One paragraph 18 pitch
Hypothesis
Sentence- 18 pitch
Abstract
See guidelines for Abstract
Title of Experiment Titles should be creative and the letter size large
This is a report on the topic of the experiment.
Pitch size should be either 10 or 12. The layout of the
background report on the board is student preference.
Procedure
The procedure is a detailed step by step process of your experiment.
List steps vertically with numbers. Use 16-18 pitch
Data
Computer graphs. Include one paragraph of data analysis
Conclusion
One paragraph. Include recommendations 18 pitch
Background
DATA NOTEBOOKEither a spiral or stapled pages with a cover sheet of “Data Notebook” to display in front of the board. This contains all collected experimentation results.

PurposePurpose•Reason for research and experimentation!
•Make science come alive
•Get and give!

A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. ~Freeman Dyson
VariablesVariables• Independent- manipulated
during experiment•Dependent- results (report in
data analysis)•Control- validate experiment•Extraneous- whoops! Need
to mitigate; otherwise retest.
One person’s constant is another person’s variable.
~Alan Perlis
Fertilizer effect on Marigold Fertilizer effect on Marigold GrowthGrowthIndependent Variable 2% fertilizer mix 5% fertilizer mix 10% fertilizer mix
Dependent Variable Growth rate (cm)
Control Variable 0% fertilizer mix Potting containers Amount of H2O (mL) Sun exposure
Extraneous Variable Animal Age of seeds Health of soil
ResearchResearch•Discussion of topic, purpose and/or variables
•2-3 typed pages in MLA format
Research is creating new knowledge. ~Neil Armstrong
HypothesisHypothesis•Prediction based on research
•Numerically based!•Include variables
The only relevant test of the validity of a hypothesis is comparison of prediction with experience. ~Milton Friedman
Fertilizer effect on Marigold Fertilizer effect on Marigold GrowthGrowthMarigolds grown in the 10% fertilizer mix will have a 25% higher growth rate than marigolds grown in 2 or 5% fertilizer mix.
ProcedureProcedure•Detailed, step by step directions
•METRIC measurements not standard (U.S.A.)
You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change…the procedure, the process is its own reward. ~Amelia Earhart
Data CollectionData Collection•Data notebook in 2D
–Dated–Detailed
•Trials and trials!!!
In the spirit of science, there really is no such thing as a "failed experiment." Any test that yields valid data is a valid test. ~Adam Savage

Data AnalysisData Analysis•Discussion of variables and data collection
•Reference graphs and tables (computerized)
•Digital imagery
Get the habit of analysis - analysis will in time enable synthesis to become your habit of mind. ~Frank Lloyd Wright
ConclusionConclusion•Accuracy of hypothesis•Recommendations for change
•Impact
