SUNDAY 17 AUGUST (Matt. 14: 14 - 22)

It is particularly significant that the "bread of /ife " (John 6 : 35) , who "is always consumed and never exhausted" (Liturgy of Chrysostom) . who preached that "man shall not live by bread alone " (Luke 4 : 4), is today preoccupied with the feeding of a multitude, with some loaves and two fish . There is here an undoubled affirmation of worldly and social needs on the part of Christ who cares for humanity, heals its wounds, dresses its nakedness and consoles its pain - ultimately who resurrects its dead. How often we restrict our mission, Christianity and even God Himself. 10 spiritual affairs, to Church services, to various works of charity. We turn everywhere in order to turn away from our responsibility to stand beside our suffering neighbour, to sulfer with, symphalhlse and support our every fellow human being . We forget that Christ is revealed through the specific person that we face at a specific time and with a specific need. If this need is not served - whether by prayer or by bread - God Himsel f is neglected (Malt . 25 : 40, 45). No person suffering or hungry should leave us without some consolation : "They need not depart " (v. 16) .

The paradox is that while we believe that we have the God-given command to preach, to "act" as Christians and assit from the heights of our spi rituality those of our brethren who have not come 10 know Christ (or, more correctly. who have not come to know Christ as we th ink thai we know Him!) . while we are so full of ourselves and of our virtue thai we identify with Christ. when we confront an issueof life and death for Ihe world, we propose our insufficiency "in all humility": "We only have here five loaves and two fishes" (v . 17) . We forget Ihal we are called to give nothing but what belongs to God, what Christ offered the world, namely love. Furthermore we fo rget Ihat the little ''we do have" is not ours but from God and belongs to our neighbour. "Take heed therefore, how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given: and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have" (Matt. 8 : 18) . Christ then does not expect miracles from us; He will perform miracles, if and when Ihey are needed. Christ does not demand slrange signs from us but simply surrender in love to our neighbour.

Of cou rse it is always easy to offer a general and abstrac t so lution . One must, however. seek a personal solution, a so lution that commences from oneself and involves oneself. If you are complaining about pain , do someth ing to erad icate it: il you are worr ied about the hypocrisy around you, then pro test with your sincerity : if you are concerned about injustice in the world , then revolt with your love. For in this world . too. are there "desert places" (v. 13) and many needs (v. 15) ; but at the same time the miraculous feeding of the multitudes can occur here, if we deposit ou r life befo re God : "Bring them here to me" (v. 18) . In the hands of God: "they did all eat, and were filled; and they look up the fragments that remained ..... (v. 20). Fr J. C.

A PRAYER To the Holy and Righteous Virgin Paraskevi

o holy Virgin Paraskevi. who art glorious among the Saints before the Throne of Almighty God, whom you have pleased exceedingly with your prayer and life: we ferventl y ask you to hear our petitions and to intercede with God that He may strengthen us with His grace and enable us to follow your example in the way of truth and salvation. While you were here on earth, you heard the call from the Lord and you responded to it gladly, thereby winning the crown of righteousness that has been prepared for all who love the Lord . May we also, hear the call from the same Lord and respond to it joyfully by turning away from sin, confusion and despair. For in you, 0 holy Paraskevi, we see the likeness of our Maker, the living spirit of the Gospel, the very foundation of our Orthodox Faith . You have become the temple of God, the glory of the Martyrs, the fellow-citizen of the Angels . May your pure life be always a source of inspiration, a model for our life in Christ and an encouragement for our struggle to abide in Him. Your holy relics, before which we all stand in reverence, are indeed a proof of your living presence in our midst. May they be for us a source of divine power and an instrument of healing; and on the day of the Resurrection of all at the Second Coming of Christ, may we be worthy, by God's grace, to join you in meeting our Lord and Saviour in His heavenly kingdom. For our earnest desire, that satisfies the inn~rmu,t part of our whole being, is to live for ever with Him, with the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen .

THEOLOGY AND LIFE (e)

In the two previous parts of this article concerning the relationship between theology and life, we tried to indicate briefly the correct analogies which regulate responsibility In God of the members of the Church, both in their entirety as well as individually.

Having reminded the guiding role of the Shepherds and Teachers among the faithful, we must now give several concrete examples as to how the faithful generally incarnate in their daily life and concern the basic truths of Faith which at first sight appear as theoretical fantasies for the uninitiated.

