On Oct. 29, 2012 all hell broke loose at night. In Breezy Point and the Rockaways, most of our members’ houses got de- stroyed. For us, it had the same eerie feeling as 9/11,” said Sergiovanni at Tuesday night’s city commission meeting. Through efforts here in Deerfield, shoeboxes filled with supplies and $2,500 was sent to Breezy Point, NY. Commended were: local businessman Frank Congemi, former mayor Peggy Noland and former local Kiwanis Club President Avis Swenson. but seven quit because the game was too physi-cal for them.

“That was the identity that was there and wehad to put them in position to like the game, havefun and maximize talent,” McCloud said. “Thatwas the hard part of putting the pieces to-gether.”

McCloud said the biggest point he needed tomake with his team was drawing on his ownweakness. He said it was more than being afinalist for the Butkus Award in college orreaching the NFL.

“I didn’t talk about my strengths, I talked aboutmy weaknesses,” McCloud said. “I spoke of thethings I failed at, the things I could have donebetter at, as it relates to football. Ray Lewis and Iwere drinking one day as rookies, and Ray wassaying how we need to stop. He said he wantedto be a legend and he decided to separate to bebetter and not keep drinking, and I didn’t do it. Ispoke to them about the pain of my past in orderfor them to really draw into the passion of why weneed to play and the focus to move on.”

“It was very humbling to open up like that tothe kids, probably beyond humbling,” McCloudadded. “A lot of the things I shared with thoseguys, I never shared with anybody in my life. The only person that knew about that story wasme and Ray. I had to do some soul searching. Icouldn’t watch them get beat up and defeated. It was therapy for me too because I had to openthose scars up. I never even told my wife aboutit and we’ve been married for 16 years.”

McCloud was the defensive coordinator atCalvary Christian in the spring of 2012 and hasbeen involved as a youth football coach inprograms around Broward County. He said thecore five kids (Don Andrew Hanson, ChrisJudge, Rashad Witty, Ruben Monroe and Josh

Forde) who came out last spring were “hopingand believing” that there would be a team andthey stayed the course. The players recruitedfellow classmates and they were able to field ateam and defeated Palmer Trinity, 40-6, in thespring game.

“I think it says a lot.” McCloud said. “Wewanted to make it exciting for the school andbring some life to the program,” McCloud said.“They have sent a message to everyone thisyear. I believe that with the talent in NorthernBroward County that Zion can be an elite pro-gram in the future.”

“This is going to rank up there with the thingsI do,” McCloud said. “When I deal with thehome school kids, inmates and doing camps …You see the smiles on the faces of the kids. Yousee the kids at Zion where coaches walked outon the kids in the middle of the season. This willrank in my Top 2.”
