The Good News of the Gospel

Perpetual Novena in honor of

Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

Weekly Eucharistic Adoration

9:00 AM – 9:00 PM with special exceptions

Thank you for the previous response which filled the 3:00PM and 5:00PM hours of adoration with two committed adorers for each hour! It has come to my attention that we are now in need of two committed adorers for the 8:00PM hour….what a blessing it is to see many adorers at that hour, but again, to fulfill the diocesan regulations we need commitment to assure us that Jesus will never be left alone in Eucharistic Adoration…..contact Bonnie Laurino at 910-508-8820 for any questions.

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands. —For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews, do not eat without carefully washing their hands, keeping the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without purifying themselves. And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed, the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds. —So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?” He responded, “Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.” He summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. “From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile.”

Mk 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Join us for the Perpetual Novena in honor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal every Tuesday after the 8:30 am Mass. Bring all of your intentions to Mary.

Special Farewell

This Sunday, after the 11:30am Mass we will have a reception for long-time parishioner, Carl Rilling. Carl has been a member of St. Mark since 1988. He and his wife, Betty (deceased), were instrumental in beginning our Charismatic Prayer group. Carl has served on numerous committees, most recently our Columbarium Committee. He was a longtime, faithful Sacristan. He was also active with Children’s Faith Formation during many years of VBS. Carl is moving to South Carolina to be closer to one of his daughters, and although we will miss him here at St. Mark, we want to wish him well in his new home. We ask all who know and remember Carl to stop by and say farewell on his last regular Sunday with us before his move. May God bless you abundantly Carl. We thank Him for your presence here in our St. Mark Community. You will always be a part of our St. Mark family whether near or far away.

Spirit of the Liturgy Alex Hill, Director of Music and Liturgy (910) 398-6514 / [email protected]

How can I participate in the music ministry? Despite rumors to the contrary, most Catholics enjoy a vibrant worship tradition with enthusiastic singing. In fact, virtually all of Western music, sacred and secular, has its origin in the Catholic Church…but that’s a topic for another column. Every person attending Mass is called to “full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations…” (Vatican II, “Sacrosanctum Concilium,” #14). What does that mean? When called to listen to the Scriptures or liturgical prayers proclaimed, we listen “fully, consciously, and actively.” When called to recite, respond, or pray aloud, we do the same. What about when called to sing? And what if I have a horrible voice, or if I “can’t carry a tune in a paper bag?” Obviously there are music ministers who need trained voices like cantors and psalmists, with good pitch and projection. Other music ministers like choir members need good voices that blend well and a little music reading ability. Organists and instrumentalists need skills specific to their instrument, and conductors must have a wide range of many skills. But the average parishioner in the pews, yes even those who are sure they have “horrible” voices, are called to lift those voices in song to the best of their ability. In the Catechism (#1156) St. Augustine is quoted as saying “He who sings, prays twice.” This suggests that, by raising our voices in sung worship (without regard to quality, good training, being in tune, etc.), we raise our hearts and minds more completely to God. Late summer and fall is when our choirs come back together after a summer hiatus. This is the perfect time to commit to a more “full, conscious, and active participation” in the music liturgy: by singing what is proper to the congregation (hymns, psalm responses, Mass parts, etc.); by joining one of our excellent choirs; or by volunteering to serve as a cantor or instrumentalist. God has given us hearts and voices for song, and being a loving Father, he accepts our offerings at Mass without conditions. If you’ve been holding back from singing for fear of human judgment, it may be time to remember the Source of all music, and to “give to God what is God’s”: your voice raised in song at every liturgy!

There are two volleyball teams and they play in the Activity Center. The volleyball program at St. Mark has won the middle school championship the past two years. The soccer team has a strong group of 8th graders returning, cross country has been strong every year, and a new coach is bringing excitement to girl’s tennis. Come out and support all our teams. FAMILY CORNER

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Word: In your name, Spirit of God, I call forth the goodness in others.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that the real evils of our daily lives – such as greed and deceit – come from within a person’s heart. The Gospel points us towards our starting point; to recognize the goodness, the very image of God, in everyone we meet in our lives, at work or play. Our goal is to call forth that goodness in all and to celebrate! The whole community and the world will benefit.

Living the Word During the General Intercessions at Mass today, pray for yourself, your children, and all you will encounter in the

upcoming week.

A Message from our Bishop—August 30, 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In our Second Reading today we hear the exhortation of Saint James: “Be doers of the word and not hearers only.” From the earliest days of the Church, each person in whom the Good News has been planted has also been encouraged to share the message that Jesus proclaimed with his teachings and his very life.

Indeed, we are all called to be evangelizers. This is not the role of any one group of Catholics. In fact, in an address this June to bishops visiting the Vatican for their ad limina meetings, Pope Francis reminded them that “the involvement of the laity is also indispensable for the evangelizing mission.”

As we mark our seventh annual Diocesan celebration of Lay Ministry Sunday, I commend each of you for the many ways you serve as doers of the word, sharing with your neighbors the gifts you have been given. In particular, I convey my gratitude to our dedicated lay ministers, whether you serve as leaders in any parish ministry, as liturgical or catechetical ministers, in outreach to the neediest among us, or in countless other ways. I offer profound thanks to you on behalf of your pastors, pastoral administrators, and all those you serve.

May our Blessed Mother, who gave birth to the Word among us, support all your efforts to share the message of her son, and may Our Lord continue to bless you, those you love and all those you serve.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Raleigh