(a) The Trinitarian Dogma It is only natural that we commence with this dogma

because it constitutes the most original and characteristic teaching that radically distinguishes Christianity from all other religions but which at the same time gives Christianity its incomparable breadth, universality and definitiveness.

The simp le faithful may not always be in a position to conceive - spiritually, not intellectually - the deeper theological significance of the Trinitarian dogma, yet it permeates their entire life. In other words, perhaps they cannot conceive with full clarity the decisive significance of our understanding of God, the world and man for our belief that God is Trinitarian and consubstantial in the three Divine Persons, yet they surely feel within themselves that such a teaching expresses an original and incomparable dynamism that inundates the entire life and creation. The god of Philosophy, for instance, the "first mover" of Aristotle, cannot express the dynamism of life. For this philosophical god remains an impersonal, friendless, distant and unsocial element. The god of Aristotle is essentially a "Narcissus" since he gives the first push for the world to move but remains "motionless", namely indifferent, impossible, irrelevant, in a word: unmoved by the further destiny and fate 01 the world. Such a god is a mechanical source of motion, not living creativity and providence for salvation .

On the contrary, the Trinitarian God is a ceaseless circulation and can celebration of love and life primarily within the Trinity. The divine Persons of the Holy Trinity are continually and ceaselessly involved in a deeper "interpenetration ", in an unbreakable and unending mutual embrace of boundless love, that proves that there is absolutely no difference in essence and will among them , but which also safeguards the unconfused integrity and honour of each Person . The three Persons, therefore, are inseparably united and un confusedly interpenetrated in their inner life. But in their "outward" relationship also, the Persons of the Holy Trinity remain united and unconfused, so that their every act is common. Thus the Father creates out of nothing through the Son and In the Holy Spirit.

The entire course of creation, from beginning to the end of ages, is an "economy", a "household ordering" of the world which the Persons of the Holy Trinity arrange in succession in order to lead it to salvation . Thus we have in the first instance the economy of the Father, in the second instance the economy of the Son and in the third the economy of the Holy Sp irit. The Son reveals the Father to the world, and the Spirit reveals the Son. Yet even when the Son alone is incarnated, He is not separated from the Father and the Spirit , nor again when the Spirit is sent is it separated from the Father and the Son .

82

The immediate practical consequences for life from such a Trinitarian theology is the conviction that the world in its entirety is a creation of the love and providence of God. Such a wo rld may historically and temporally be separated into the world before and after Christ but this does not mean that the two historical phases are mutually excluded. Christian s can neither reject nor underestimate what God has created from nothing through the Son in the Holy Spirit. The world before and even apart from Christ does not cease having in its roots, from the moment of creation ex nlhllo, the very Word of God as its foundation , This is why even above the darkness and primordial chaos of creation "the spirit of God moved" (Gen. 1 : 2). We shall see, therefore, the entire creation of God inseparable and united in its original sacredness, because God has declared that all its elements are "very good" (Gen . 1 : 31) . It could not be otherwise, since God created everything "out of nothing", namely as He wished!

Unless we see things in this impartial breadth, then -perhaps without perceiving it - we arbitrarily separate not only creation but also the very essence of God, as if one God created the world and another God comes in order to save it!

It is obvious that with the same breadth of mind wemust also see the boundaries of the Church. If all creation is the property of God, then it is self-evident that all this creation must enter the "ark" of salvation , that is it must be transformed into incorruptibility. All creation must be embodied in the Church. Because Christ founded the Church only as the "recapitulation of all" (Eph. 1 : 10) . Now the definitions of the Church given by the theologians are usually restricted to its designation as "communion by grace between God and people", rarely or occasionally including the angels, too, in this communion!

Such definitions, however, have an a priori anthropomonistic one-sidedness and do not, therefore, correspond to reality . Whereas, according to authentic data from Holy Scripture and Tradition we shou ld perhaps give the following very general definition of the Church: "the Church is communion by grace between created and uncreated unconfusedly and inseparably".

This is why in Orthodox icons that depict the transfigured world of God, we do not only see persons, but also animals, mountains , rivers, stones, wood and all creations of God without exception . For the same reason , in Orthodox worship there is an inviolate position for all material goods of creation : bread, wine, water, oil, eggs, grapes, candle, incense, flowers and others.

Thus the Orthodox faithful , in presupposing such a broad ecclesiology that the Trinitarian dogma normatively defines, is not simply open to dialogue with every person of good-will but also feels as a "brother" with all elements of nature. Just as St. Francis of Assisi called the almond tree, the mind , his donkey, and even the very remote stars in the infinite galaxies of the firmament , his brothers. But even more stirring in his spiritual breadth is St Isaac the Syrian who knew how to be compassionate, to pray and even to shed tears "for the enemies of truth" and "lor the demons"!

