Welcome to the 2012 Golf Season and the third year of our “On the Tee” digital magazine! This is the third year of our “On the Tee” digital magazine and it was just the tip of the iceberg for the statewide expansion of “On the Tee” and our multi-media coverage of golf including the PGA, LPGA, IPGA, IGA, college, high school, and “Hack Nation” amateur golf events for the 2012 season. In addition to the digital magazine we have expanded our radio reach as we enter our 11th year with the radio show on KRNT 1350 and across the Iowa Sports Connection Radio Network reaching all of the clubhouses “From the Missouri to the Mississippi.” “On the Tee’s” TV production reaches the majority of Iowa with WHO TV 13.2 Mediacom channels 113, and 246 in central Iowa and now KCRG 9.2 and Mediacom 109 in the Northeastern portion of Iowa. The ‘On the Tee” radio and TV productions also stream on “iowasportsconnection.com”, “Ustream.TV”, “KCRG.com”, and “whotv.com. Our sophisticated fans can follow our progress on Facebook as we have the 21st century media covered. However, the “HackNation” doesn’t quite grasp the new technology, and I’m proud to say that I am the leader of this technologically dysfunctional group of hacks! . This multi-media stable of television, digital magazine, e-mail newsletters and state wide radio makes “On the Tee” the states leader in covering golf year round. In 2012 we are dedicated to all of the golf inside Iowa and worldwide as we our the portal to our partners at the IGA, IPGA, The Golf Channel, The Des Moines Register and Rick Brown along with “iowagolf.com”. The 2012 PGA season has a “New” theme to it with

the list of winners and young guns dominating the leader boards. Masters Champ Bubba Watson leads the list of “where did he come from?” along with Jhonny Vegas, Gary Woodland, Michael Bradley, and Brendan Steele. Now you would have to be a Golf Channel junkie to know of any of those players as we are in the studio of “On the Tee”. Judd Gibb, Jay Horton, and I log more hours watching Golf Channel than most individuals sleep. Speaking of the Golf Channel, we are blessed to have a superb relationship with the worldwide leader in golf coverage and the “Stat Man” Alex Micelli who donned the Drake Bulldog colors for a couple of semesters and now is always nattily attired in his bow tie join us several time a month on the air. We will continue to bring national guests to the airwaves as well as the state’s best golfers at all levels. In closing, I thank you for opening up this 1st edition of 2012 of the “On the Tee” magazine and remind you to get out to the course this year and support our partner courses were hammered all year long in 2011 by course crushing weather. We need our Iowa golf courses and partners in business to have a fantastic 2012! Have a great month! Keep it in the short grass, hit ‘em straight! And God Bless America!

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Led by a school-record performance by junior Ben Juffer, the Kansas State men’s golf team secured the Wyoming Cowboy Classic title after shooting a 1-over par 281 on Tuesday at the par 70, 7,133-yard north course of the Talking Stick Golf Club. The tournament title was the 30th in program history and the first since winning the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate in the fall of 2009. The Wildcats finished the three-round event at 14-under par 826, two strokes ahead of second-place Colorado and three shots ahead of San Diego, which finished third. The Wildcats tied the school record for lowest 54-hole score, matching their 826 score at the 2007 Pacific Invitational. Juffer won the event in a playoff over Colorado State’s Mike Wuertz, notching the classic’s individual title. A product of West Des Moines, Iowa, Juffer carded a 3-under par 67 on Tuesday to bring his two-day total to a Kansas State 54-hole score record of 12-under par 198 (65-66-67). The junior, who captured the 29th individual championship in school history, eclipsed Ben Kern’s three-round record of 199 at the 2006 ASU Thunderbird Invitational as he became just the second player in school history to shoot under 200 over three rounds. With the individual title, he surpassed his previous career-best finish set at the 2011 Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic where he placed 10th. “I am really excited for our guys,” head coach Tim Norris said. “It was nice to see them put in the work and to see the results. Today was the same as the first two rounds. The guys played pretty solid with no big mistakes. It was obviously fun to watch. Ben birdied his last hole from four feet where he was head to head

