ANGEL stands for African American Wom-en Nurturing and Giving Each Other Life. The network aims to reduce the number of deaths

within the African American female population by offering early detection programs, access to screening and empowering African American women on breast health practices so that they will take an active part in their own health care.

Walking and Biking GroupsThe Ward 1 community Health initiative (cHi) encour-

ages our neighbors to create walking groups and clubs throughout the community. The benefits of a walking program is that it :

• can assist residents with living a healthier lifestyle

• increases community vigilance and the visibility of groups that provide can

• neighborhoods with a safer environment

• can create a more connected community

a biking program will also be unveiled in may to coin-cide with the completion of Phase iii of Kerruish Park’s re-development , and the opening of a multipurpose fitness trail with fitness stations. councilman Pruitt, the Kerruish Park committee, Heal cleveland, and the Ward 1 cHi have worked hand in hand to create a beautiful recreational area which will make it possible for residents of all ages to increase their physical activity levels. The Health initia-

tive encourages residents to use all of our parks to bike, hike, walk and talk. anyone who is interested in forming a walking or biking group should let us know. We can provide you with tips , and resources to get you started.

safe Routes to schoolThe goal of the Safe routes to School (SrTS) program

is to maintain and improve walking conditions around Ward 1 schools. Through this effort , walking and biking to school will become safer and a more appealing trans-portation mode for students, while encouraging and sup-porting a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age. Parents, students, school administrators and concerned residents are all welcome to participate in this effort.

The Ward 1 cHi is currently working with adlai Steven-son and charles W. eliot elementary school administrators, parents and students to create School Safety and Travel Plans that will identify ways to support safer walks and bike rides to school. a School Safety and Travel Plan is a written document that outlines a school’s and commu-nity’s intentions to make walking and biking travel to and from school safer and sustainable. This is accomplished by reducing individual car trips, increasing walking and bicycling, and making our children’s walking and bicycling environment safer.

The cleveland metropolitan School district is preparing for “not on our Watch,” a weeklong summit on bullying that kicks off Friday, September 7.

The summit represents a district-wide approach to safety and belonging in an effort to promote a school climate that’s free of bullying behavior.

roughly 1,200 students in Grades 7-12 will learn to identify characteristics of bullying as described in the district’s Student code of conduct and in ohio law.

Students will develop empathy for victims of bullying, understand terms like “perpetrator,” “victim” and “bystander,” learn strategies that will decrease bullying behavior in order to develop prevention programs in each of the cmSd buildings.

also, the summit will allow the district to explore in-depth a problem that affects more than 13 million students in the united States, including boys and girls who attend cleveland’s public schools.

For questions or for more information about “not on our Watch,” please email [email protected].