(b) The Chrlstologlcal Dogma The significance of this dogma is also clear. Salvation

depends directly on the way the Church understands the

Person and the mission of Christ. The Lord who founded the Church is called Saviour, precisely because He is not simply a Teacher of good or a Prophet, as were those before Him. Christ is the consummation, the fulfilment and the end of all prophecy, the unique and final possibility of salvation . He is "perfect God", able to fully heal and deliver humanity. He is also "perfect man", in order to be the "first-born Son of all created things" (Col. 1 : 15). The two natures of the Lord , the divine and the human, united "un confusedly and inseparably" in the unique person of Christ constitute the most persuasive evidence that God truly loved man and the world. If man believes and accepts this unheard of union between divine and human in the person of Christ, then there is no death . All our corruption and mortality are transformed into immortality when we are embodied through repentance and the Mysteries of Christ into His all-holy Body that is the Church.

Yet this love of God should not be considered mechanicalor magical transfiguration . For salvation to be real , it must pass through all stages of human pain. This in any case is the reason that Christ, after His Resurrection, descended "to the uttermost chambers of Hades".

If it is blasphemous to believe that one may be saved alone, it is equally blasphemous for man to expect, passively and without any personal struggle, salvation from above. Neither, then, theoretical faith without works - because even demons have such faith - nor again works without the fear and reverence of God, for "no one is justified through works of law" (Rom. 3 : 20).

Whoever takes seriously the Incarnation of Christ and the two natures as they were united inseparably and unrepeatably in His theanthropic Person, cannot tolerate any undermining of or injustice to either of these two natures. Both must "synergise" for the effectual achievement of the event of salvation. Chanting and teaching that Christ "effected salvation in the midst of the world", the Church confesses that au r salvation is not a personal achievement of the individual faithful , but a personal participation in the

LIFE IN CHRIST

Looking at the life in the Monastery and the Church generally we see:

1. The monastery/church is the Body 01 Christ and Christ cares for it . as He does for His own Body.

2. Our daily programme of praying. chanting. reading . doing is praying the Word. chanting the Word. reading the Word. doing the Word and in this way the word takes on flesh (6 A6yQ(, o6p~ EyEVETO) so that these are both means to approaching close to God and actually a vision of God. rEpOVTO oiten repeats something of 81. Gregory of Nyssa that "the iourney towards Christ is the vision of Christ". Moreover. agood theologian does not just know the Word or speak the Word but does the Word and In this way the Word takes on flesh.

Praying . services. reading , lasting. 610K6vr)lJO elc. is the "life in Christ" that St. Paul and N. Cabasilas talk about. Christ also said He is the way. the light, the life and it is interesting to note that the subjects in the Holy Bible are nEplnOToOvTo, KOTOKEi~EVOV, aVOKEII..lE

' VOI<; etc.

To waste time is to turn your back on Christ and takeno notice of Him (spiritual suicide!) and how often do we do this and feel sapped of our strength in Christ. On the other hand, to sacrifice yourself for Christ is the source of energy in Christ.

3. Christ is love, mercy etc. and when we live the virtuous lifewe live Christ.

Monk J .

saving grace that Christ secured through His death "once for all" for the entire humanity.

Against the pharisaic display of the pietists and the pessimistic indifference of the faithless, Orthodoxy offers its doctrine on "synergy". The Apostle Paul calls the faithful "coworkers of God" (1 Cor. 3: 9). It is moving to see the many ways in which our simple yet deeply religious people was inspired to express its conviction concerning this "synergy" of divinity and humanity which, as we have said, constitutes the quintessence of the Christological and soteriological dogma.

We shall close this article by quoting the following characteristic example: to this day in many parts of Greece -and especially in N. Greece -the names Agorastos (bought) and Grammenos (written) survive. How many know the origin and meaning of these two curious names? How can one be

named "Agorastos" or "Grammenos"? The tireless mystic N.G. Pentzikis, who still preserves for us the noblest "recollections" from the age-old daily veneration of our people in the depths of the liturgical memory of Orthodoxy, recently gave me the appropriate explanation. When a couple could not give birth, he said, they prayed to Christ and the Virgin Mary to send them a child which they would not consider their own but Christ's and the Virgin Mary's. Thus, when after prayer and fasting the child was born, they placed it before the icons of the Church, and took it back home only after having paid a sum of money in order to remember forever that the child was "bought" and registered in the books of the Church, namely "written". Which other people was consumed by the fire of faith to this degree, so as to make such daily incarnated "negotiations" with Christ and the Virgin Mary? Only the humble Greek Orthodox people reached this divine madness in its religious life. This is because Orthodox theology is not rational idealism but "eating" and "drinking" from the table of life of the humble "who seek the Lord". This is an experiential appropriation and an affirmation of the "slain lamb" from the foundation of the world.

