ONCOLOGY OUTLOOK2012
1) Critically evaluate evidence based literature on the risks, benefits, outcomes and survival for patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy vs. primary surgery for ovarian cancer2) Based on the data which demonstrates a survival advantage for optimal vs. suboptimal debulking, physicians will be able to incorporate this knowledge into their practice which will result in improved survival for ovarian cancer patients3) By understanding the clinical trials available, and also the benefits of patient participation in clinical trials, providers will be able to identify candidate patients who may benefit from participation in clinical trials4) Review the benefits of targeted therapy5) Understand the survival advantages of IP chemotherapy 6) Incorporate problem solving skills to increase the application of IP chemotherapy by overcoming problems with administration of the IP route7) Review and understand outcomes data and risk/benefit of robotic surgery to laparotomy8) Understand the options for therapy of ovarian cancer patients with platinum resistant disease, both new cytotoxic therapy as well as molecular therapies
9) Compare breast cancer screening recommendations from the USPSTF with other oncologic/surgical groups.10) Critically evaluate the risk stratification procedure for breast cancer patients to increase utilization of risk stratification in clinical community practice.11) Based on the cancer registry data, many patients with breast cancer undergo total mastectomy. By clearly identifying the criteria for breast conserving therapy, surgeons may be able to offer breast conserving therapy to more patients 12) There is evidence based data which supports new and innovative approaches for the use of radiation in breast cancer patients, the providers and oncologists need to understand these options in order to be a partner in the care of their patients with breast cancer. 13) Review the benefits of participation in clinical trials14) Identify current genetics profiling that is available15) Identify reasons why breast conservation rates in the lower US differ from other areas of the country16) Review appropriate screening techniques and diagnostic tests
