing the Connecticut Food Bank to provide more sought-after fresh

foods to local programs. The building is fully accessible to people of all abilities and offers increased space for meetings and volunteer projects.

We are increasing the volunteer projects available in the Bridgeport warehouse, where we prepare both Kids’ BackPack meal packages and the monthly boxes distributed through our Senior Feeding Program.

Information about volunteer opportunities at either our Bridgeport or Wallingford locations is available at ctfoodbank.org/volunteer.