Moments

in the

Divine Liturgy

THE KISS OF PEACE Just before the Creed is recited, the fotlowing diatogue

takes place between the priest and the congregation (through the choir):

Priest: Choir: Priest:

Choir:

Peace be to all And to your spirit. Let us love one another, that with one mind we may confess: The Father, Son and Holy Sp irit, Trinity, One in essence and undivided.

During a concelebration of the Divine Liturgy, the main celebrant (or the Bishop) stands in front of the aitar (facing East), while the other priests line up on the North (left) and South (right) sides of the aitar, in o rder of age. While the Choir sings the Trinitarian Formula above, the priests and deacons all bow three time towards the altar, saying each time: "I will love thee, 0 Lord, my strength. The Lord is my lirm support, and my reluge, and my deliverer." (Psalm 17: 2-3, LXX). To indicate the source from which peace and love a re to be derived, the main celebra nt then kisses the discos. the chalice, and the edge of the altar; he then moves to the right side of the aitar. The other celebrants moving in a single file, in an antic lock wise direction about the altar, each repeat the actions of the main celebrant. The second celebrant exchanges the "Kiss of Peace" with the main celebrant and then stands on his right. The third celebrant exchanges the "Kiss of Peace" with the main celebrant and the second celebrant and son on, until the youngest priest has repeated these actions .

The "Kiss 01 Peace" is performea by the concelebrating priests in the following way. While holding each other's right hand, they first kiss each other on the left shou lder and then on the right. The more sen ior priest says: "Christ is in our midst", while the other priest replies: "He is and shall be" (or at Easter time, "Christ is risen" and "Truly He is risen").

The kiss is one of the most ancient practices and dates from Old Testament times. Christ reproached Simon the pharisee for not giving Him the customary kiss before the meal: "You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in, she has not ceased to kiss my leet" (Luke 7: 45). Originally, at the Divine Liturgy, the "Kiss of Peace" was exchanged not only amongst the bishops and priests, but also amongst the deacons and the people of the congregation. St Cy ril of Jerusalem (4th Century) wrote, '''Embrace one another, and let us salute each other. The kiss is a sign that our souls are united and that we banish all remembrance of injury". Thi s fits in with the Biblical admonition, "first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift at the altar". (Matthew 2: 24)

In earlier times, the kiss was more a sign of respect rather than as a sign of affection as it has often become . In those day, the kiss was offered on the lips for as St. John Chrysostomos says, "It is through these doors that Christ enters us ... whenever we receive communion ... " Men and women would also exchnge the kiss, but not with catechumens, for they did not yet belong to the "communion" of the Holy Spirit, the Church. Later, the kissing between men and B4

women was forbidden in the church - the men would kiss each other, and the women each other. Is this perhaps the reason for the physical separation of men and women in our churches? Sti ll later the exchanging of the kissamongst the lai ty ceased altogether.

In conclusion, we could mention that in some other traditions, the "Kiss 01 Peace " has been retained amongst the people of the congregation in modified form. Forexample, in the Armenian Church, the faithful bow to each other whi le they exchange their greeting, while the choir chants the beautiful words:

"Holy greeting hath been enjoined, The Church is made as one person, This kiss given as bond 01 lullness. "

BOOK REVIEW·

Treatise on Prayer: An Explanation of the Services Conducted in the Orthodox Church. By Symeon of Thessalonike. Translated by H.L.N. Simmons. Brookline, Mass.: Hellenic College Press, 1984. Available at the Archdiocesan Book Centre, 242 Cleveland Street, Redfern 2016. Price $15.00.