with another golfer. You do not get a chance to win a lot in golf – there is a lot of losing in this sport. Savor it while you can.” K-State’s Curtis Yonke completed Tuesday’s round at 2-under par 68 to finish in a tie for ninth. His two-day total of 5-under par 205 marked a new a career-low 54-hole score, and he secured his second top-10 finish of the season. Kyle Weldon shot a 4-over par 74 during the final round, bringing his three-round total to 2-over par 212 to end in a tie for 43rd place. Kyle Smell carded a third-round score of 2-over par 72, shooting a 5-over par 215 over two days. The Wildcats’ David Klaudt finished the day shooting a 5-over par 75, for a 9-over par 219 performance to tie for 83rd. “We obviously have a big task in front of us in a very competitive conference championship,” Norris said. “But a little confidence will go a long way in this game. We will come down off the clouds, get to work next week and see what we can do down in Texas.” The Wildcats will try to use the tournament title as momentum heading into the 2012 Big 12 Championship, which is slated for April 27-29, at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.

The University of Iowa men’s golf team picked up its eighth tournament title under head coach Mark Hankins, capturing the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment championship Sunday afternoon at Finkbine Golf Course. Iowa’s winning score of 840 (-24) is a Hawkeye Invitational 54-hole record and the third lowest mark in school history. Conditions were much tougher at Finkbine Sunday, with winds gusting to over 30 miles per hour throughout the day. With all competitors on the course during the shotgun start format, the Hawkeyes led Iowa State by one stroke with approximately three holes left to play. Freshman Joseph Winslow birdied his final two holes and sophomore Steven Ihm drained a birdie on his final hole to help seal the win. “The goal out here for us is to play as well as we can individually,” Winslow said. “To do that, you have to go out there and play the best you can on every hole. I wasn’t too happy after not playing 18 the way I wanted to and came around to holes one and two and really played them both really solidly. I knew it was going to be close, not knowing exactly where we were at though. I knew I needed to play the best I could and I just went out there and did it.” ”First of all, the numbers were records,” Hankins said. “We shot a 274 yesterday which is 14-under par for the round, which is amazing. Chris Brant with a 66, Barrett with a 68 and some other guys pitching in there nicely, and finishing with a total of 24-under. Finkbine was in awesome shape. It was great for us to come out with a lead after day one and hold it for day two after the bad weather. I was very pleased with the guys.”

Iowa Sets Tournament Record at Hawkeye InviteUniversity of Iowa HawkeyeSports.com

“Every golf course is different,” Hankins added. “Sometimes even par is a low number, so we figured out on day one that the winds were really low, the greens were a bit softer than normal and the scores were good. The guys had to adapt to that and did a nice job, especially in the second round. They played really well.”Senior Chris Brant finished runner-up at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational with a three-round total of 208 (-8), which is the third-best 54-hole score in program history. Brant tallied nine pars on the front nine to shoot an even 36. He birdied 15, but finished with two bogeys to shoot a 73 (+1) in the final round. Iowa State’s Nate McCoy won the individual title with a Hawkeye Invitational record 202 (-14).”I was a little disappointed about today,” Brant said. “I played well all week so no regrets, but I just couldn’t get it going today. I finished at eight-under on the week and I’m not too disappointed about that. Nate [McCoy] played well and it would have been tough to catch him today.” Senior Barrett Kelpin also finished inside the top five, carding a 211 (-5) to tie for fifth place. Kelpin added a 71 (-1) in the final round of play. He started with birdies on holes 1 and 2, bogeyed the fifth and bounced back with birdies on 6 and 7. A bogey on hole 8 brought his front nine mark to 34. Kelpin then bogeyed 10, but birdied 15. After a bogey on 17 and a par on 18, Kelpin carded a 37 on the back nine for his 71. Sophomore Ian Vandersee finished tied for seventh with a 212 (-4). He also shot a final round 71 (-1). Vandersee double-bogeyed the third hole, but drained three birdies to make the turn at -1. He dropped two

more birdies on 10 and 11, but bogeyed 14 and 15. Vandersee finished with four-consecutive pars for his 71.Vandersee led the field of 60 competitors in birdies, carding 16 in three rounds of play. Freshman Joseph Winslow finished his first home tournament with a 10th place finish at 214 (-2), including a final round tally of 70 (-2). Winslow started with three-straight pars and got into red numbers with a birdie on seven. He fired seven-straight pars before a birdie on the par-5 15th. Winslow bogeyed 18 before his crucial birdies on holes 1 and 2. Sophomore Steven Ihm finished inside the top-15, tying for 11th place with an even par 216. He carded an even par 72 in the final round. Ihm started with a bogey and made five pars in a row before another bogey on hole 9. Ihm followed a bogey on 12 with one of five eagles carded on hole 15 during the day. He backed up the eagle with four pars before the clutch birdie on his final hole. Ihm had the second most pars (39) among competitors on the weekend. Five Iowa golfers also competed as individuals at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational.Senior Brad George recorded the highest individual finish of his Hawkeye career, placing fourth with the fifth-best 54-hole mark in school history at 210 (-6). George carded a 73 (+1) in the final round, tallying two bogeys and seven pars on the back, along with one birdie and eight pars on the front. “My round today was more of a struggle than yesterday, more challenging, mostly due to the conditions,” George said. “I kind of had a hard time with my putting to start off, but I managed to keep

it together after being two over after seven holes. I managed to battle back and shoot one under par coming in, which was good. “As far as the whole tournament, I’m pretty pleased with how I came in and prepared for this tournament; my ball striking was good, and overall my putting was good, so just overall pleased.” Senior Jed Dirksen finished tied for 21st with a 219 (+3) after shooting a 76 (+4) Sunday. Dirksen had four birdies and eight bogeys on the day. Freshman Brian Bullington improved 15 spots on Sunday, finishing tied for 21st with a 219 (+3). He shot a 71 (-1) in the final round, registering a 34 (-2) on the back nine. Senior Jared Walahoski finished 33rd with a 224 (+8), carding a 74 (+2) in the final round. Walahoski recorded two birdies on the day on holes 11 and 13. Sophomore Ryan Marks rounded out Iowa’s individual scoring in a tie for 36th place at 224 (+8). He shot a final round 74 (+2), shooting 35 (-1) on the front nine. The Hawkeyes will travel to West Lafayette, Ind., next weekend to compete in the Boilermaker Invitational. Live scoring for action on Saturday and Sunday can be found at golfstat.com. “We did play well this weekend,” Brant said. “Twenty-something under par is good; especially with weather like today. I think it’s just going to be a catapult for the rest of the year. Obviously, getting our first win this week is important as we go into postseason. Next week at Purdue is going to be vital.” “Today was a tougher golf course so we had to re-adjust to that and even par was good,” Hankins said. “Overall, we’re learning and playing well. We’ve got some confidence with a second place finish at LSU and first place this weekend. We go to Purdue and we’ll try to adapt to that golf course as quickly as we can.”

Iowa State senior golfer Nate McCoy was awarded for his outstanding play last week, earning Golfweek’s National Collegiate Player of the Week honors. McCoy, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, won his third career tournament title in record-setting fashion on Sunday, capturing medalist honors at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. McCoy carded rounds of 68-65-69 for a 202 total, breaking the tournament and school record en route to a six-shot victory. McCoy, who also won the Rees Jones Invitational in the fall, eclipsed the old 54-hole scoring mark by two shots thanks to a second-round 65 where he recorded a pair of eagles. It marks the first time in Iowa State history where a Cyclone shot 7-under in 18 holes. The Cyclone star is in the midst of one of the finest seasons in school history. In 11 tournaments this year, McCoy has finished in the top-10 seven times. His 71.36 scoring average is on pace to set the single-season school-record and he moved up to No. 53 in the Golfweek individual national rankings. McCoy, who is a virtual lock to earn a spot at the NCAA Regional as an individual, is trying to get his team back into the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 1999. Iowa State, which is currently ranked 54th nationally by Golfweek, has one tournament left before the postseason, April 27-29 at the Big 12 Championships in Houston, Texas.