In recent years there has been much interest in the life and work of St Symeon 01 Thessalonike (d. 1429: Feast Day. September 15th) who was canonized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1981 . Prior to the appearance of this admirable edition of St Symeon's Treatise on Prayer by Dr Harry Simmons - who. as most readers will know, teaches at the University of New South Wales and St Andrew's Theological College - those seeking an English translation of any of St Symeon's religious writings would have had a fruitless search . The present edition is in fact a translation of a portion of a very long work, which as a whole constitutes, as the transla tor notes, "a kind of handbook for the clergy". Dr Simmons' edit ion of Symeon's "Treatise on Prayer" is bound to be eagerly seized upon by those who wish to know something of the thought and spirituality of so recent an addition to the Church Calendar. Certainly this work does reveal a good deal about its author, but it is important also for a quite different reason .

Symeon is concerned more with the daily public prayer 0 1 the Church than with private devotion . He lists the components of the daily offices together with some other observances (such as the prayers used at meals in the monasteries) noting many interesting details concerning the way the services were conducted in the early Fifteenth Century, and adding many comments on the symbolic interpretation of the liturgy. What makes this particular liturgical commentary so important, however, is that Symeon includes comment on the old Byzantine Cathedral Rite (also known as the Asmatlc Rite) as well as the monastic Jerusalem Aite. which was destined to replace the former universally. SI Symeon's Cathedral of Hagia Sophia at Thessalonike was the very last church to use the Cathedral Rite; with the exception of its use on three days of the year at Hagia Sapia in Constantinople.

St Symeon strove fervently to preserve the Asmatlc Rite at Thessalon ike : "/ beseech you in Christ that this order be maintained forever, and that the tradition of the Fathers remain among you as a kind of divine spark ". (pp. 21 - 2). But it was not to be. Six months after the death of the Saint, Thessalonike fell to the Turks and its Cathedral became a mosque. Then, in 1453. the unthinkabte happened : Constantinople itself fell , and its Great Church 01 Hagla Sophia 100 became a mosque. The daily round of Asmallc services

- basical ly (leaving aside the Liturgy) Vespers, Matins and Trlthekte (a sort of combinat ion of the Third and Sixth Hours) - was in many respects c learly better suited to cathedra l and parish church use than that o f the essentia lly monastic Jerusalem Aite.lts loss must be accounted amongst the tragedies of the history of Orthodoxy; rich and sp lendid though the Jerusalem monastic Aite be.

It is interesting to note that the decline of the Cathedral Aite seems to have been the result, not only of a growing dominance of the monastic over the secular c lergy , but also of a strong preference of the laity for the liturgical poetry to be found in the Jerusalem Rite over the solidly Scriptural Asmatic services. In a desperate bid to save the Cathedral Aite for posterity, Symeon tells us that he permitted the addi tion of a strictly limited number of verses from the Kanons to theAsmallcservice. Today there is a demand, particularly amongst our young people, for a greater emphasis on the Scriptures, The reintroduction, in modified form, of the old Cathedral Rite for non-monastic use would, for this and other reasons, have a great deal to commend it.

St Symeon's symbol ic interpretation of the church building and the services is of great in terest. Symbolic interpretation enriches, deepens and extends our understanding of the Scriptures, the services and so on - and indeed its existence is one of the great riches of Orthodoxy - but great vig ilance is needed where it is used to defend personal theological opinion orto justify ecclesiastical practices, An

example, noted by Dr Simmons, of what is really illegitimate use of symbolic interpretation, is Symeon'sdeployment of Trinitarian symbolism to justify the grouping of the dai ly monastic offices in to three blocks, The monastic offices are designed to sanctify, or redeem, the particular hours of the day, and they lose a great deal of their effectiveness and meaning if they are bunched together; indeed, it is surely difficult to see such bunching as anthing more than liturgica l abuse (even if it is "traditional" abuse!) .

Dr Simmons translation is clear and readable. However, the headings of the very short chapters, which are neither Symeon 's nor Simmons', are certai nly misleading in some instances. I was very puzzled on f irst skimming through the volume to read four lines into 'Chapter 22, The Trisagion Hym n': "". th is hymn .. , is called Great Doxology", The mystery was only resolved when going to the previous chapter I discovered that Symeon treated the Trlsaglon as part of the Great Doxology; so, in fact . Chapter 22 is continuous w ith Chapter 21. I noticed a few typographical errors. At least one line seems to be missing at the beginning of the second paragraph on p, 78. and one or more words from the second sentence of Chapter 63. Dr Simmons' introduction is brief - in fact, perhaps a little too brief given the omission by the publisher of the footnotes which. the translator tel ls me, should have been added to the text - but helpful and informative, I am much looking forward to reading the translation of further portions of St Symeon's religious writings which Dr Simmons is preparing for publication ,