The Viking women’s golf team continued its winning streak at the Mount Mercy Spring Invitational over the weekend. The ladies were nine strokes behind Wartburg going into the second day of the competition, but were the more consistent team on Sunday to overtake the Knights for the win. GV shot a two-day two-round total of 666 (333-333) at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course in Marion, eight strokes in front of runner-up Wartburg (324-350=674). Conference opponent Ashford was third (685). Grand View was the top finisher among the five MCC schools that competed in the meet. Reigning two-time MCC Player of the Week freshman Kenzie Rottinghaus (Urbandale, Iowa) didn’t disappoint, bringing home her second individual title in the past three tournaments. Rottinghaus tallied a two-day score of 155 (77-78). Junior Amalia Mejia (Colombia, South America) came in tied for second place with a 160 (81-79). The Vikings have picked just the right time to peak as they into the MCC Championships next weekend, April 20-21, at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside. The winner of the MCC Championships earns an automatic bid to the NAIA Championships held May 15-18 in Greeneville, Tenn.

Three Iowa State golfers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 women’s golf team, announced by the Big 12 Conference this morning. Senior Kristin Paulson and sophomores Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks received the honor for the 37th-ranked Cyclones. Paulson earned first-team honors for the third time in her career. Paulson is a senior in materials engineering. A grade point average of 3.2 or higher and participation in 60 percent of the team’s scheduled contests in 2011-12 is required to qualify for the team. Paulson, an Ottumwa, Iowa native, has competed in every tournament this season. She is ranked 194th nationally by Golfstat and helped lead the team to a second place finish at the Mountain View Collegiate with a career-low 218. Her 75.59 stroke average is tied for second on the team with On-iam. Thammaraks, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, leads the team in stroke average at 75.29. The sophomore is ranked 151st nationally by Golfstat and leads the team with three top-10 finishes. On-iam shares Paulson’s national rank by Golfstat (194) and season stroke average of 75.59. The sophomore has competed in all nine tournaments, posting a career-low 216 at the Central District Invitational en route to a third-place finish. A total of 56 student-athletes were named to the team.

A LOOK BACK AT ZACH JOHNSON’S MASTERS WIN FIVE YEARS AGOContributed By: Mike Mahon Des Moines Register

I would like to share with you an interesting sidebar that happened on this exact same date — April 8 Easter Sunday, five years ago — when former Drake golfer Zach Johnson captured the 2007 Masters. I just finished enjoying a late Easter dinner at my sister’s home in West Des Moines, gathering with my brother and relatives to watch the final round. After Johnson holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th to extend his lead, my cell phone rang. It was a sports columnist from the Atlanta Journal Constitution calling from the media workroom at the Augusta National Golf Club. “Hey, Mike, it looks like your guy, Zach, has a chance to win the Masters. I’m trying to track down some information on his college career at Drake. ...” Little did I know that would begin a whirlwind string of calls from national media that would finally end 48 hours later on a Tuesday afternoon. It didn’t matter how these sportswriters found out my cell phone number, I was reveling in the moment. I visualized myself in Augusta despite the 1,060-mile difference. Sportswriters, radio and TV sportscasters from around the country were requesting all sorts of information on Johnson’s Drake career. I had to track down Zach’s former college teammates for interviews as well as his coach — Jamie Bermel —who had moved on to Colorado State. The national media had a hard time believing me when I told them Johnson was the No. 3 golfer on the Drake team during his career which saw the Bulldogs earn berths in the 1996, 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournaments. Here’s hoping the magic of 2007 returns today.Mike Mahon was Drake’s sports information director at the time Johnson won the Masters.

Zach Johnson at The MastersSUNDAY AT THE MASTERS: IOWAN ZACH JOHNSON’S DAY SHOWS HOW GOLF CAN COME DOWN TO INCHESContributed By: Matt Rybaltowski Des Moines Register

Zach Johnson stood on the 16th green at Augusta National Golf Club when the roars reverberated from nearby. Immediately, he knew something momentous had occurred on the second hole. He was right — Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa had just recorded the first double eagle on the hole in Masters history with a 4-iron from roughly 260 yards.

It was then Johnson became a victim of the cruel fates of Augusta National. Johnson nearly holed a long birdie from the right fringe, but had an 8-foot putt coming back and left with a bogey. His drive on the par-4 No. 17 hit the top of a tree and found the secondary cut. When the 2007 Masters champion slightly misread a par putt on the final hole of the tournament, he closed with three straight bogeys.

“He hit a good (tee) shot on 16 that just broke 5 yards too far,” said Aaron Baddeley, Johnson’s playing partner. “On 17, he hit the tree off the tee which makes a really tough second shot and 18 is always difficult.” Suddenly, a round that appeared certain to end in red figures became an even par 72. The Cedar Rapids native finished the four-day tournament at 3-over par 291. “I’m never satisfied with that sort of finish, especially my last three holes,” Johnson said. “That’s not how you want to end a golf tournament.” The former Drake golfer lamented his decision making during the closing stretch. Johnson said he used the wrong clubs on the tee shot on No. 16 and the approach on No. 17. He also felt he misjudged a chip on No. 18 that left him with a slippery putt. “We didn’t club properly on the last three holes,” Johnson said.

Entering the day 12 shots behind leader Peter Hanson, Johnson employed a riskier approach than he did over the first three rounds and was rewarded for his aggressiveness. He found the right fairway bunker with his tee shot on the par-5 No. 2, but carded a birdie when he sunk a 30-foot downhill putt from the fringe. Two holes later, Johnson stuck his tee shot on the par-3, 240 yard No. 4 three feet from the hole. With a challenging front-center pin position in between two bunkers, the hole played second-most difficult on the course on Sunday. Phil Mickelson, for instance, hit the left grandstand with his tee shot and left with a crippling triple-bogey. “That’s one of the hardest holes on the course,” Johnson said. After a bogey on the par-4, No. 9, Johnson responded with a steady stretch through Amen Corner. He recorded three straight pars starting on No. 10 and added birdies on Nos. 13 and 15 — the two par 5s on the back nine. Johnson laid up on both holes, just as he did when he won the Green Jacket in 2007. Johnson entered the final round tied for first in the field in driving accuracy and hit 47 of 56 fairways (83.9 percent) during the tournament. Struggles with his long irons and short game at times prevented him from contending for the lead. The 37-year old hit only 58.3 percent of greens in regulation and averaged 28.25 putts per round. “There’s certainly some positives — there’s no question about it,” Johnson said. “I don’t think I got a whole lot out of what I had yesterday and I left a lot out there today.” Johnson is scheduled to play at next week’s RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C., before taking a short break over the next several weeks. The world’s No. 44 ranked golfer must remain in the top 50 to receive an exemption for the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco on June 14-17. The setup includes the par-5, 670 yard No. 16 – the longest hole in U.S. Open history. “I’m sure it’s going to be a brutal test,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be at sea-level and usually June in San Francisco is never a great month. “It’s probably going to be cooler temperatures and the ball won’t carry as far.”

THE PRINCIPAL CHARITY CLASSIC IS THE #1 STOP ON CHAMPIONS TOUR, PLAYERS SAYContributed By: Principal Charity Classic

The Champions Tour has announced the best tournaments of the 2010 Champions Tour season. The Principal Charity Classic presented by Wells Fargoreceived the “Players Award” for the 2010 tournament, ranking it the number one stop for Champions Tour professionals. The announcement was made recently by Champions Tour President, Mike Stevens, at the Champions Tour Tournament Association annual awards dinner in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl. “The Principal Charity Classic has positioned itself as a ‘can’t miss’ event for players, sponsors and spectators, resulting in excellent galleries and record contributions to local charities,” said Stevens. World Golf Hall of Fame member, Nick Price earned his second victory of the season during The Principal Charity Classic at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa. “Hands down, The Principal Charity Classic deserves this award. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the time that I have spent at the tournament. The hospitality and warm welcome we receive is second to none,” said Price. “We have consistently received great feedback from the players, caddies and spouses about Glen Oaks Country Club, the Des Moines community and the world-class treatment they receive here,” said Jamie Alt, tournament director. “Continuing to attract a strong

The Principal Charity Classic 2012 playing field helps the bottom line of the tournament — children’s charities.” In 2009, the tournament was named ‘Best Managed Event’ on the Tour, an award which recognized community support, attendance, charitable impact and on-site presentation. Over the last four years, The Principal Charity Classic has raised $2.3 million for local children’s charities. The PGA Tour and a recent Iowa State University study estimated the 2010 tournament generated an economic impact of $20.8 million for the region, including increased business for area hotels, restaurants, shopping establishments and other entertainment venues. The event also showcases Des Moines to a national television audience and to more than 70 PGA Champions Tour golfers.
